Title: Andrew Rae Gilchrist
Post by: Witherow on Friday 23 July 10 18:47 BST (UK)
Seeking information on the family of Andrew Rea Gilchrist CBE who was a consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh until his retirement around about 1965 (he died on 1st March 1995)
He was twice married initialy to Emily Faulds in 1931 and I believe they had a son and a daughter.
I think that the daughter may have followed him into medicine and qualified as a doctor.
After Emily died he remarried an Elspeth Wrightman in 1975.
Although born in Belfast, Northern Ireland his family on his mothers side have many links to Scotland, and I have a lot of information on this line back to the Wodrows of Eaglesham near Glasgow.

Any help would be much appreciated as I am not familiar with researching in the Scots records.

Hello Witherow,

I'm new to RootsChat and would rather communicate via PM.  (Sadly they won't let me PM until I have used the site 3 times so I'm hoping they'll let me reply to a PM from you in PM form without the required 3!)

I am Andrew Rae Gilchrist's daughter and if you would like to make contact to find out more about him and his descendants I'm willing to help.

Hello. I have just come across your request for information on Andrew Rea Gilchrist. I believe that the man you are asking about is my husband's 1st cousin twice removed. i.e. his grand dad's first cousin. You will find him on the 1911 census in Northern Ireland for Dromore Street in Ballynahinch staying with his mum (Catherine Hill Witherow)'s sister Lizzie Hamilton and her husband Dr Samuel Hamilton.Catherine's dad was Professor Thomas Witherow from Derry. He was a very notable minister and scholar, there is a wealth of information about him on line. If I can help you anymore I will be happy to, but this should steer you in the right direction. Kind regards, Sam

Hello again. Further to my previous reply, I have noticed that you mentioned in your post that you have information going back to the Wodrows of Eaglesham. I would be very interested in finding out the connection. Have you read Professor Thomas Witherow's autobiography? He mentions the Wodrow's of Eaglesham, but he didn't seem to be aware of what the connection was.
Kind Regards,
Sam Hamilton
