Title: McKeown
Post by: McKeown on Saturday 24 July 10 00:10 BST (UK)
Hi folks,
How are we? Hope we are all well.

Looking to see if anyone here can help me out. Monica from the Lanarkshire board suggested I post here.

I am looking for a location in Ireland, or any records for a Michael McKeown & Mary McCallum. Their Son, Patrick McKeown is my direct link to Ireland from Scotland. I know where he is buried, and I now want to know where his life began and what caused him to leave his home behind. I am guessing the Famine, but we do not know that for sure.

Can anyone here help? I am posting in the Antrim board, as I think this is the most likely place where he could be from. His Wife seems to be from Rasharkin, Antrim, so maybe this could help.

Thanks for your time,

Is the Michael McKeown you are looking for this one from that threa?
"Michael McKeown & Catherine McCallum
Son, Patrick McKeown 1823??"

If 1823 is year son Patrick was born then the information you are looking for is well before the start of civil registration. For earlier dates you need to search for church records but you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) and very few church records will go back to 1800.
Did Michael and Catherine also go to Scotland? If so,you'll probably find more details in Scottish records.

Thanks Andrew,
I dont think Michael or Catherine went to Scotland. I cannot find nothing.

However, I think I have a lead on where Patricks wife came from. I think he married her prior to coming here, so I am prsuming in those days, small villages folk would marry local....

This would be not far from it eh?

Don't assume he married a local girl. Rasharkin, Co.Antrim is just across River Bann from Kilrea, Co.Londonderry and there were always coming and going between the two places.

Ok.....

I am away to look at a map. I know Donegal a wee bit, and the dive to there from Larne. The rest.... I need to know.

Thanks!!

Had you any luck with Michael McKeown?  My gg grandfather was  Michael McKeown from Antrim. He married Elizabeth Nelson and my g grandfather William was born in Carrickfergus in 1865. I know they too had a Scottish link.

This is probably cat among the pigeons. But I have a Michael McKeowen (sic) emigrating to New Zealand (c 1877, aged about 23) from Ireland. But he could have been in the country earlier. That's all the detail I have, but from his death certificate I have his parents given as John and Margaret - no maiden name. He married Catherine BRADLEY in Wellington New Zealand and died in 1927. RC's.
