Title: Look up please! North Moreton - John wing 1805
Post by: flowergazer on Thursday 15 July 10 16:05 BST (UK)
Hello there,

This is a tough one, John Wing North Moreton 1805 ish.  He is not to be confused with Jonathan Wing with very similar dates.   John Wing seems to be avoiding being found! The names of his children fit in very well with the Wing family of North Moreton, but I have never found a birth record for him.  Can anyone help?!

Thank you for reading!

Hi

I checked the register transcripts for North Moreton the only John Wing baptisms are in 1766 1822  1837 and 1854.  There is as you say a Jonathan in 1807.  What else do you know about your John Wing?

Hi Debbie,

thanks for looking.  My John Wing states in the Cenus that he was born in North Moreton Berks.  He married Elizabeth Holmes in Great Marlow and set up home there.  Their children were called Ann? Eliza 1830,  Robert 1832, lucy 1839, Elizabeth 1841, John 1844.

Do you think he could have been illigimate and his surname is his mothers maiden name?

Thats about all i know.

nobody has ever been able to find him!

thanks again.

Hmm I see what you mean - he is consistant in his birth place, throughout the census.  Have you checked the marriage entry to see if the witnesses offer any clues?

My father's family are Wings and they all came from North Moreton. I have Johns born in 1745,1776,1836 and a Jonathan in 1807. There must be a link, surely ? I'll check my full tree and get back to you.

Hi Liz, great to hear from a potential family member!  However my John Wing was born around 1806 and is NOT Jonathan 1807.  Nobody can find a birth for him!  Would be glad to hear all you have though when you have had a look at your tree!  Thanks for getting in touch! This is my fathers side also.

I'm sending messages to all the tree matches I've got on Genes Reunited. I found him in one tree but only the information you already have, living at 17 Juniper Hill,Great Marlow. Isn't it strange that there's no birth record? Have you been to North Moreton ? If I find out any thing I'll let you know.

I've just seen your name on GR! I nearly sent you a message asking for information about John Wing !! My father was Reginald Wing, his father was William Francis Wing born 1877 who married Leah Widdows from Churchill. If you're on GR you can view my tree. You've probably already contacted all the people I've just sent messages to. We live about 40 minutes drive away from North Moreton and we've been there a couple of times. It's very pretty, lots of thatched cottages. If I can work out how to do it I'll post some photos of the village.

I believe this is an old thread, but maybe someone will see it!
John Wing was my 2X great-grandfather and a long-time brick wall in my family research. However, I think I have some answers.
I think it's almost certain that he was the grandson of John Wing and Elizabeth Alder, as I have 15 confirmed Ancestry DNA matches showing John and Elizabeth as common ancestors. Three of their children were married in North Moreton and raised families in that area. But William b. 1772 moved to Stokenchurch, where he married Alice Biggs in 1820, shown as a widower, and died there in 1849. The mysterious John Wing also shows up in nearby Marlow, marrying Elizabeth Holmes there in 1829.
Although we have no record of William's first marriage or John's birth, this would suggest that John moved from North Moreton with William at some point as father and son.
If this is correct, it links John to a long line of Berkshire Wings.

P.S Polomint - It seems we may be 5th cousins, sharing common ancestors John Wing and Elizabeth Alder!
