Hi everyone
Wondered if anyone could help with locating an ancestor Betty Fletcher born circa 1778 at Mellor nr Blackburn

Betty is living with her daughter Jane Starkie nee Fletcher and William Starkie at 16Ainsworth St Blackburn on 1851. On the front of the census details it says Mellor - and on the film it says Melton???

Marriage: 9 Mar 1801 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
William Fletcher - (X), slaiter of the parish of Blackburn
Elizabeth Core - (X), spinster of the same parish
    Register: Marriages 1797 - 1801, Page 240, Entry 913
    Source: Film 1278807
Although this says Blackburn, I believe these are two Mellor people.   Coar is an old family farming name at Mellor nr Blackburn where I was born although these are my paternal relatives and it is through my maternal side that I was born in the little village of Mellor.   The Fletchers seem to  have moved to Blackburn and many of them where flaggers and slater.

I have searched and searched but cant find Betty on the 1841.  I believe her husband William could have died in 1830

Any help on the 1841 would be appreciated.

Thanks  bashfuljampot

Silly question Bashfull, but have you tried searching using Betsy and Elizabeth?
I have an ancestor named variously as Betty, Betsy and Elizabeth on the marriage and death certificates of her children.

Leonie.

Hi Loneybones.   Thats no a bad idea.  I think I have tried Elizabeth but not Betsy.     Found one of my husband's" William's" by putting "wilm "in.
I think the people who took the census's put whatever they felt like!!!

Thanks again bashful

It also depends on who gave the answers.   :D   Her name could have been Betty but her husband may have called her Betsy.

Good luck,
 :D
