A strange thing has happened on my pc in the last 2-3 days which I cannot get rid of so would appreciate any help/advice
I am the sole user of the pc and do not have a login id to access it
Normally when I boot up - it goes straight to my desktop with all the various icons etc
Suddenly - I now get a blue screen with a line down the middle
Left of the line is the Microsoft XP logo plus "To begin, click your user name"
To the right of the line is a white square with what looks like a green frog in it and to the side of the square it says "User"
I now have to click the frog to get to my desktop
Microsoft have installed a number of updates recently - is this the result of one of them?
How do I get rid of it?
-
Not sure why it has suddenly changed but it is not a fault so don't worry.
The easiest way for me to describe how to change it is
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click User ACCOUNT
Click Change the Way users log on or off
Select Logon / Logoff Options
At this stage - both boxes should be ticked
Click Apply
That should be it back to normal.
It is possible you've somehow added a guest account or set up a 2nd named account which you can delete if necessary. *
At this point I get vague - it's one of these things that's easy to sort if you can see it on screen in front of you - but harder to describe.
* at the user account stage - close guest account

Hi Daval
I will try that later and let you know how I get on. I'm typing something up for hubby at the moment so want to finish it asap
I know I have not set up any type of account (wouldn't know how to) and everything was fine when I booted up on Sunday.
When I switched off on Sunday night - Windows announced it had updates for installation so I let them go ahead as usual. When I switched on yesterday - little green kermit was waiting!!
-
Good luck.
You may have to 'play around' with the options but don't be scared to try.
If you don't get the correct result - just follow the procedure again.
Without seeing your screens, I can't be more specific.
I'm signing off for tonight but hope you get it sorted.

Hi
Kermit's still there!!
Followed your instructions and the "Guest Account" is switched off but it appears that Kermit is a User Account Administrator and I cannot delete him
I then did a System Restore back to last week but that didn't work either - he was still there when I switched back on
-
Hmmm - thinks again.
OK - this WILL work. I've just gone through it on my pc with no problems.
Click Start
Click on Run
Type in control userpasswords2 and click OK
Highlight the user you want to log into automatically (probably "Administrator", then uncheck the box for "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"
Click on Apply and you'll be asked to verify the username and password to log in automatically. DO NOT ENTER A PASSWORD
Click OK and the next time you restart your computer, you'll automatically be logged in without having the prompt or Welcome Screen.
RIP Kermit.

I find this interesting as over the weekend I found myself unable to access the internet. I use Windows 7 and saturday night I installed a very large number of critical updates when I switched off. Earlier I had noticed a window had appeared which stated your password has been changed, which I hadn't. I clicked cancel on this window and just to be certain did a restart, everything seemed OK. Sunday no net, tried a system restore to the last point before the update, it just hung. After 20 minutes I switched off the machine. Switched on again, and managed to do a restore in safe mode successfully. So far no further problems, but this post makes me wonder if the problem was specific to Windows 7.

Hi Daval
Kermit lives!!
I followed your instructions and then re-started my PC but got an error message:
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction"
I clicked "OK" and there was my little green friend very much alive
So I then went back to your instructions and accessed the screen again just to check that the box was unchecked - which it was
It gives 2 headings
Users for this computer Group
Administrator Administrator
ASP. NET Users
User Debugger users; Administrator
I re-started again and got the same error message
I am going to do another system restore and think I will just have to learn to live with Kermit. Apparently I can change him to a duck or other available graphic!!
Thanks very much for trying to help - it's much appreciated
-
this happened to me ages ago. I have no idea why it changed but I now have to 'login' every time ::)
It's bloomin' Microsoft changing stuff, they are a NIGHTMARE!
-
I am convinced it's the result of one of the numerous updates that Microsoft have installed this past week
Unfortunately - when I did a system restore back to last week (12th July) I got an error message when I tried to access the internet saying that a particular file was missing and had to be replaced
I then did a system restore to last Friday (16th) but had the same problem so had to restore to the 19th
I don't have to actually login - I just double click on the frog which produces a message "loading your personal settings" and then eventually I get my desktop.
It's just a nuisance really as it's an extra step and delay to getting where I want to be
-
Sorry I can't help Carole. I hope I haven't made it worse? Have you stopped getting the error message by carrying out the restore to the 19th?
I think you are correct about it being as a result of the updates but it is weird that it affets you and not me - we both are using XP and presumably are getting the same updates.
It SHOULD be an easy issue to fix - I've done it before on my mothers PC and my daughters.

Hi Dave
Don't worry - everything is as it was (apart from Kermit). Thank heaven for system restore
I will just have to learn to love him!!
-
Your solution didn't work for me either, although I turned the password off when I restarted the computer, it again asked for my password.
As i said, same as Carole, one day okay, next day the split screen/welcome page
-
I had something similar a couple of weeks ago. I am also a sole user but had no problem accessing everything as before apart from having to click on the icon instead of the screen going directly to the desk top.
After this happened I also started getting the Dial Up connection popping up (I went onto Broadband in Dec and hadn't used it since then)
Problem was, even though I had unticked the box for 'default connection' the darn thing still kept popping up. Eventually it got to every minute or so, that I decided to upgrade my computer sooner than later. This one doesn't have a dial up so shouldn't get that problem anymore. Just got to learn my way around Windows 7 :-\ oh and transfer my gen pages.

If you still want to remove the login screen then here is how:
http://www.pchell.com/support/welcomescreen.shtml
If frogs are not your thing then you can change it for something else.
-
Downside,
that looks very similar(if not the same) to what I've suggested and has been tried by Carole - it didn't work for her.
Dave
-
Try the second section
What if I dont want the Welcome Screen OR the classic prompt? Can I disable both?
-
Yep, they tried that too.
The TweakUI looks interesting.
Think I'll try and download that just as a matter of interest.
Dave
-
Well that's a very small download and only took seconds to instal.
Looks like a handy wee tool to have.
It might help resolve the problem Carole and others are having but it may just be a shortcut for what they tried manually.
Full link to the download is this: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
NB CLICKING ON THIS LINK WILL TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE DOWNLOAD

I think Kermit has made his home here.
I did the download and then the procedure but when I re-started, I got the same problem as before - error message "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction"
Clicked ok and there was Kermit
After another system restore I had a brainwave. I deleted the Microsoft update KB2229593 which was installed on 14/7 and re-started.
Did it work - NO!! He's here to stay!!
-
I haven't tried the download yet but following other instructions what I get now is the page when you put your password in wrong and have to press enter to get the login box back and carry on as normal!
if that makes sense?!
-
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction
It sounds like you have not set a password - you must set a password in order to be automatically logged on as per instructions here:

I just click on the the whatever it called ;D on the chess board. On seeing your post I decided to have a look at mine
as daval says
users Click Control Panel
Click User ACCOUNT
As well as my own i had the switched off guest account and about 3 three others.I just deleted the others :)I noticed my computer now shuts down a lot quicker.

Have had no green frogs on my netbook which uses XP yet! However, I have had problems on here with the machine W7 telling me my password and user name has changed, I have become suspicious of Virgin media back up, and have removed it. See what difference if any that makes, it was a belt and braces thing really.
