I have a book titled DAY BY DAY events in the History of the Parishes of Pinxton & South Normanton. It details events and snippets of information about the people of the villages. It details various events including property sales, some eventful deaths, interesting events surrounding the people such as court cases, holiday trips, cricket matches, eventful weather etc. It covers diverse dates from the last 5 centuries. If anyone had any ancestors in these 2 villages it might be worth seeing if they are mentioned. Provide some details and dates and I will see if they are mentioned. Regards Trevor

Trevor, I have surname interests in the PAGE, PERKINS, TOMLINSON families who were living in the South Normanton area.
HENSTOCK, WARD, DRAYCOTT are other surnames that lived in Tibshelf, Pinxton areas.
Please could you check whether any of these surnames are mentioned in the book.
Thank You Teresa
-
Hi Teresa, I have found the following entries, but only the name TOMLINSON appears.
28 July 1896, John TOMLINSON of South Normanton was fined 10s (50p), and costs or 7 days imprisonment for poaching on land at Cornfield Hall.
5 August 1905, Mr Charles TOMLINSON of South Normanton died.
28 August, 1898 The first wedding toom place at the Bethel Chapel, South Normanton between Mr Aurthur RILEY and Miss Louise TOMLINSON, youngest daughter of My Charles TOMLINSON.
1st December 1895, John TOMLINSON preached a sermon at the Bethel Chapel, South Normanton in memory of James FRYER who was killed at the Blackwell colliery explosion.
24 December 1949, John TOMLINSON J.P. of Highland Hurst, Sth NORMANTON, died aged 88yrs. He was a member of a well known family, clerk to the ParishCouncil and School managers. He was also closely associated with Bethel Chapel.
Hope some or all of these are of interest to you. Regards Trevor
-
Thank you Trevor, The Tomlinson family details look very promising. The Tomlinson's were devout chapel attendees and also were instrumental in this chapel being built. Thank you very much for looking this information up in your book.

Hi Trevor
Please could you look for any details of members of my WHITE family in Pinxton . They were farmers and i can only go back as far as a marriage of James White in Pinxton which was in 1808. Going by the age when he died i think he would have been born about 1785 ,and ive wondered if his parents had a farm in pinxton before him
Thank you
mari in oz
-
Hi Mari in Oz, Just got your request. Will finish my dinner and have a look. Regards Trevor
-
Hi Mari, I have had a look in the book and there are no mentions of the WHITE family. I do have James WHITE's marriage recorded in the Pinxton parish registers. He was married to Ann CALLADINE on 8 March 1808. Is this yours. Regards Trevor
-
Thanks very much for looking . Yes thats their marriage . I have their mar ,death and its a mystery where he was from . I guess one day the brick wall will reveal its secrets
Thanks Mari
-
Hi Trevor,
I'd be very grateful if you are still doing lookups to see if there is any mention of my HILL line in both villages.
I know there are dozens of them from the census records and across generations, they inter-married with the BALL and MOAKES families
In particular, I'm interested in Jonathan HILL, bn 1761 S Normanton, who married Elizabeth Nuthall bn 1767 Pinxton, and Elizabeth HILL bn 1825 Pinxton, who was a servant at Brookhill Hall and, allegedly, had a child by D'Ewes COKE, the hall's owner and who also owned the local collieries.
If it's too much, perhaps you can let me know the ISBN number of the book so that I can locate a copy for myself?
Thanks
Rob
-
HI Rob, Give me a little while and I'll see what's in the book. Regards Trevor
-
Hi Rob, I've sent you a personal message with my contact details on. Regards Trevor

Hi
I have convict George Richards born ?1778 Pinxton - he died in Botany Bay Australia 1831. It is said his parents were Thomas and Anne Richards. Do you have any information on his parents or his birth ?
Many thanks
Pat
-
Hi Pat, I have George as being baptised on 5 April, 1778, son of Thomas. I have found the following marriage in the transcribed Parish registers, 31 December, 1870, Thomas Richards to Ann HOLMES, marriage by BANNS which were read on 16, 23 and 30 December. Hope this helps. Regards Trevor
-
Hi Pat, I was just thinking if you made a request to someone who has access to the Australian records on Ancestry they may be able to tell you what ship he was transported on, date of arrival, possibly marriage details if he married in Australia and a burial date. Good luck. Regards Trevor.
-
Trevor
Many many thanks for that. I will follow up your suggestions and check out this wedding and birth.
Thanks
Pat
-
I think the wedding was 1770 also - probably just a mistype.
Pat

