Post by: pDim on Thursday 22 July 10 19:59 BST (UK)
Hi after the parent and family details of James Short born 1808 Lincolnshire and wife Charlotte Trim born 1809. James and Charlotte married in 1831 St Mary Donhead Wiltshire and had at least 4 children in Wiltshire. Thanks

Where did the "Lincs" info come from ... there seem to be lots of local SHORTs in Donhead in the 1851 census.

Also, TRIM seems to be a Wilts name (none in my Lincs marriage index)

there is on IGI-extracted record

james Short christened 30 Dec 1810 St John Stamford Lincoln
Parents Edwd Short/Frances

I assume this is where the record on the trees has come from

How they have linked it to this James marrying Charlotte Trim I do not know -

This is looking like one of those "be very careful" families.

It involves travelling over 80 miles, travelling though innumerable parishes from one end of Lincs to the other (Killingholme to Stamford via Osbournby) then carrying on for another 160 miles to Wiltshire.

I am actually asking for someone else. She states that she belives James and Charlotte were born in Lincolnshire, I think Wiltshire as at least 4 sons were born in Wiltshire. Charlotte was born abt 1809 James 1808 or there abouts. The children you have listed are their children. Another son Ebenezer short was born in Wellington New Zealand in 1845 and died in Sandon/Sanson in 1876 at a very young age. There seams to be a problem obtaining parents for both James and Charlotte, and this is were the problem is. HELP!

I see you also have a thread on the Wiltshire board - I have linked it to this thread.

Looking at the 1851 census for Donhead. there were 3 adjacent SHORT households, all of them local people

James 64 + wife and dau
Thomas 51 + wife + 4
Betsy (wid) 60 + niece

all of them born at Donhead.

With a "home grown" supply of SHORTs, I'm surprised that anyone entertains the thought of bringing someone from over 200 miles away (unless there is reliable evidence for doing this of course).  I suspect the reason is the lack of Donhead Anglican baptisms (there are none) in the IGI.

Hi yes it seems very odd that they would move a distance, but they did seem to move around as Suz has suggested in her quote below:

There is a family in 1841 in somerset James 30, Charlotte 30, Job 7, Elijah 3, Reuben 9 and another child 10 mths none were born in Somerset

This is the family they also had other children in NZ. Ebenezer, Prudence, Charlotte, Alfred, Ryan, Henry, Isaac plus the other 3 listed. As an expert were do you suggest I look next.

Is it likely that the James 64 + wife is the father of James? Did this James only have the one child? Thanks Geoff-E

It's not for me to presume whether or not one James was the father of the other (although it would be my first line of enquiry).

I see Wiltshire Archives have Donhead registers http://www.wshc.eu/about-wshc/archives/306.html

If the SHORTs were mine, I think I would contact Wilts Archives to see if (or how) they could help.  There is an e-mail link on the left :)

I have the family tree on Ancestry about James and Charlotte Short and the connection to Lincoln is unproven but believed to be the parents.  We have tried all options to try to connect the James to Lincoln but no success.  He was a wanderer and not from Wiltshire on the census.  They left Uk in 1842 and had more children in NZ.  There are many descendents in Nz but no-one seems to know where James was born.  Charlotte was born in Wiltshire and we know her parents and grandparents.   I have checked and there are no James Shorts born in Wiltshire in 1808-1811.  We have different birth dates on different papers.

We would love to be able to connect James to somehwere and my hope by putting it in Ancestry is that someone would be related somehow or following the tree in the UK and have some details.  We know a lot of his life in NZ and of his children and descendents if anyone is interested.

Hi Lisa  Can you narrow it down to which child of James you are related to as they have many odescendents and it will make it easier.  I mainly only have information feom when they came to NZ.  There are a lot that went to Australia as well.  Information here is easier to get.   Information in the Uk is proving to be very difficult to get.  LS

Hi I descend from their son Ebenezer Short born Wellington New Zealand on the 1st August 1845, married Caroline Baker. I then descend down through Ernest Short and Jessie Ashworth then down through Walter Gilbert Short and Marie Hazel Moys. My grandmother is Gene Marie Short. Hope this helps. Lisa
