Hi everyone,
A bit of a stab in the dark this one. Joseph Jones is thought to have been an illegitimate son of Hannah Hughes. The family came from Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham but it is thought that Hannah was sent to Ashton in Makerfield to have her child.
Would there be a birth record for him in that area showing his mothers, and possibly, his fathers name?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Gwyn

Gwyn - both FreeBMD & LancashireBMD seem to be complete for the area at that time - Ashton in Makerfield was then in Wigan registration district. Neither have a Joseph Jones registered in that area 1915-1917 - but if he was illegitimate & his mother's name was Hughes I considered registrations with that as surname & mother's maiden name which on FreeBMD produced one result:
Mar 1917 Joseph E D Hughes Wigan 8c 241.
On LancashireBMD this is listed Joseph Edward Davies Hughes in the Ashton sub-district under 1916 (I've found before that occassionally the transcribers for the local BMDs have picked up the date of birth rather than that of registration which looks as though is the case here). I've looked on LancsOPC site & there isn't a matching baptism.

that sounds interesting, might be worth following up, many thanks for that.
Best wishes

Gwyn - I didn't know if that was a total "red herring" so I hope it may be relevant. I've also seen it suggested that in these sorts of cases the child's name may offer a clue to the paternity - perhaps Edward Davies or a Mr Davies - or this could be clutching one straw too many.

its a good clue, the suspectd 'father' was a married next door neighbour named Edward Edwards and Davies was the maiden name of Hannahs mother.
I have found the birth on Ancestry so will be sending for the certificate, thank you very much.
Best wishes
