We are searching for information post 1919 of Mary (May) Christie Shearer born 1894 in Ayrshire Scotland. She emigrated to Canada circa 1915 and married Donald McLeod in 1919 in Vancouver BC. We have pictures of her with her daughter around 1923/24 and a note that she passed away in 1951 in Winnipeg. Donald McLeod was born in Stornoway Scotland and joined the Canadian Forces in 1914 in Winnipeg. There are notations in family papers that they lived in Winnipeg but searching available records has turned nothing further. Is anyone able to point us in the right direction. Mary's granddaughter lives in England and she would really appreciate the assistance as to what became of her grandmother in Canada.
Thanks, Karen

Only deaths more than 70 years ago are indexed online, but you could still apply for a copy of her death certificate:

Some burials in Winnipeg are listed here: http://www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/cemeteries.stm
Do you know when/where Donald was born and when/where he passed away?

We haven't been able to find out when Donald died or where. He was born 1892 in Stornoway Scotland and emigrated to Winnipeg circa 1910 but we have searched the census and cannot find him, we only have his attestation papers, his next of kin being his mother in Scotland and he is unmarried. Mary had a sister who stayed in Vancouver and her granddaughter has the little notes and pictures but there is nothing else to confirm that Mary died in Winnipeg or even in 1951.

Hi Karen
On Ancestry, I can find a May Shearer emigrating to Canada on the Grampian, departing Glasgow and arriving in Quebec, Quebec on June 2, 1913. She was 18 yrs old, a domestic, and was destined for Vancouver, BC.

I further found the BC Marriage Index which shows that May Shearer married Donald McLeod in Vancouver, BC on September 24, 1919.
I can do a look up of this registration on Saturday when I'm at the Family History Society library if you like.
I forgot to mention that if you don't have access to Ancestry you can get to the passenger lists via the following site.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
There is a public tree on Ancestry which shows Mary Christie Shearer. The tree owner appears to be in British Columbia.
Unfortunately, none of this is giving you any information about their time in Manitoba.
Cheers,
Susan

Thanks Susan for your suggestions. The ancestry tree is my cousin in Vancouver whose grandmother was the sister of our elusive Mary (May). We are searching for post 1919 information, Mary did keep in close contact with her Vancouver family but none of those letters survived just some notations and pictures.

I was at the library today and was limited for time, but tried all kinds of variations to try and pinpoint something for the Mcleods deaths, including looking only in August 1951 for the surname alone...and came up empty. This is a common surname, and of course, DONALD used a lot ... even May seemed to come up as often as Mary. I even tried places of birth as that sometimes keywords the obits that use them... probably there but I couldn't find them in Wpg.
am adding the extra info from marriage in 1919 to help for others searching...
Donald Mcleod 1884 Stornoway, Scotland...parents Peter Mcleod & Kate Macaulay
May Shearer 1894 Glasgow...parents David Shearer & Jeanie Christie

Thank you J.J. for taking the time. I am thinking that perhaps Mary re-married. I found a cemetary listing for a Donald MacLeod with correct age in 1924 in Winnipeg so perhaps will continue along that line.

Ah, would have seen that as I looked at the thread while at the library....but there was no date posted on here... Will leave you to it then.

welcome to rootschat MCherney , are those not a lot earlier McLouds than the ones for whom we are looking?
KarieK, no new news on the family, but did you also see the sister's marriage
Marriage Nov 3, 1911 ,Vancouver, BC
Charles Campbell Leith Scott age 23
to Jeannie Sim Shearer age 24 1887 Paisley, Scotland
parents David Shearer & Jeannie Christie
Their children are listed here...that they have names of the living, but we do not post any names of the living on this site. http://www.loadsofpeople.co.uk/f_734.htm#8 You could contact the poster to see if they have a family contact. Her death in 1974 may have mentioned Mary in the obit...or they may know more about her...
A reread sees that you have contact with B.C. realatives, so you likely knew all that... :P

Hi J.J.
Yes, my contact in Vancouver is a direct descendant of Jeanie Sim Shearer. As you pointed out to MCherney our Donald MacLeod was born in Stornoway and Mary Shearer born also in Scotland so we are going forward from their marriage in 1919. Some new info has been uncovered, namely that a notation is on the marriage record that this couple was divorced in 1932 so we are trying to find a remarriage of either party. As to the daughters name of this couple we have no idea what it is.
