Post by: pringlebingo on Thursday 22 July 10 16:18 BST (UK)
Mary Stevenson's father - William Stevenson - was policeman at Gretna Green. Any information would be appreciated :) Especially his parents!

We need some more info as to what timescale is involved here

When was Mary born?

When and where was William born?

1881 census - she was Mary H

Village of Springfield Gretna

William Stevenson 32 police constable b Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire
Jane   32 b England
Mary H   10 b Kirkbean
James 6 b Dumfries
Thomas K 3 b Penpont
Jane A   under 1 Month b Gretna
Gretna ED 1 Page  1 Line 19

You will need to lookup one of their childrens births on Scotlands People to establish Jane's maiden name www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

That will help find their marriage in either England or Scotland

If they married in Scotland - their marriage cert will show both sets of parents names plus mothers maiden name
If they married in England - it will only show their fathers names and occupations

Thank you :)
Just remembered that my Gr-Grandmother's book has some information. She's written that he married three times, Jane being the third wife.
His first wife was Mary Heslop who according to Gt Grandma was Mary's mother.
His second wife was ? Kitchen and they had two sons called Thomas and James and his third wifer was Jane ? and they had a son called Andrew.
The Jane "under 1 month" is not mentioned - perhaps she died young?

What do I need to do for William's parents?

If only you had included that info in your opening post!!

From the IGI

MARY HYSLOP   Spouse:  WILLIAM STEVENSON     Marriage:  04 DEC 1868   Tinwald, Dumfries

MARY HYSLOP STEVENSON   Birth:  03 JUL 1870   Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright
Father:  WILLIAM STEVENSON   Mother:  MARY HYSLOP

Now that you have the date of his marriage - you can check it on SP to get his parents names

Hi there.

My grandfather was Andrew Stevenson, William's son.

William's father was James Stevenson, a ploughman, and his mother was Jane nee NcNaught (from Williams marriage cert to Jane Coltart in 1886. Both parents seem to be alive at the time of this wedding.

His birth is recorded OPR Births 870/0020 0059 Kirkbean in 1848.

William Gibson lawful of James
Stevenson and Jean McNight
Tallawhairn. Born 21st Baptised 28th June by Rev T Graham

Tallawhain is, I think, actually Tallowquhairn (OS grid ref. NX 992 584)

I believe that he had the nickname of "Red Rob" because of the colour of his hair and I think he died ~1925.
I don't have any other information available yet. But here's a photo of him with his wife Jane and my grandfather Andrew, probably taken in the early 1900's

Hi ganache!

I can't believe I missed this response (I'm pringlebingo under a new account). William Stevenson is my great-great-great grandfather. I am descended from his marriage to Mary Hyslop. He was indeed known as Red Rob and I have never before seen a picture of him so this is very exciting for me!

Thank you so much for sharing,

Olivia

No problem Olivia, here's another photo I've found that may be of interest to you.

I think that the woman at the back of the picture is Mary Jackson, possibly your great-great grandmother? The girl on the left is Mollie Jackson (Mary's daughter, I believe?) . My grandfather William Stevenson is holding his daughter Mollie and the other two women are his mother, Jane, and his first wife Mary.

When you say William do you mean Andrew? It's a wonderful photo! I think it must be Mary Jackson from my comparison with this photo I have of her:
I think Mary's daughter Mary was known as Mollie - will check with my Mum!

Here are all the Jacksons together - Mary Sr. is holding Mary "Mollie" Jr. :)