Hi Trevor, I am interested in the Downing family of South Normanton, including Zachariah b 1682, his father John (m Elizabeth Dobb) and his father John (m Ann Verden).
Nigel

Leave that with me and I will have a look through the book and report back to you . Regards Trevor

Thanks so much!
Nigel

There is no mention of the DOWNINGS in the book but there is mention of a DOWNING street in South Normanton. I have checked Google maps and there still is a Downing Street.
I have checked Pinxton Parish registers and there is mention of the following DOWNING:-
Frances DOWNING married Arthur WRIGHT on 13 Apr, 1697 both were from South Normanton. Thats all. If you could find someone with the South Normanton Parish registers they may be able to help you further. Regards Trevor

Thanks so much, Trevor - appreciated.

Hello Trevor,
Would you be able to look up any information on the Gent family from South Normanton? Particularly George West Gent, Grace Gent, and Ann Gent. George and Grace were married (and also cousins, I believe), and Ann was their daughter, born around 1837. George and Grace both died when Ann was very young.
Thank you so much!
Lindsey
-
Hi Lindsey, I have looked in my book and unfortunately they are not mentioned. Just to let you know that I am descended from the GENTS at PINXTON. My mums mother was ROSE GENT born in Pinxton and I can trace my GENT line back to Theophilus GENT who was born in Selston. Regards Trevor
-
Drat! Thanks anyway, Trevor!

Hello Trevor,
I have been researching the Revell family from the time of the Conquest up to about 1700. My notes on the Revells of Derbyshire are freely available on Rotherham Web [rotherweb@blueyonder.co.uk].
I have scant information for the Revells associated with South Normanton and Pinxton, and they were certainly established there in the early 16th century. I would be grateful if you would check your book for any references to them.
Thanks,
Mike Clifford
-
HI Mike, I will have a look through the Pinxton and South Normanton book for you. just as a matter of interest I have the transcribed Parish registers of baptisms, burials and marriages, which include a number of Revill/Revil/Revel entries. Do you want these? regards Trevor.
-
Hello Trevor,
The transcriptions would be extremely useful. I have a few for South Normanton that appeared in the Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological Society but suspect that there must be more.
You are welcome to a copy of the revised account of the Derbyshire Revells if it is of any interest.
Best wishes,
Mike
-
Hi Mike, I have checked the Pinxton & South Normanton book and there are 4 entries. If you send me a personal message with your e mail I can send these and the many entries from the Parish registers. Regards Trevor
-

Hi Trevor Paul
I just came across this thread and wondered if there are any interesting mentions in your day to day history of Pinxton on George Evans son of Thomas Evans 1799 and Mary Stenson
George was b 1827 married Elizabeth Watson and they had several children all born around Heath, Holm Wood and Pinxton
I have some info on the family but no specific baptism dates other than George's siblings and parents
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks, SC

Hi Trevor Paul,
Thank you very much. Could you possibly do one more look up for me please in the records for St Helens for the surname of JAQUES /JACQUES ? I have tried emailing the website: http://www.related2u.co.uk/ but I am not getting any reply back. I wonder if the look up service offerred on the website has been withdrawn.
Regards,
Paul

Hello Trevor,
Was wondering if your offer is still open for look-ups in your book and parish records. I'm looking for any info on Cornelius Cowlishaw a Shoolmaster of South Normanton who was killed in 1770.
Thank you so much if you can help but no worry if you cannot.
Nottsgirl1
-
Hi Nottsgirl,, leave it with me and I'll have a look and see what I can find. Regards trevor
-
Hi Nottsgirl, Cornelius was married to Elizabeth MASLAND on 7 June 1769 at Pinxton. There are no Baptism or burial entries for him. He may have been buried at Mansfield. Based on what you told me he only married for a short time before he died. Do you know how he died.. there are no entries for him in the Day to day book f Pinxton.
-
Hi Trevor,
Thank you so much for looking for me, I'm actually doing this research for someone else and all we know is that a William Wilkinson was found guilty of the manslaughter of Cornelius Cowlishaw , schoolmaster at South Normanton, Derbyshire.
I'll pass the marriage on to the lady concerned.
Can I just ask what date your book and records go up to please?
Again thank you so much for your help.
All the best
Wendy
-
Hello :)
Just in case this is the said Cornelius.....
Burials at St Martin's, Alfreton (no ages given)
Cornelius Cowlishaw - 4th March 1770
Cornelius Cowlishaw - 6th April 1778
Baptisms at Alfreton for Cornelius Cowlishaw
12th April 1734 - no parents recorded
26th June 1743 - parents Cornelius & Jane
No marriages for Cornelius at Alfreton.
-
Hi Dizzifish,
That make sense as Alfreton is very close to Pixton and South Normanton nearer than Mansfield (my sister lives in Pixton). So the 1770 burial would be the one, don't know how old he was so not sure which baptism is the right.
Thank you so much.
Nottsgirl1

