Title: Bridport War Memorial
Post by: MortenofPoole on Tuesday 27 July 10 13:39 BST (UK)
Hello. I'm trying to help someone find out about a Great War Casualty - ROBERT ALBERT POWELL. There is a possibility that his name might be inscribed on the Bridport War Memorial. I would be grateful if someone in East Dorset could check it for me. Many thanks. Morten

Hi,

If it was in East Dorset I could check but the only Bridport that I know is in West Dorset.     :-\

Have you looked for him on the CWGC site?

Hello Jan. "OH, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet."  Yes, I meant Bridport in West Dorset (glad that you were paying attention).  :) I have found him on the CWGC site but he was born in Bridport and I wondered if his name is on the memorial there.

I'm expecting to be in Bridport in late September so if no one has answered by then, I'll check for you.

Hi Morten

See that you are interested in War Memorials in the area.  Have you the one from Winterborne Kingston?
We visited the village some years ago as my father in law was born there. His younger brother's name is on the memorial so can give you his family details if you like.

Regards
Lee

Hi Morten

Trevor Christopher BALLAM - Corporal in King's Royal Rifle Corps. R/16360.
Killed 16/8/1917 aged 28 - remembered on TYNE COT MEMORIAL

He was born in Winterborne Kingston on 12/2/1889 - son of Edwin & (late) Alice Maria Ballam.
Brother of Alexander Edwin, Mary Elizabeth and (late) Alfred Charles.
Half Brother to John and George Smith.

As well as the stone memorial there is a wooden plaque inside the church.

To the best of my knowledge, no descendants of Edwin live in the village now.

Good luck with your project.

Regards
Lee
