Hi!
I hope that someone can help me. I have traced my Fisher ancestors to London, but as that is a terribly common last name, I've hit quite a dead end.
This is what I have so far:
Edward Fisher b. 1870, likely in Bromley, emigrated to Canada in late 1800's
parents: William Fisher b. abt 1829, likely in Shoreditch/Bethnal Green/that general area, likely died before 1876....Mary Ann Shepherd, b. abt 1830 in Suffolk. They married 22 Aug 1852 in Bethnal Green. His father is likely Edward Fisher; hers is likely William Shepherd.
I've found them on the 1871 census; however, cannot find them on the 1861 or earlier.
If that looks familiar to anyone, I would greatly appreciate an email at *or a reply on here. I've struggled with this one for months...years?!?!....and am not quite sure how to break through this.
Thanks in advance!
Best luck in your searches,
Jeni

There's a suspiciously similar family in 1861, but called MILLER. Hmmm...
I shall post them in case they become relevant.

Hi AVM,
Thank you for replying!
The 1871 census is the starting point. Likewise, I have a copy of the marriage registration for William Fisher and Mary Ann Shepherd (Sheppard).
Essentially, what I know is that Edward Fisher came to Canada as a home child with Barnardo's as did his brother George. From Edward's Canadian marriage and death records I know his parents are William Fisher and Mary Ann Shepherd (so the 1871 census and the marriage regs is for the right family). Barnardo's has also confirmed for me the parents and siblings names (and supplied photos of Edward and George and children, which has been priceless). According to Barnardo's, William died before the children were handed over in or around 1876.
I can trace Mary Ann through to 1911 on census records.
But, anything before 1871 is a mystery. I've found a couple of "could bes" in 1851 censuses but they are purely guesses and I don't have nearly enough to go on to use them to confirm anything.
Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciate more than I can say.
Cheers,
Jeni

Hi Again, AVM,
That really is quite an odd coincidence....but Miller and Fisher are not similar names...that would have to be a real leap in transcription.
Very interesting though....it's too similar to disregard it!

-
My goodness, you're quick at that!
I really appreciate this.
I've got other branches of my tree that I've been able to trace back several generations, it's these darn fishers that have been proving more difficult.
-
...and for William:
Baptism, St Bartholomew, Bethnal Green
27 March 1862
William FISHER
son of William FISHER, dock labourer, and Mary Anne. Address: 19 Barnsley St.
-
I can trace Mary Ann through to 1911 on census records.
In 1881 is she the Mary A. FISHER in Bromley St Leonard (20-yr-old William with her)?: RG11/498/107/5. If so she says she was born in Ipswich, which at least is helpfully less vague than in 1871 ("Suffolk") :D.
Does she ever give any other indication of where in Suffolk she was from?
-
1891 she is just listed as from Suffolk...though interestingly, in the house she has apparently taken in a 7 month old Nurse Child.
Her son Edward is back with her then, and they are in Bromley St Leonard, 22 Perring Street, Schedule 53.
After that, I don't have copies of the census records, just notes from.

hi :)
Are we happy that the name is "Fisher" or could it be "Flisher". on my tree I have a william Flisher who gave his dur: jane away in 1837. ???
all the best.
-
Hi,
I've not seen in my tree any variations on the name Fisher--however, that doesn't mean that there haven't been any. (The other name I'm searching is Jeakes which is also Jacks, Jakes, Jacques, Jukes, etc so I'm well acquainted with changing names!)
I can't find any reference of my William having a daughter Jane, plus he was born around 1829 so too young to have given a child away in 1837. So it's unlikely to be the same one.
best of luck trying to find out more!

Hi Hilda Karen From Reading here
I agree with every thing, one query I have started looking at nanny Bows line your aunt -- which brother or line did she appear from I know she was orphaned by 8 and in a children's home but as she was a first cousin to grandad (uncle jack) she was a bowbrick , so she must have been the daughter of a brother of Henry? K
-
Hi Karen, Aunt Nell's mother was Mary Bowbrick who was born in Portsmouth in 1872-1897. Father of Nell is unknown that is why she kept the Bowbrick name i guess.
Mary's father was Henry John Bowbrick who was born in 1838, he was the one who was on the Warrior and the Victory, he was in the navy for 30yrs. My brother George has all the original papers of all the ships he was on, don't know if you knew this. My Dad's and Uncle Jack's father was also Henry John born 1866, he was Mary's older brother.I have notes on all their siblings also their father's siblings so if you need anymore let me know. I have now got stuck on my great-great great grandfather, i know he was Thomas Bowbrick and he was a baker by trade and possible married a Sarah ? born about 1788 but can't get any further.Great hearing from you anyway, hope everyone is well up there, Love Hilda

Hi Karen, here is what i have.
Alice Atkins 1866-1913, married Ferdinand Phillips 1857=1889, they had a son William 1889=1890, she then married Henry John on 3/1/1894, their first chid was Henry b 1895, died 1896, John (Jack) b 1897=1985, Alice c 1900, who i believe died in the first year, then George 1903-1991. I have never heard of another brother, my Dad only ever spoke of Alice. Did you know your Dad had a older brother, George b 1921-1931?

Hi Hilda,
Sorry I have not been in touch for a while, work is very busy at the moment.
The good news is that Becky, my daughter, got into Portsmouth University and is enjoying it.
We will probably go down again in Jan/Feb time so nearer the time I will e-mail and organise to meet up with you again for a coffee.
Snowed in at the moment so am working from home, took five minutes out to look to see if anyone had got any further on the family history.
Went to see Asylum Road, where Thomas and Sarah lived, it is only ten minutes from where I work, unfortunately the house is not there any more, it has a 'Toys R Us' carpark over the top of it..great..!!
Hope all is well with your family, see you soon for a catch up.
Regards

Hi Andy,
Sorry i have been meaning to drop you a line too.
I had a very interesting 4 week course at the library, where we were shown the site for Ancestry , i didn't get anything on my Bowbrick line but i found a few interesting things on my Mcpherson line which is my Mum's direct line.
So i am hoping by going to the library to do some research i may have a bit more success on our Bowbrick line. Also they actually do a course on how to use the Ancestry website, it's only a 2 week course but i think it must be worth doing.
It will be great to see you both again , you know you are both welcome to come to my hopuse for a drink and even a piece of homemade cake if you want, but obviosly whatever is easier for you.
I'm glad your daughter got into uni o.k. i hope she is liking it down here.
speak to you soon .
all the best Hilda.
