Is there anyone that could possible save some of this pic of my Gt Grandad
He was in the Royal Navy Flying Corps and he was killed in action.
I do not have the knowledge to do this work
thanks in advance
-
I feel sure someone will have a go at it very soon. I wish I could help. Perhpas modify the title to mention that he was killed in action.
-
Thanks for your advice I changed the title
-
Hi
I did download this before you changed the title :)
However, it is a big job and will take me a good while - I can only work on restores in blocks of 30 mins max.
Others may come on and produce something faster but just to let you know that I've started on it.
I'm having to find little unblemished bits to repair him with.

Thanks so much for trying. This photo must have been in a wet garage of someplace horrible. I guess it is the only photo in existance before he was killed.
I have tried to do this myself, but I just do not know where to begin.
You can cut out the background if you wish. I do not want you to spend time that you do not have
-
Have you got a link to the details on the hat - not sure . All 3 of my cousins were in the RAF but I've only seen photos of them with cap type hats :-\
-
This is the only info I have
It is my mum’s dad in the Royal Naval Flying Corps during the 1st World 1
-
I found this link with photos of the unforms if it will help

One from me.
Bill. :)
PS Fitted new cap badge.
-
Bill, sorry I did not thank you enough. I was between busses so really was in a hurry. You did a great job. I appreciate your time and effort.

Bill, absolutely brilliant, considering the condition of the original
must have taken ages
Genie :)

(I borrowed his cap)
Gadget
-
It looks like we both borrowed the same cap Gadget only I reversed it to put the shine on the other side. ;D
Bill. ;)
-
I reversed it too, Bill, but I deshined the brim a bit :)
Here's a slightly different one
T'weren't the easiest, t'were it ?
Gadget
-
Certainly was a challenging one Gadget, but that's why we like 'em. ;D
Bill. ;)
-
I'm only an onlooker but just wanted to say I think you are all brilliant.

What wonderful work I wanted to thank Gadget, Bill, Terry for such excellent work. I am off to the UK on Monday for a family gathering so this pic came at a perfect time. Again thank you
-
Thought I'd try this one but I must be slow - I'm about half-way done. I'll probably finish it tomorrow.
I must say the restorers have done brilliant work already - I doubt if mine will be half as good but I'd would like to finish it. He's a handsome chap!
Here's a question: is there a button and strap thing (don't know what it's called) on his right shoulder?
-
I am not sure I will go into a web site and check. It is called a I think I am just trying to check a website and will let you know
yes on the left side there are 4 buttons. I will try and upload a picture for you to see although it is not my guy
They are called Royal Navy Flying Corps
[ English ]
Pilot Officer of England's Royal Flying Corps, c. 1917.
* Detailed prim shoulderboards
* Cap and shoes/boot tops resize with menu. Low lag, only 1 script each!
*).
This is all I could find sorry
-
There's still a few untidy bits on this but my eyes have packed it in for this evening.
Have a nice trip to the UK.
-
Thanks for such a wonderful job, for taking time and for your special care
-
This is a Naval chap and therefore he would not be wearing the Sam Browne....
That is an Army affectation ;)
He would have been Royal Naval Air Service...
-
Thanks for your reply, the picture was so badely damaged I could not really get a clear picture. I tried google and manged to get some photos. I did the best I could with what I could find.
-
Not to worry we can help more! What was his name...?
-
Gerald Barnett Todd b 17 Oct 1884 Swineshead, nr Boston, Lincs
I recall granddad telling me that he was in the Royal Naval Flying Corp and the army, and a search of the records suggests he was also in the Seaforth Highlanders, which is not surprising
Thanks, I am leaving for England Monday but will still check my emails

This is the photo that Bill and I used to reconstruct from:

Gadget

Thanks Gadget I am not sure where you got it but great. I know that your time is precious
Joy

Hmmmm....
Cant see a complete match for him...
http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?surname=todd&initials=&war=1&yearfrom=1914&yearto=1919&force=&nationality=6&send.x=52&send.y=8
-
No problem. This will take time I will try after I return from the UK. I might get more info there.
Again thanks
-
The CWGC site has all the dead of both world wars....The best place to start...
-
This is sad but for me it is connecting with those who gave their lives.
I will try when I get back. Thanks again

Here's a photograph showing a RNAS group at http://www.firstworldwar.com/photos/graphics/gw_royalnavalflyingcor_01.jpg
Bill.

Thanks Bill, I did find this pic but could not find a lone photo. Gadget just sent me one which is good.

Apologies if I've restored the uniform incorrectly. I didn't have another photo of the jacket to go by so I went by whatever I could make out on the original photo. I could tweak the jacket to look more like the photos linked to above. It would have to be in a few days though. Unless you are happy with what you have already. :)
(I can't see any white stripes near his cuff though - no matter how much I stare)
-
Do what you can do and not what you cannot do. I do not want you spending any more time.
Joy
-
Hi All.
Joy do you know where or when Gerald died.
Also which records showed you the information about
where Gerald served or any other family info that may
help find him.
Sandy

Sandy
do not worry about this. I will try and talk to family members when I am in the uk but they are all old so I do not count on memories. I will plod again the best I can

Blimmey Son (Scrimnet) ;D.
I thought we were going to be helpful here. ;D
Not that I can compete with you on Military.
Maybe on our home County. ;D

Just go back from weekend away and I think all you restorers have done a most wonderful job on the picture. Amazing.
