Hi,
My 2nd great grandmother, Phoebe Fanny Norman, was born 01-Sep-1839 in Woburn, Bedfordshire to parents Samuel Norman and Mary Dawborne. Samuel and Mary were married in October 1828 in Woburn.
I am searching for any birth records/info on Samuel Norman. I know that he was born in Woburn c1802 but the year may be wrong. He was an agricultural labourer and he worked on "Jobs Farm"??? in Woburn.
Can anyone look up and pre-1837 registers for Woburn please or point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Debbie

Woburn baptisms up to 1875 have been extracted onto the IGI at www.familysearch.org , but I can't a baptism for Samuel Norman
Have you looked at the marriage entry to see if the witnesses provide a clue?
There are no burials in Woburn between 1771 and 1813 when Henry age 12 weeks was buried. There are then no non-adult burials in Woburn until Mary age 55 on 10 Feb 1855. So there's no hint as to who Samuel's parents might have been. Possibly the parish register might give details of Henry's parents, who might also be Samuel's parents

I wonder if he was the Samuel baptised up the road in Ridgmont in 1801?
Samuel Norman bapt 6 Dec 1801 father Edward mother Elizabeth poss nee Garret who married in 1798 Ridgmont.
A Samuel & Mary Norman bapt a son Edward at Husborne Crawley in 1825 but unless on the marriage to Mary Dawborne he is listed as a widower this may just account for the Ridgmont birth.
Workers on the Woburn Estate would have moved around these villages.

Hi,
On the 1841 census there is a family living in Woburn with the names Edward and Elizabeth as above. Edward aged 60 and Elizabeth aged 65. There are also two other men living there John Norman aged 35 and George Norman aged 15 years. Did Samuel have a brother called John perhaps born in 1806.
regards.

hello Tazzie,
Yes I think you may be correct he could the son of Edward & Elizabeth, in which case he was born in Ridgmont which joins on to Woburn if you no the area they are very close. I have checked him on census returns and his year of birth varies from 1801-2. The burial record for Mary Norman of 10 Feb 1855 St Mary's Woburn is Samuels wife as the next census 1861 she is missing and Samuel is a Widower. Samuel Norman dies in 1882 and is buried 6 June 1882 aged 81 yrs at St Mary's Toseland Hunts, so from this burial record he would have been born 1801.
Edward Norman in buried at Husband Crawley in 1843 17 January aged 66yrs. Husband Crawley is also very near Woburn and Ridgmont all in the same area.
Edward & Elizabeth had the following children
Mary c 27 Oct 1799 Ridgmont
Samuel c 6 Dec 1801
John c 17 July 1803
Ann c 20 Oct 1805
Sarah c 22 May 1808
Lissey c 19 Aug 1810
Richard c 10 April 1814
Hope this helps

Hi All.
Debbie I have the gravestones for Husborne Crawley yet can not
find one standing for Edward of 1843. A few are un-readable.
Both Tazzie (Cuz) and I have quite a few relations from the village
mine being Sibley, Page, Grace, Emmerton, etc, with David's being the
Surkitts as on his surname list.
Mine worked for the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey and lived at
Eversholt, Husborne Crawley, Aspley Guise and Ridgmont.

Hello Grumbles ,I have only today found this website having only recently started to research my family roots.
Samuel Norman was my Great Great Great Grandfather ,his son Joseph was my Great Great Grandfather .The info I have is that Samuel and his wife Mary are shown living at Jobs Farm Woburn in the 1841 and 1851 Census's .My guess is that he was a Tenant farmer on the Woburn estate as his is the only family shown at that address .In the 1861 census the family are shown living at 17 Leighton Street Woburn and he is shown as a Farm Labourer. This address is less than half a mile from Jobs Farm .
It is my belief that Samuel had a brother Joseph .A joseph Norman was born 5th March 1804 he married a Suzzanah .Joseph died in 1878 .His gravestone is in the old woburn graveyard close to my Great Great Grandfather Josephs gravestone .The gravestone bears the inscription that he was a faithful servant to 4 Dukes of Bedford .It appears that he was a Gamekeeper and that he died in Park Farm on the Woburn estate .
In the 1881 census Samuel is shown living in Toseland Huntingdon with his son William who was a chicken farmer .
Hope this is of help .
Simon Norman .

Sorry to disappoint you but Samuel Norman of Woburn isn't the son of Edward Norman and Elizabeth Garrett (my ancestors)
Their son married Mary Arnold in Husborne Crawley in 1822 and was buried there in 1826 after the birth of sons George (1822-1907) and Edward (1825-1858?), Edward was alive in 1851 but as far as I know never married.
Your Samuel maried in 1828 and died in Toseland, Hunts. (where one of his sons had moved )

Further to Bunnygirl#s post
Edward came from Simpson and the family were sent back there in 1810 before returning (by 1814) when Richard my great great grandfather was born. They then settled in Husborne Crawley
Beds archives has the settlement order
Edward Norman, wife Elizabeth, and children Mary (aged 10), Samuel (8), John (6), Ann (4), and Sarah (2). From Ridgmont P49/13/3/10 18 January 1810
All the children married in Husborne Crawley
and died there (except Sarah about whom I have no other info)
Mary married James Fossey and died 1854
Samuel married Mary Arnold died 1826
John married Elizabeth Gurney died 1866
Ann married George Fooks died 1884
Elizabeth married James Sibley died 1878
Richard married Mary Lewis diied 1870
