Hello again, I am having difficulty in finding death records. He was born in 1812 in Musselburgh, Scotland and appears in 1861 census in Wonersh, Surrey. William Ritchie Leather dresser is shown on 8th October 1866 Christ Church, Battersea on wedding details..I presume that he died before the 1871 census. Can any one help please?
Regards

Hi Eryl
What do you mean by recorded on wedding details? If he was recorded as father of the bride/groom this does not necessarily mean that he was still alive. Although deceased was often put by the name, this was not always the case.
There is this death:
William Ritchie
September quarter 1865
Hambledon 2a 74
Hambledon covers Wonersh where he was in 1861 and where his widow was in 1871.

Hi Jan,
Thank you for your reply, it helps clarify things, just not thinking straight, a fresh eye from another angle is great thing to have.
Thank you for the details of the death of William Ritchie. Can you tell me how much personal details there would be if I sent for a death certificate? and if it would be worth it.
Thank you again

Hi Eryl
A death certificate of that time would contain the following:
When and where he died.
His name
Age
Occupation
Cause of death
name and residence of informant of death
date death was registered
signature of registrar
Remember that the information re name, age and occupation was given by the person who registeredthe death, so how correct it was depended on how well they knew them.
Hope this helps.
