I have the family of Robert Hilton in census 1851 residing in Lancing Sussex, and then they disappear.
Robert Hilton 33 Coastguard b. Litlington Sussex
harriet 30 b. Yarmouth Norfolk
Richard 6 b, Littlehampton
susannah 5 b Littlehampton
William 3 b.Selsey
Joseph 2 b.Lancing
Susannah was in Adelaide, South Australia in 1867, married to George Kidd. There they had a daughter May Kidd in 1867, but I don't know if they married in Aussie or England, no record Freebdm.
I am wondering if the rest of her family went with her?
Susannah and George ended up in New Zealand, having a son Allan Kidd in 1874. 1876 dau daisy and 1878 a son Julian
Hoping someone might be researching them, and have a link.

Hi
It is normally possible to track a Coastguards movements using the Establishment Books in ADM 175; these are available as free downloads from the National Archives website, but be warned they are extremely large files.
I did look at ADM 175/7 (page 252 of 792), and from this it would appear that Robert left the Coastguard Service on 18 January 1854 to enter the Merchant Navy. This does not answer your question, but might help you to identify where to look now!
Out of interest I also looked at his prior service, and it appears he joined the CG Service from the Revenue Cruiser Camelion on 30 October 1846, with a first posting to Selsea Bill. It was from here that he moved to Lancing on 2 May 1849. I'm afraid to find out about his service in Camelion you would have to consult her Muster Book at the NA, kew.
Hope this is of some help.

Hi There
Is there another daughter to Robert & Harriet Hilton name of Hannah Hilton b.1852 Worthing Sussex England?
Hannah Hilton married in Aldinga South Australia 1872 and her father is listed as Robert Hilton.
Look forward to hearing from you.

hi rnzaf,
I can't say for sure if Hannah is the daughter of the same Robert Hilton, cant find a baptism for her, and as the Hiltons left England in 1854 for Australia I cant check the 1861 census for her either.
Found this researcher who seems to think they are one and the samehttp://nicko.familytreeguide.com/getperson.php?personID=I17311&tree=T1&PHPSESSID=294c6bb063588423d13b0d5039702ffb, so maybe.
Would like to know where the name Woodrow comes from, sounds like a family name but have yet to find any connection to it...yet.
At this stage it seems Robert, baptised 12 oct 1817 Litlington,Sussex. Was the son of Richard Hilton and Barbara Wenham = 5 Dec 1803 Seaford, Sussex.
If these are his parents Richard Hilton must have died between 1817 and 1823 when barbara remarried to a George French 28 Dec 1823 Litlington
hope this helps. personal mail me if you want more details
All the best

Hi Lynne, I have ordered the birth certificate for Hannah Hilton which should arrive early October and shed some light on her parents. I will be in touch when I have some news. After her husband (William Garven Appleton) died 1874, Hannah had 2 more children whom both took the Appleton name and both came to New Zealand. It's a bit of a mystery that one!
John.

Hi Lynne,
Birth Certificate arrived yesterday and it would appear that Hannah Hilton is the daughter of Robert Hilton and Harriet Elizabeth Fenn. Robert's occupation is listed as Coast Guard. The family resided at Lancing. I have copies of Hannah's two marriage certificates, also her 88 year old granddaughter is still alive.
Regards, John.

Robert and Harriet's marriage is on freebmd in 1842 so getting that certificate should help.

Hi John,
I am sorry but we have been unable to pass on your recent message to Lynne as it looks like she has changed email address and we do not have a new one for her.
I have searched for her on the web with the very little information we have but I have been unable to find her.
Regards
Sarah

I am really interested in all these Hiltons.
I have a Hannah Hilton who was born approx 1816 in Brighton, Sussex - obviously not the same Hannah as the one born in 1852, however, she lived in Aldinga in South Australia where the younger Hannah went. Aldinga is also called "White's Valley" or "White's Gully" after Hannah's husband - Samuel White. Samuel White was very successful at setting up farms and a milling business there and even expanded into shipping.
I was really wondering if the reason why the other Hannah wound up in Aldinga was because she had relatives there who just about built the place. Hannah came to Australia with her sister Barbara and her sister's three children. However, there was also a William Hilton on the same ship and that has been suggested may have been another relative. He came from Litlington, Sussex just like Robert! These people are looking suspiciously related. Samuel and Hannah also moved to New Zealand in 1868. So Susannah and George Kidd are following six years later. It would be interesting if they went to Wanganui. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/White-63167

I have looked into it further. Yes, Robert is Barbara and Hannah (snr)'s brother. They are all the children of Richard Hilton and Barbara Wenham (Born 1778 in Hellingly, Sussex, England) married 4 Dec 1803 in Seaford, Sussex, England. Barbara Hutton nee Hilton was born in Seaford in 1804 while Hannah was born in Litlington, Sussex (not Brighton). Hannah jnr is Hannah snr's niece. I am descended from Barbara Hutton nee Hilton through her son David John Hutton.
