Dear List,
I have a number of photographs from a small album which I need to have a rough date of when they were taken as it may help in identifying who they are.
What I should like to know is when these photogrphic studios were 'shooting' in Sunderland.
1) W.STRINGER - Photographic Artist. 2 Sunderland St. Opposite Bridge Hotel. Sunderland. Also 143 High St. (I have one photo with the 2 addresses and one with just the Sunderland St address so presumably they opened the High St studio at a later date)
2) A.D. Lewis. Photographic Artist. 5 Hinde St. East, Newcastle-on-Tyne (Whoops! that one is Newcastle)
3) Scarbro Photographic Comany. Toward Rd. Sunderland. This photo has O'Connor Sunderland printed at the bottom on the front.
4) Clem Humphrey. Sunderland
Hope someone can give me some dates. Have left the Newcastle one in just in case.
Any help appreciated.

hi there, have you thought of using the historical directories:
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/
to help with companies /dates?

Thank you for the Directories Web Site Diddy.
I have just looked and they are not in there. So that probably means that they are after 1890.
Any other help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have a photo from A. D. Lewis, 5 Hinde ST, Newcastle also.
I think it was taken between 1855 and 1865. I have my gg grandmother's
photo book. I have found most of the pictures to be from that era.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your helpful replies.

I have now found Alexander D Lewis was a photographer at 5 Hinde St Newcastle in the 1871 census and had moved to a Photographers shop at 111 - 113 Scotswood Road in the 1881 Census and was at 110 Scotswood Rd in the 1891 Census.
I can not find him on the 1861 Census.
So I presume one of the photos is between around 1861 and 1881. The earlier date must be about the same as yours.

I have found the Jno Ridley Stringer 15 Waterloo Place -h 2 Salem St, Sunderland on the 1891 Census. I can trace him back to the 1851 Census when he is living in Newcastle at the age of 7 with his father Thomas who is a hairdresser and his brother Wiliam who is also a hairdressers assistant - aged 8. William goes on to be a hairdresser in Liverpool.
John Ridley Stringer is a Hairdresser in 1871 in Sunderland then goes on to become a photographer in Sunderland.
On the census in 1851 There is also a brother-in-law Robert Ridley living with them. Now the family I think these photos could be from are the grandsons and granddaughters of a William Reed and Sophia Ridley. (I can not find a birth for her anywhere) So whilst I can not connect them at the moment I can not overlook the co-incidence.
I have seen a section on rootschat which people date photographs so if I can scan them & transfer them I shall ask for help there.
Has anyone else got any photos from these photographers that they can tell me a date?
Thank you

Since posting the photos on the Photographic Dating forum the new info is that they date from around 1860 to early 1870's. Which is quite early for photographs.
So that would mean that 'William Stringer' was operating as a 'Phototgraphich Artist' at '2 Sunderland St - Opposite Bridge Hotel' and 143 High Street, Sunderland between those dates.
Can any one help me find him?
I can not find him in the Directories.
Has any one access to the Corder Documents please?
Any other suggestions or info gratefully received.

Dear Frederic
, my great grandfather John Edward Devitt lived in 75 Hinde St with his parents according to the 1871 census . The name was misspelt as Deveitt .He came to Australia in about 1876/77 and I was wondering if you had some history of Hinde St in that time. I understand that Hinde St was incorporated into Scotswood road before the 1881 census . John Edward Devitt would have been 13 in 1871 , he had an older sister Margaret who I cannot trace after 1871 and his parents were Edward Patrick and Ann. Edward Patrick was a bricklayer, and I have no other record of him, his widow Ann came to Australia and died in 1882. Any history of that time would be welcome, Judith, Australia
