Hi everybody,
I'm looking for a photo of and information about Stansted HOUSE in either Stansted or Bishops Stortford where William Fuller Maitland, Esq and his family lived in the 1850s and 1860s before he rebuilt Stansted HALL which is now part of Arthur Findlay College.
There's a lot of information about Stansted Hall, but I'm more interested in where he lived before. I can find Stansted House in Bishops Stortford reg district in lots of census records, but can't find it on any current maps. I think it might have been on Elsenham Road.
Can anyone help me find it?
thanks

I expect it disappeared under the airport then.

Thanks for the replies!
The Stansted House pictured on wikipedia is unfortunately the one located in West Sussex. I've found lots of info about the Maitland family but my interest is in his house as I have an ancestor who worked as a housemaid there in the 1850s and 1860s :)
She had left the Maitland's employ before Stansted Hall was completed. It's frustrating that no pictures of Stansted House seem to exist, even if it was demolished to make room for the airport >:(
thanks again for the posts

I've discovered a little bit more about the house.....
Sir Thomas Jackson, a banker, purchased Stansted House and its hundred acre estate sometime before 1902, when he moved there in his retirement. At that point, Stansted House became the seat of the Jackson Baronecy. He died in 1915.
Maybe the name of the house has changed??
Thanks :)

Hi Claire,
If you have not looked already the Essex Seax site is worth a look. They do
have a picture of Stansted House (1789).

Hope this helps.

Thank you Frances, I hadn't been to that site. I looked at the picture and it looks oddly similar to the photo of Stansted House in West Sussex... :( Could the Essex property have been built as a copy to the one in Sussex I wonder?
THere is another record with photos of the Essex Stansted House but the pics aren't online and I'm in America.......so .... I will keep hunting and hoping something turns up
thanks for the help!

Hi I'm researching the Fuller Maitland family at the moment and compiling a local history book on the family and their collections. I live in Stansted and have given a number of local talks on the family and their history.
I have some photos that were were taken around the time that Stansted house was sold in the mid 1920's. The house was damaged by fire some years later and another house was rebuilt on the site.
A picture of the house is in Paul Embletons book 'Around Stansted Mountfitchet' in the Images of England series.
William Fuller Maitland lived in the house from around the mid 1840's till he eventually decided to rebuild Stansted Hall in the early 1870's. Sadly he died just before he was about to move into the new Hall. His son also a William let the Hall out to Lord Gardner. In 1881 William married Lord Gardners daughter Evelyn and they moved back into the new Hall some years later much to the delight it seems of the village.

Thanks for the information on the house! I will try to find a copy of Embleton's book.
Cheers,
Claire :)

Hi Clare,
Yes I have a postcard in my collection which is the same as that in Paul Embletons book. The picture isn't great but I'd be happy to send you an image.
The other pictures I have are from the Hertford County Archive from a sales catalogue with their code B63.
I have just joined this forum to reply to your message so I'm just getting used to the format etc!
I'll get an image and sent to you when I can. In the meantime anything else please just ask.
Regards Roger

Stanste House is situated on the ground of Stansted Airport via the old Terminal Entrance and is use as offices.
102 Stansted House/Third Av, CM24 1AE, Stansted (Essex) I know exactly where it is as last year I worked up the Airportl near Stansted House. Third Avenue, you can see it on google map just but, you cannot get down the road to totally see it, it is a cul-de-sac and a bus goes down their and turns around. picks up BAA workers and takes them or drops them off here.
This is about 3/4 of a mile I'd say from Stansted Hall and St Marys Church where the Maitland Residence was. I have a complete Family Tree dating back many years, if you are interested. Also I may try and help in your search for your relative if you give me some information.
I HOPE THIS HELPS

HI Michelle,
Thank you for the reply! I find the story of this house and the family quite facinating. I'm not sure what family history I need on this line, other than a general idea of what life for a servant in this household would have been like. I'll look through my notes this week for that ancestor and see if I have any specific questions. I'll take a look at Google as well
kind regards,
Claire

Hello Sarah
I noticed you replied to my comment, I was Just wondering...........The Maitland Family Tree that I have could it possibly be your copy as the name Sarahs' Copy is on the front of it. I grew up in Stansted but was never interested as a child of any History of Stansted or any other part to the Country infact, I even hated it at school. Its only in my later years in life that particular places in time and where we originated from and also my family tree absolutely fascinate me know, this is surprising and is a total shock to my way of thought lol ;)
The PDF File I of Maitlands dates back to 1250 My Mother, Father and Friends are buried in St Marys, Church which is next to Stansted Hall I have seen the plaques inside the Church of The Maitlands.
I have been in the Church as a Child and occasionally when I visit My Mum and Dads Grave
In the Lancaster Chapel there is a memorial to Robert Prescott Fuller-Maitland who WAS killed by an elephant while shooting near Lake Barrngo, British East Africa, in 1912. 'Quote'

Where did you get the tree? My mum grew up in Stansted too, but had no clue about the connection we have at the time, and she got married in St Marys.
We went down last summer and took pictures of the plaques and graves.
Mum always found the death by elephant funny as a child!!

William Fuller. Maitland
He Went Trinity College at Cambridge University.
He Graduated B.A. in 1835 and M.A. in 1839
Although he never had any technical artistic training he developed very early in life a remarkable love for picture. During several journeys to Italy he became acquainted with the works of the early Italian masters, and formed the basis of an important part of his collection.
Formed a collection of English landscapes and of the works of early Italian masters, some of which were subsequently sold to the National Gallery.
After his death the bulk of the collection was exhibited at the South Kensington Museum; and nine of the most important were sold to the National Gallery
He loved the outdoor life and sport
