Hello Jan,
I had a quick look at the 1901 census on line (the free bit) a search for Ezra Tomlinson -two candidates that are possibles
Ezra Tomlinson 32 born Hull Yorkshire, County -  East Riding, Soldier
Ezra Tomlinson 33 born Nottingham, County - Isle of Wight,  General Labourer
Are these any help?  To find further info you would have to subscribe (pay per view)

Hi Pauline,
thanx very much for your help.

I looked on the 1901 census, it was very interesting.

My uncle from Canada was over for a visit, he was able to  confirm that the Ezra Tomlinson aged 33yrs & a soldier was indeed him!!

Thank you again ~ Jan  ;)

Hi Jan
I saw your posting purely by chance, the Tomlinson's are my Mothers side of the family and I am very new to family research so please bear with me.
My great great grandfather was Ezra Tomlinson (not sure if its the same one as your are researching??). But here is what I've managed to find if you are interested.

Born 1851 Morley, Yorkshire
Married Achsah Halstead in 1872
They had three children together Emily 1873, Clarence William 1880 and Alfred (my great grandad) in 1887

He was Private Ezra Tomlinson of the East Yorkshire Regiment joined in 1885 (have quite a bit on his army record)

Died 1895

Is it possible we are researching the same family line?? Kind regards Andrea

Hi Redpanda,

glad you got in touch although sadly your Ezra & my Ezra don't appear to be the same person??

My great grandfather Ezra was born in Hull in 1868.
His mother was Sarah a beerhouse keeper, (The Forresters Arms Liddell Street Hull), born In coningsby Lincoln approx 1840.
His father was Joseph Tomlinson, (not sure where he was born??).
Ezra, as far as I know, had two brothers - Joseph Valentine & Frederick.

My Ezra went on to marry Ann Eliza Beech in Hull In December 1893.
They had Ezra Cecil, Harold, Lawrie, Frederick - (my grandfather - born 1894), Gertrude & Rebecca.
They spent some time before WW1 in Nova Scotia presumably because Ezra was posted out there??
(My grandad Fred was born in Barrow In Furness Cumbria).

My grandfather married Lilly Bacon from Hull & had 5 boys & 1 girl (my Dad Frank being one of them born in 1924).

It just seems very strange that my Ezra appears to have been in the East Yorkshire regiment??
Ezra Tomlinson can't have been a common name even then??

We had a death of a distant relation a couple of years ago & although I didn't get to the bottom of it - it was suggested by the family researcher attached to the solicitors office that Ezra may have been married twice & possibly forgot(!!) to divorce one of his wives!!??

Would love to hear about your Ezra's army record.
Could they have been related?? - the Ezra name could have been  a family name???

I have to say that I get so far & then because of family/ work etc I have to shelve it  - so when I go back to it again I have to refresh my memory!!
(I will have a look at all the info I have once again).

Do you live in East Yorkshire??

Look forward to hearing from you - Jan

Hi Jan

Thank you for getting back to me. I told you I was new to this - I've made a mistake with my dates. The army records I have could possible be for your Ezra as mine had died before the dates on the records. (stupid me). If you type into your webserver East Yorkshire Regiment and go to The Heroes put in Tomlinson Ezra and you will get the records - these could possibly be your Ezra's. I will have to go back to the drawing board.

I live in Washington, near Sunderland - my Mam never knew her Father, which was the main reason for beginning the research. Let me know if you think the army records belong to your family! I'd be very interested.

Kind regards

Andrea

Got it Andrea - so sorry!
It is very interesting & yes it seems to be my great grandfather.
Thank you so much for telling me about the site.

Your Ezra was born in Morley, (leeds??).
Wonder if there is a connection? He must have had a connection to East Yorkshire or why would he have served with the E.Y Regiment?? You say that your mum didn't know her Dad? She must have got information from her mother??
Love to hear the story.

Regards Jan

Hi Jan,

Pleased I've been of some help, I don't know whether I will ever find the answers to what I am looking for but here is my Mother's story:

My Grandma nursed in Stoke Mandeville Hospital during the Second World War, she had a relationship while she was there with an orderly called Alfred Tomlinson. My Mam was the result of that relationship. When my Grandma came home after the war I know they kept in touch for a while, Mam remembers he sent postal orders for her. Over time the communications stopped, his last known address was in Dewsbury. I have found out that he died in 1975, Mam has always wanted to know if she has other family, as she is an only child and my Grandma never married. However, she didn't want to upset anyone if she searched and had found out that her Dad had married and had a family of her own. (Is this making any sense??) So I am trying to find what information I can about a family she never knew and never will know. She has been over the moon with what I have found so far, but the man she really wants to know about (her Dad) remains a mystery. I have recently applied for his death certificate so I am waiting to see if that brings any new information.

Good luck with your own research, it is certainly interesting and addictive but it can be painful at times.

kind regards Andrea

Hi Andrea,

How sad but so thoughtful that she forfeited finding her birth father so as not to upset her family.
It was a tragedy though that neither you nor your Mum got to meet Alfred and possibly half siblings?
I hope you find out more info?

You are on the right site as the people here are so helpful & Knowledgeable.
I'm sure someone will be able to help put the puzzle together.

Please let me know when you find out more info.
I think you are right - the death cert might throw up more information.

Good luck - Jan
