I was wondering if anyone has any information of the above company which was owned and ran by my Great Grandfather and his brothers. His name was Charles Bottomley INMAN b 1857. He died in 1916 in Tockwith nr Whetherby in a house called Craigdoon or Little Manor House. Any info on the family would be appreciated. Regards Trevor

Just sent you a PM, as I have been reading all about him, his company, his political career as well.

I've just discovered that a relative in Yorkshire was a "Currier For Mineral Waters" on the 1911 census.
Any link do you think? I've not had much luck googling the occupation!

Marc,
I don't know, Googling currier you get a process in the tanning industry don't you? There is this website, maybe you should contact the web designer and ask him?

Maybe it was a mis-print for carrier.
What was your relative's name maybe we can have a look at him and see how we can help.

Thanks for looking but I have just found out on the next census that he was a Mineral Worker! Not sure where Currier fits in though - its not mentioned on the other census.
Thanks
Marc

What in 1921, how have you got that census?
Tom
-
Sorry - previous census! 1921! I wish!

I have some details of INMAN BROTHERS, mineral water manufacturers in Halifax around 1900 at
http://www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/i.html#i158
I don't know whether your secretive PM adds anything to the discussion

19th century British Newspapers from local libraries but available from other libraries online if you are not a member of s local library or are abroad. Nothing secretive just prefer to give details of how to make connection without whole web seeing.

I think the "currier" would probably be "carrier", ie moving the crates about to different retailers. I have in my bottle collection a few bottles from Inmans of Leeds, Hudds and Halifax, dating c1890 - 1910.
-
Hi Nev, Yes I would agree about the carrier. I also have a number ofbotllese bearing the INMAN name, purely because he was my great Grand father and his brothers. Regards Trevor

Hello Trevor Paul and Tom Piper, I know this post is old but I was wondering if you can share some information with me about Charles Bottomley Inman and his family tree? My husband is great-grandson of Charles Bottomley Inman and we have always known about mineral waters in the family but not much else. Can you possibly shed some light on our past?
Thanks in advance, Jess
-
Hi Jess, Charles Bottomley INMAN was my Great G. Father. His son was George INMAN b.1881 and his son was my dad Frederick INMAN b. 1927. If you contact me on my e mail of trevinman@hotmail.com I can supply you a lot of info. Regaqrds trevor

whilst we are on the subject Huddersfield area drinks manufacturers, does anyone know where Armitages mineral waters , soft drinks etc were located?
I think it must have been 1920/30/40's either Hudds , Holmfirth or towards Penistone.
My dear old dad's nickname was "Pop Armitage " because of the name of firm that made the fizzy drinks which locally we call "pop".
-
Would that be Armitage and Grimshaw? The Yorkshire Evening Post 02 July 1937 has this brief mention in summaries of wills:
Mr. J. S. H. Grimshaw, of 25 Mark Street, Paddock, Huddersfield, one of the founders and proprietors of Messrs Armitage and Grimshaw, minernal water manufacturers (net personalty, £1,792 -- £2,664.
Looks like they might have been based in Paddock (or were in 1903) and were founded by John Spencer Hardy Grimshaw and James Richard Armitage.
-
Could well have been this company.
Thanks.
-
Couldn't spot much in the online newspaper archives about them, but I'll have another go over the weekend :) Looks like the initial partnership was dissolved circa 1903, so possibly the first Armitage died around then? Presumably another Armitage then joined with J.S.H. Grimshaw
-
Would be interested if you find anything.
Quite difficult to know how large the distribution area was for different drinks at the time.
Would something made in Paddock be sold in Holmfirth?
I recall that when I was a child in the 50's , "pop" was always made by Ben Shaws, a local company. The lemonade was famously yellow and the American cream soda was pink with a thick frothy top.
Yum.
It was delivered house to house by the pop wagon.
Happy days!
-
Fond memories of getting bags of chips with bits from the local chippie in the late 70s/early 80s, always along with a small bottle of Ben Shaws "Space Special" pop - a luminous green cream soda which must have been jam-packed with e numbers and colourings ;D
Paddock does seem a long way from Holmfirth, so I'll see if I can spot any other possible mineral companies tomorrow. I've also got a few old Holmfirth guides from the 1950s/60s, so I'll have a quick look in case any of them have got an advert in them.

Hi both,
Just been reading the blog as I have been digging up my garden and found a glass bottle with the text 'armitage and grimshaw paddock' etched into it
-
Hi Trevor
I am late to this thread and I just wondered if you had any earlier information on the company.I have a genealogical tree for my family from 1950. It was compiled for the descendants of Henry Crowther of Westwood Golcar (1825-1906) (my 3*great grandfather). His mother was Hannah Inman 1782-1840. In the tree is says she was a "remarkable woman who, who stated her determination to work and suceed in business like any man. She was the moving spirit in the woollen manufacturing business at old Lees Mill. connected with Inman, mineral water manufacturer, Huddersfield. The tree just says she was from Hollinwood in Lancashire (by Oldham) but I haven't been able to corroborate that - there is a Hannah Inman I can find born in Kirkheaton daughter of Joshua Inman and Hannah Jessop but I don't know. Would you have any info on Hannah Inman and who her parents were?

My friend Steve owns the garage on the site of the old pop factory, Armitage & Grimshaw in Paddock. He is looking for old pictures of the company and any of its workers.. Anybody help?
