Just read the topic on Tynemouth general cemetary by Irish Geordie; this reminded me that about 20+ years ago whilst walking near St Marys island, Whitley Bay I noticed several stones lying on the shore near the sea wall & I recall some were written on. I wondered then where did they had come from, were they damaged wares from stone masons or had they been taken from a cemetary to use as sea defences; are they still there?

St Mary's Island was used as a graveyard for burying washed up bodies, and it was also used as a quarantine hospital. Were the gravestones on the island side of the causeway? It is known locally as a 'Holy Island'

Years ago here in the north east people did carve their names on stone I'm sure my husband has his name on a stone near the beach just something young lads did ,just like on a tree
