As I am pretty new to this family research I have not as yet visited PRONI or GRONI. If I book a two hour session at PRONI to research school documents is there likely to be someone there who can help me get started?
Also do I need the name of the particular school or just the name and DOB of the person I am researching? Sorry to ask so many questions but if I go over there I want to make it worth my while.

Hi
First of all if you want to see School Records you will need to get to PRONI before Friday 3rd September 2010 as PRONI will be closing to relocate then. Only records on Microfilm will be available after this date and School Records are not on microfilm. PRONI is expected to reopen in April or May 2011 for all records.
For School records you will need to know at least what area they were from if not the school. Staff will be there to help point you in the right direction.
What area are you looking records for?

I am interested in my maternal grandparents. I know my grandfather attended a primary school at Clandeboye near Bangor but if family lore is true he moved about alot following his father who was an RUC sergeant.
My Grandmother and all her family came from the Sandy Row - Donegal Pass area. Both sets or records would be around early 1920's.
I'm just beginning to look at what PRONI have available that may be useful to me and school records seemed the most appropriate. I'm not sure what other records I need to be looking at so any advice would be great.
Regards
John

You can check the e-catalogue on PRONI site before you go to see what school records are available, dates covered, etc. I was looking at school registers there a few months ago and some couldn't be found but was told check after the move and they'll probably have turned up (other orders came up with wrong documents, not found or in one case other items mistakenly in with the one ordered).

Thanks for the reply. My sister told me there were two. She must be going daft! She lives in that area. RosemaryJoan

My sister is not going daft after all! There ARE two libraries on the Cregagh Road. One is at Hindsdale Park, opposite Downshire Park and the other is between Portallo Street and Redcar Street, according to my Belfast Street map.

There is only one on the Cregagh Road. Cregagh Library is the one opposite Downshire Park. The other Library is Woodstock Road Library. It is on the Woodstock Road. The map propbly does not show where the Woodstock road ends and the Cregagh road starts.

I'm not sure if you can tell this from google maps etc, but if you are going to visit the Cregagh library from the Knock Dual Carriageway (A55) end of the Cregagh Road, it is quite well hidden from the main road.
In case this helps - approx 200 yards from the Carriageway - on the right hand side ...look out for a row of shops (bakery, newsagents, chemist etc)and a pelican/pedestrian crossing....Turn left immediately (and slowly) at this crossing and hopefully you'll be able to drive in to the library grounds and park.