Without wanting to sound cheeky I wonder if you could look up a couple of items in the Pinxton registers for me.
Marriage of Sarah HILL to Thomas BALL reported to have taken place 5th Feb 1807 in particular were they of age and who witnesses were also a baptism of a Sarah HILL circa 1804, Alice BALL circa 1807 and Thomas BALL circa 1810.
My thx
Rob
-
Hi Rob, The parish register shows the date of marriage as 5 MAY 1807, no occupation is given for either or any witnesses. The rector was Peter WILSON and it was by Banns. I have checked both records under Brides surname and Grooms surname and it iis the same... no further info.. Sorry. Anything else you need then please ask.. regards Trevor
-
Trevor ty for that any joy with the baptisms?
Rob
-
Hi Rob, The first one Sarah there is one born 1 January 1802 baptised 2 Feb 1802, father Henry Hill mother Sarah, he was a miner. Is this one yours? Others to follow. Regards Trevor
-
Hi Rob, Alice was baptised 19 April, 1807, father Thomas, mother Sarah. No birth date or other details. Regards Trevor
-
Hi Rob, No trace of thomas Ball in the records. Any ideas why not. Do you have any further details. Regards Trevor. Ps I will be off line for 2 hours visiting mother in hospital Regards Trevor
-
Trevor, Sarah isn't mine as far as I know. The first Sarah born circa 1804 was illigitimate so if a father is listed for that I'd be surprised. Alice is great and I have no clues as to why they are not in the records. Another researcher as them in her tree and I wanted to check before adding them even to my preliminary tree. I am still trying to prove what other researchers have said is correct. Somewhere between 1810 and 1813 Thomas the father died (if the others have it correct) and Sarah BALL nee HILL goes on to marry James MARRIOTT and become my 5 x great grandmother.
Unfortunately there is conflicting information in that the PR's on the wedding of Sarah and James lists her as a widow however the BT's list her as single. I have the second marriage details.
If you get a few minutes spare and could see if a burial between 1810 and 1813 exists for a Thomas BALL I would be eternally greatful but please don't put yourself out. I hope your mum is doing ok and getting better
Rob
-
hi Rob, Back from the hospital, and yes, thanks mum is making good progress. If I can first deal with the death of Thomas BALL. I have found a burial for a Thomas BALL on 22 January, 1810 aged 32years. There is no death date and the vicar is the same one who married him. It also says he was from Sommercoates which is next to Pinxton. I will look at the other details you supplied. I will send you a PM with my e-mail if you don't mind doing it that way. Regards Trevor
-
I have family members in both Pinxton and South Normanton , the Names CUTT
the names CUTTS and BAMFORD.I have been having trouble getting on this site I have not had an activation e mail unless this is it that has suddenly appeared,
my name to use is PERC .

-
Hi Searchlight
Sorry to hi jack Trevors thread, but I am also researching Bamford's of Pinxton / South Normanton. Some of them married into the Cutt family.
Carol
-
Hi Perc, Leave them details with me and I will have a look in the book and get back to you .. regards trevor
-
Hi Trevor I must be getting old , it seems the reason I couldn`t get on is that i`m already on and such a lot has happened this last year that I had forgotten.
Thank you for offering to sort it for m but I have found my old details
-

Hi Valerie, Reference your post re: Pinxton Parish registers, here is what I have:
Joseph CLARKE buried 22 January, 1908, vicar was Sidney COKE. He has a memorial at reference CY-5-12-05- No. 5 and he is linked with Eliza 12 March 1927, I assume his wife. She died on 8 March 1927, and is shown as was residing at Town Street, Pinxton. and was 83yrs.I believe there is a photo of the memorial but I would need your e mail for me to send it. Perhaps you could send your e mail address in a PM.
Next is John CHARLESWORTH 86yrs, buried 18 March,1901, vicar Sidney COKE. No memorial.
Eliza CHARLESWORTH buried 19 September 1874, aged 57yrs, vicar PJ Woodgate- no memorial.

