Most likely totally unrelated, but anything is worth mentioning - there's a thirteen year old girl named Hilda Victoria Charlton, born in Stockton visiting a family by the surname of Bernard in 1911. The youngest son of the family was born in Langthwaite, Arkengarthdale, they were still living in Arkengarthdale at the time of the census.

I've looked and can't find an obvious connection between this vistor and the family, apart from the fact two other members were also born in Stockton.

Hello

I am not sure if this will help but ....

The family (mentioned above by Pels) listed as Bernard on the 1911 census showed four people other that Hilda Victoria Charlton - a mother and three sons.

None of the three sons appears to have a birth registration in the name of Bernard. However, a surname that does occur with the same first names, in the correct registration districts, for each of their birth places is Bernhardt.

I think that this might be the 1901 census entry for the family (which includes the mother and the eldest son from the 1911 entry) ....

Thanet RG13/826 Folio 90 Page 29

Henry Bernhardt Head M 37 Plumbers Clerk Islington London
Maggie do Wife M 27 Durham Stockton
Fredk do Son 9months Durham Stockton

Moira House, Ramsgate, Kent

Ramsgate is shown as the birth place of the second son.

I think that Henry Bernhardt married Maggie (Margaret Ann) Wood in 1899 and that she appears on the 1881 census with her family, in Stockton, on the following link ....

Click for 1881 census entry (http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_5128557&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99)

Margaret A Bernhardt died in 1944 (Registered at Richmond, Yorkshire).

Any significance ?

I think this might be the link ....

Hilda Violet Charlton was the daughter of Thomas Grange Charlton.

His sister, Amy Charlton, married Robert Wood.

I think Robert Wood might have been the brother of Margaret Ann Bernhardt (nee Wood) .... as seen above on the 1881 census

Hi Shanted,

Welcome to RootsChat, especially in these circumstances !  :)

I'm wondering whether "Rubyredslippers" will receive an email notification to your reply - she had a problem and didn't see our replies earlier.

My advice would be to make a couple of further replies on this thread. You need two, or possibly three posts - this will then enable you to send her a private message by clicking on the green scroll under her name.

Any problems and I will happily send her a message on your behalf ! :)

Kind regards,

My mother, Edna Charlton, was the daughter of Thomas Grange Charlton and sister of Hilda Charlton. Edna was born in 1904 in Stockton-on-Tees.  She maried Charles Waller and Hilda married, I think, Robert Bruce (a bookmaker) and they had two chldren, a girl (Edna?) and a son, Stuart.

Any details as to grandmother, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Vivien
