Title: Catherine Flanagan/Thomas Purcell Kilcullen
Post by: caos52 on Sunday 18 July 10 23:30 BST (UK)
Thomas Purcell married (2nd wife) Catherine Flanagan of Kilcullen, Kildare. She was born 1880.  She was in service. He was a carpenter and I recall my mother telling me he made wooden statues for the church. Thomas had a brother who was a priest - would like to know his name. He also had a sister Charlotte who brought up his children (Elizabeth & Thomas) in Scotland. Would like to know her married name. Thomas was a lot older than his wife. Would like to know his DOB. His second wife, Catherine Flanagan had relatives in Oldham but I have no addresses. Catherine lived in Reddish St, Broughton and Stamford St, Old Trafford, Manchester and had 8 children whose children now wish they had listened to their mums. I would also like to know when Thomas and Catherine got married but dont have much to go on.  Am off to Dublin in November hoping to consolidate what I can find out before then. Can anyone help with any of this?
Cheers.

You've mentioned lots of places but did Thomas and Catherine stay in Ireland? if not, when did they leave. Can't see Thomas Purcell in 1901 Irish census in Kildare.
Any idea of when the marriage would have taken place? and where? do you think they did marry in Ireland?

Thank you.  They came over to England , not sure when but my mother was born in 1925 and she was the youngest of 8.. I did find Catherine/Kate Flanagan on a kildare.brs and her birthdate of 28.8.1880 has been confirmed by family member but that's as far as I got. They lived in Salford for the rest of their married life. Not much to go on is it? Am trying to rouse the existing family for details.

No sure exactly how much of the information you want will actually be found in Irish records but will take one bit at a time.
"Thomas had a brother who was a priest - would like to know his name." this will be difficult without his 1st name. Did he stay in Ireland? if so might be listed in 1901 and 1911 census.
"He also had a sister Charlotte who brought up his children (Elizabeth & Thomas) in Scotland. He also had a sister Charlotte who brought up his children (Elizabeth & Thomas) in Scotland." Did she marry in Scotland or Ireland? If Scotland, you'll find her marriage in Scotland's People marriages- Scottish marriages list names of parents. If Ireland, will be listed in civil registration index.
"Thomas was a lot older than his wife. Would like to know his DOB." What age is listed on his death certificate? work back from that to figure out possible year of birth. Have you found him in any census records? again, use that to figure out possible year. Civil registration of Irish births began 1864 so if he was born before that there will be no certificate and you'd need to see if church records exist- they might also get you brother's name and other family details.
"I would also like to know when Thomas and Catherine got married but dont have much to go on." would they have married in England or Ireland or Scotland? (all those countries are mentioned in your post)
Found marriage- Thomas Purcell married Apr./June 1905 Kate Flanagan- Salford district volume 8d page 251.
Are you sure there were only 8 children from this marriage? they married in 1905 and I found 7 born 1912-1925.

Thank you.  There were definitely eight children from this marriage: Marie, Nancy, Kit (Catherine), Eileen, Chris, Ellen, Agnes, John.  From his first marriage he had Thomas and Elizabeth. Forgive my ignorance but as they were RC would the Civil register show his first marriage or would it just be in the church records.?  Also I am really pleased you found the marriage in Salford since this could mean he was likely buried here. It must have been after my mother was born, 1925, I know Kate is buried in the UK.  Would the Salford marriage entry show his occupation and address and does it name a church? If I can get a copy of the marriage certificate would it name his parents and give his age. Is this the first thing I need to do? I appreciate this help very much. Thank you :) .

A 1905 English marriage cert would show the same details as an Irish one - see : Details included on a marriage cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

So would include father's names, occupations, residences of bride and groom, and possibly ages for bride and groom (sometimes age is given as full - i.e. 21 or over)

To order certs for England/Wales - GRO UK - certs online (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/)  You will need the references aghadowey mentioned to order the cert.

Did either of the 2 children from 1st marriage marry in Scotland? Scottish marriage certificate list names of both parents and that might be a way of confirming 1st wife's name.

There are 3 Thomas Purcell deaths in Salford district after 1925 (not sure how complete coverage is or what's date for latest deaths there)-
1933 (age 78) so born c1855
1934 (age 65) so born c1869
1936 (age 42) so born c1894 too young

Now that we know they were married in Salford in 1905 the next logical step would be to find the family in 1911 English census (look requests aren't allowed for copyright reasons). Many people have found that census lists a more exact birthplace than 'Ireland' and will also give us a better indication of Thomas' age. That census also asked married woman how many children they had and how many were living.

An additional location detail is included on the marriage index on lancashirebmd.org.uk (http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi)

Church / Register Office : 'Salford Register Office or Registrar Attended'

Hi

I heard that the parish records from the church in Kilcullen have been transcribed and are now held in the County Library in Newbridge, Co Kildare.  I'm not sure how far back the records go but you could give them a call their number is +353 45 448353 or their e mail address is Newbridgelib[at]kildarecoco.ie.  I know they have a genealogy department.
Good Luck with your search.