No record of your other Thomas HIND being buried but he was born 11 January, 1726 father was Thomas, mother was Dorothy. He was baptised following day on 12 january 1726. There is no record of his marriage in Pinxton. he must have married in her parish as was common.
No trace of you Mary HIND being buried in PINXTON
There are no baptism records for any of the names you submitted in either CLARKE OR CLARK.
Reference your Lucy CLARKE I have her birth date as 5 Feb 1895 and baptism is recorded as Easter 1896, father William a miner, mother Sarah, Sidney COKE was vicar. I hope all this helps. If you require anymore. then please let me know. I will send you my e-mail in a PM. Regards Trevor
-
Hello Trevor
I can't thank you enough for all the wonderful information. I shall have a very happy time checking my tree and adding the details you have sent.
I particularly like my Thomas Kitchens being leader of the bellringers and am intrigued that my nanna, Lucy Clarke, seems to have been a year older than she thought!? She died in 1994, just short of her 99th birthday. She was hoping to live to be 100 and it would appear that she almost made it.
I will be in touch by PM asap
Valerie

Hi Trevor, if you're still doing lookups I'd love any information about the following people who lived in South Normanton:
Edward BACON 1738-1787, married Ann STAINROD 1739-1776
John BACON 1765-1840, Edward Bacon's son, married Elizabeth BOWERIN 1764-1852
Mary BACON 1800-1852, John Bacon's daughter, married William JOWETT 1801-1842
Sarah STORER 1710-1785 , Ann Stainrod's mother, married Thomas STAINROD 1715-1784
Thank you very much!
-
Hi Silverleaf, Sorry about the delay in replying but as I mentioned we are still going through the assessment process for Fostering and there is an unbelievable amount of research and work. Anyway I have a good look through the book and there are no entries for the names you have given me. I also have records of baptisms, marriages and burials but only for PINXTON. If you need any look ups for Pinxton then let me know. Sorry I could not be the bearer of more positive news. Regards Trevor

Hi
Just saw this thread and wondered if there was anything mentioned about a colliery accident in December 1858 where my ancestor Francis (Paulson, Pawson, Poulson, ...) was killed?
Damian
-
Hi Damian, I have checked the book and there is no mention of the accident. I have also checked the Pinxton burial records and he is not listed in those. Regards Trevor
-
Thanks for looking, sounds like it could have been a one-off accident rather than a more general incident. Francis was buried backed in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
-
Hi Damien,
Hopefully this will help a little bit in discovering what happened.... sad isn't it :'(

The deceased was at his usual work, when a portion of bind fell, and buried him alive. The roof of the pit was timbered, and the accident did not appear to have occurred from want of care on the part of the deceased.
A verdict of accidental death was returned.

Thanks for looking for me Trevor. :)

Hi
If the offer is still open, I am looking for any info about those with the surname ELLIOTT. My 4 x great grandmother Anne Elliott had three children.
Elizabeth daughter of Ann Elliott christened 21 April 1794
James daughter of Ann Elliott christened 5 February 1797
Richard son of Ann Elliott christened 6 January 1804
All three were born out of wedlock and therefore the father, or fathers, name(s) are now lost forever. Following on from these birth entries came the rather sad news in the burial register
"Ann Elliott buried 29 January 1804, a single woman. Also son Richard buried 19 January 1804, the spurious son of Ann."
There is an Ann Elliott christened in 1775, father Thomas and mother Ann and a fair sprinkling through the register of Ellicock's and Ellot's also. There is an entry for marriage in South Normanton for Thomas Elliott m Ann PARSONS on 26 Dec 1739 which may be the next level upwards.
What happened to the two children after Anne’s death is unknown but I would assume a relative in the area cared them for before being they were sent out to work. Both survived to be present in later census records. Unfortunately, neither was married after civil registration was introduced in the late 1830’s, as it would have been interesting to see if a father’s name had been entered on the marriage registry.
Any references in your book would be welcome. There are no bastardy orders or removals by the way.
Dave

