Title: Looking for marriage Woodcock/Trumper Birmingham c 1847
Post by: eltelf on Friday 30 July 10 16:45 BST (UK)
Can anyone help by coming up with a marriage record for Richard Woodcock (b c1820 in Birmingham) and Rhoda Trumper (b c1825 in Shropshire, possibly Bridgenorth, possibly Eccleston)?

The first records I have of Rhoda and Richard are 1841 census when they are both (separately) living in St Pauls district Birmingham: Richard Woodcock in Summer Row, St Pauls district, Birmingham with brother Samuel and sister Alice.  Rhoda Trumper a domestic servant in a house in Colemore (?) Road.

In 1851 Richard and Rhoda Woodcock were(apparently) married and living in Birmingham Ladywood (Sherbourne Street, Christ Church district) with a 3 year old child, so possibly married around 1847. they went on to have several children, and moved north to live in Cheshire. Rhoda's maiden name is given as 'Trumper' on children's birth certificates.

The only marriage record I can find for Rhoda Trumper on BMD records is to Joseph Stevens in 1847 in Hales Owen, Worcester.  (Definitely not my Rhoda as far as i can check).

I suppose it is possible they never actually married, but I think unlikely; Richard was a tailor, and they seem to have been fairly 'respectable' family (no riff raff here!).  I think Richard's sister Alice was married in St Phillips in Birmingham in 1853.

Very grateful if anyone can come up with suggestions.

Best wishes,

Lesley

I had a look on FreeBMD and there is nothing for Woodcock/Trumper between March quarter 1845 to December quarter 1848 anywhere in England and Wales.  Sorry  :'(

BumbleB

I have extended search to December quarter 1851 - still the same result  :'(

Sorry, 3 year old child in 1851 was a son not daughter - and he was born Woodcock (Edwin Samuel Woodcock) in June quarter 1848 according to BMD.  Daughter Sarah was born Sept quarter 1850.  (I don't have birth certs for these two).

According to the 1851 entry - Rhoda was b 1824 Acklington Northumberland

Where did you get her maiden name of Trumper from?  I think you need to buy a copy of one of the childrens birth certs

You just beat me to it - I can't find them in 1861 but found them in Cheshire in 1871 - birthplace Bridgenorth Shropshire

I was confused by the 'Acklington Northumberland' census record, but it is an anomaly - I think error by the census enumerator.  Rhoda is a little vague about her birth place on census, in 1871 says Bridgnorth (Bridge Worth) Shropshire, in 1881 Eccleston Shropshire, and in 1891 Birmingham.  I found a place near Bridgnorth that looked a bit like 'Acklington' so presume that she is from that area.

Thanks very much for this Tati (had not found it myself) - looks very like my Rhoda.  Worfield in Bridgenorth area, so would fit.  Also daughter of Richard and Rhoda was named Sarah.

And her parents too, looks like!

And thanks everyone else who is looking - it is wonderful to have so much help.

BWs,

Lesley

I can't find them in 1861 census at all - but son Richard Henry was born 16 April 1859 at 34 Grosvenor Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead, Cheshire (the family living at 3 Grosvenor St in 1871).  I have his birth cert - gives mother as Rhoda Woodcock, formerly Trumper.

Looks like Ackleton is actually in Worfield.

I'm looking at the family I suspect to be Sarah's parents in 1841 in Worfield, and the address is Ackleton
HO107/908 13 10 13

The 12 year old could possibly even be a son of Sarah (Thomas Spencer Trumper, mother Sarah, 6 Jun 1830 St Mary Magdalenes Bridgnorth). No sign of Sarah though.
