Title: Marriage in Louth
Post by: aggiebagwash on Tuesday 15 June 10 12:19 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the marriage of Thomas Short and Ann ??? circa 1820.

On the 1851 Manchester census Thomas is aged 53 born Louth and Ann 53 born Co Cork.

Their children are:
Bridget born circa 1828 Louth
Ann born circa 1828 Louth
Catherine born circa 1830 Louth
Sarah born circa 1831 Armagh
Felix born circa 1833 Armagh
Ellen born circa 1839 Louth

There may also have been older children.

Does anyone know how I could find the marriage of Thomas and Ann?

Since the marriage is well before the start of Civil registration you will need to research parish records - so the first detail you need to know is the family religon.

To check for an  early marriage you would usually need to know a detailed located first - i.e. parish, town or townland.

Some Co. Louth records are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at www.irish-roots.ie - but note they only seem to have Catholic records available at the moment and no Church of Ireland etc

Note that some RC parish records do not start until after this time.

Thank you Shane I'll see if I can work out what religion they were. I suspect it wasn't RC though.

Is there a particular reason to think that they weren't Catholic? with children named Bridget and Felix I'm inclined to think they might have been R.C.

I don't know I am waiting until daughter Ann's marriage certificate arrives to see which Church she married in. I know that where I've found a baptism or marriage record for Ann (the dauhter's) children they were all in C of E churches but I'm not dismissing the RC angle just yet.

The names made me think they could have been RC as well I'll just have to be patient and hope the certificate comes soon.

I am still looking for the marriage of Thomas Short and Ann (Unknown) circa 1826. Their first child was born around 1827 in Dundalk so I am hoping that they married there. Their religion was Church of ireland.

Is there anyone who would be willing to do a look up for me?

sorry!

They could be worth tracing back through certs and census to see if they might link up eventually with your Short family. There could be clues there to follow if you have nothing else to go on..

I've got them on all the certs and censuses that I can find. They seemed to have arrived after 1841. Thomas was born in Louth and Ann his wife in Cork and the 6 children were all born in Louth so I was hoping the marriage would be there.

I'll keep looking and hopefully I'll be able to pick up a clue somewhere along the lines.