Hi there
I just came across your offer via Google. If you are still offering, I would very much appreciate some assistance on the following ancestors who were from Pinxton.
My 2xgg, 3xgg, 4xgg and 5xgg were all named George Wild. 2xgg and 3xgg went to Australia during the gold rush in 1860 and didn't return to England. 3xgg was a blacksmith and died in 1867 in Melbourne (my hometown).
4xgg George Wild was variously a blacksmith and retail beer seller and grocer and probably the publican at the Three Horse Shoes pub in Pinxton in 1857.
5xgg George Wild was born in 1756 and married his second wife 19 yr old Elizabeth Horseley in Selston in 1787. He was living in Pinxton at the time. His parents were William and Ann Wild. I would love to know when/where William and Ann Wild married and Ann's maiden name.
Any info on 5xgg George Wild's first wife would also be fabulous as would any information about any of my George Wilds and their wives. William and Ann are my priority though.
Many thanks
Therese :)

Hi Tessacate
Welcome to Rootschat
I know a little about your 3x gg George Wild who married Caroline Walker in 1834. She is part of my tree, but not on my direct line. I have a photo of her grave and George is mentioned on it. I believe George Wild left for Australia in 1851 and died 1867.

Hi Carol
Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my message and welcoming me to the forum. I'm also delighted to meet someone who has a shared interest in one of my ancestors (ie Caroline Walker).
It was my 4xgg George Wild was married to Caroline Walker (keeping track of 5 generations of father and son called George has done my head in at times trying to keep track of them, hence having to refer to them by generation number to keep them straight in my head :)). He died in the Melbourne Hospital (now known as the Royal Melbourne Hospital) from Cancer of the Parotid salivary gland on the left side of his neck. So sad he never saw his wife and other children again. I visited Pinxton last year and took a photo of Caroline's grave. I have also visited 4xgg's unmarked grave in the old Melbourne Cemetery in Carlton, Victoria. I was therefore so pleased to see such a substantial headstone on Caroline's grave in Pinxton and to also see 4xgg George mentioned.
I appreciate she is not on your direct line, but if you are interested in the reasonable amount of info I have collected for Caroline Walker (and her family) don't hesitate to let me know. I'm very happy to share.
Thanks again for your message.

I have posted elsewhere on the site ( have just joined and learning my way around) and wonder if anyone might have any information on Blackwell Miners WW1 casualties - in particular I am searching for a photo album given, I believe ,to relatives of the casualties . In it is a photo of James Wilson ( grandson of James Fryer killed in Blackwell Colliery Explosion 1895 ) and I should so like a copy of the photo as I have no other. ( I owned the album as a child but unfortunately it was lost)

Hi, I am not sure whether your book covers what I am looking for. I am particularly interested in Langton Hall (sometimes seen as in Pinxton sometimes viewed as in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Notts) which was old even by around 1700. The reason for my interest is that I am descended from Joseph Millns who married Ann Hodgkinson on 30 November 1788 at St Peter & St Paul's church in Mansfield. I can find little on Ann Hodgkinson except she was 28 at the time of marriage making her birthdate 1760.
Stephen Glover the historian wrote a pedigree of the Millns family. He noted that at the time of the marriage Ann Hodgkinson was 'of Langton Hall'. However, there seems no evidence to back this up.
If you have any records relating to Langton Hall or any Hodkinsons who might have lived there in the 1700s I would be most grateful to hear from you.
Many thanks, marp

Hi Marp........nothing much I'm afraid, But the address is Langton hall Kirby lane Pinxton....and appears to be now a collection of cottages........If you Google Langton Hall and scroll around \ bit..there are some interesting snippets and photographs to be found..probably not of much use to you..but interesting. If you get through the initial garbage about House sales etc..there may be something by scrolling onto the succeeding pages.
Best of luck
Derek.

I am not sure if you are still on but I'm looking for the Ball family. I know of Thomas born 1665 and died January 11, 1711? William Ball born June 25, 1705 and died March 28,1783. And more.
Thank you,
Danielle
