Title: 1851 Yorkshire Lookup request please
Post by: tarajobrien on Monday 24 May 04 11:11 BST (UK)
Hi

i'm afraid i don't have much information to go on but i'm looking for:

Benjamin Brooks age about 26, born Hull, occupation Labourer (on 1852 certificate)
Elizabeth Graves born Hull.
and maybe a daughter Maria Louisa Brooks age 3 born London.

Also
Thomas Brooks, age approximately 50ish and occupation on 1852 certificate is a horsebreaker and wife is Hannah. Thomas may have been born in 1801 in Rawcliffe Yorkshire - not confirmed a real maybe and may be living in Armthorpe - another not confirmed). son Benjamin age about 26 but may not be living there.

Also
Daniel Graves, age approximately 50ish and occupation on 1852 certificate is a tailor. Daughter Elizabeth but may not be living there. Also a daughter Emma L Graves but may not be living there.

I'd say Benjamin and Elizabeth(Eliza) were living together in 1851 or maybe with either of the families as they had a daughter in 1848, but had not married.
They married in Hull so best bet they are there, else probably in Doncaster.

good luck
thank you very much
Tara

Hi Wings 99

thanks heaps for the offer it would be wonderful.

a look up on:
Benjamin (Eugene Beautomis Napolean) Brooks age about 28 (just found him born in 1823)
Born Holy Trinity in Hull
occupation Labourer (on 1852 certificate)
He had a a daughter Maria Louisa Brooks age 3 born London
with a lady called
Elizabeth Graves born Hull in about 1824/25.
They did not marry until 1852 in Hull. But were in Doncaster at the end of 1852 and definitely still there in 1862. Maybe a search on 1861 would almost yield their presence over a chance on the 1851, but 1851 is of course still very much appreciated. :) :)

thank you very much Wings 99
Tara

Hi, I think I’m related to your Brooks from Hull. You mentioned they came from France, just wondered what you know about this? Many thanks!

Hi Alison,

There was always the rumour in my family that they were from France and fled during the french revolution. Apparently quite wealthy with a Chateau and lots of paintings etc... When they fled they cut the paintings out of their frames and that was all they could bring to England. The french surname was something like De Burgh (spelling unknown). This info was all written down by a long ago deceased descendant.
A few of Thomas and Hannah's children have very french names as well.

I have a newspaper advertisement advertising their business B Brooks and Sons which states their connection to Paris, but i can't attached anything to this thread for some reason.... i will try PM it to you.

Some of the above info is old/incorrect after more research. Benjamin and Eliza married in 1843 in Lincolnshire where her family was originally from.

Hi, very interesting thanks! I can’t seem to use chat on here.....
Ps - found that Benjamin Eugène Napoléon Brooks middle name was Beauharnais, not Beautamois. Wonder if that name is significant? Eugène Beauharnais was Napoléon’s adopted son, through Joséphine. Go figure! Alison
