Title: Any PESKETT info.
Post by: G. Peskett on Sunday 23 May 04 03:59 BST (UK)
This is a broad request but certainly not one that I want anyone to go out of their way for me.  If you have and PESKETT information could you forward it to me, as I'm in the early stages of a one name study.  I have the info from the IGI, 1881 census and partial census info for 1871,1891.1901   Any thing else would be great no matter how big or small or from what county or country, England, Canada, US etc.

A million thanks for anything.

Hi Gerald
How strange: I was about to post a census lookup for PESKETTs in Dartford, Kent, England, and there's your "Any PESKETT info" staring me in the face.

The following is somewhat convoluted, but that's what gives it a bit of interest.

My G-Grandmother was Sophia PESKETT, b.1847, d.1874 in Dartford, Kent. She married James SMITH (don't know where or when) and had a son, George James SMITH (b.1868, d.1957), who became my mother's father.

I have no proof yet, but Sophia may have died at the birth of a daughter, Sophia Jane E [presume Elizabeth] SMITH, who also died in 1874, age 0.

After Sophia's death, James, her husband, married Emma Elizabeth PESKETT, formally KEMPTON, whose first husband was James PESKETT, b.1848, d.1881. The children from this first marriage were James b.1873; Thomas Henry b.1874; Sophia Elizabeth b.1876 and Amy Elizabeth b.1881 (all PESKETT).

The 1891 census shows James SMITH as head, Emma as wife, George J as son, Thomas PASKET [note spelling] as son, Sophia E. PASKET as daughter, Amy E. PASKET as daughter, and a new son, Leonard S. SMITH, age 6, from the current marriage; all living at 13 Maiden Lane, Dartford. I haven't found James PESKETT (b.1873) yet. [Note that PASKET is not the only variant spelling: the 1881 census shows the family name as PISKETT; and the 1901 census has the remaining two at that time, Thomas and Amy (Sophia had married), as TESKETT].

Sophia married Charles KEEP in 1896 and moved to Woolwich, where they had a number of KEEPsakes;-). Amy married Ernest V. POWELL on 12 Mar 1916; and Thomas, a lighterman working on the river, died by drowning some years later, ending the PESKET dynasty.

I hope this is of some interest to you, and if so, you may like to help me out with the request I was going to post here; which would get these PESKETTs a step closer to the wider world of PESKETTs.

It seems likely that the original James PESKET, b.1848, and James SMITH's first wife, Sophia PESKET, b.1847, were siblings. If this were the case then James would be 2 or 3 years old at the time of the 1851 census, and Sophia would be 3 or 4. An 1851 census lookup, presumably still in Dartford, should prove or disprove this relationship and possibly give us names and ages of their parents, siblings etc.

Anyway, I hope this has been of help to you. I don’t know what resources you have. If you can't help with the above don't let it bother you; I'll post a request here later.

I probably have a few more details than those above. Let me know if they would be of interest to you.

Best Regards

Terry

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the info.  I had the marriage of James to Emma Kempton, but nothing else on it.  All the rest of the info. is new to me and greatly appreciated.  Anything else you have on this family would be great.  I'm afraid I can't help on adding anything else for you.  If you make a lookup posting I'll be watching.  The biggest problems trying to put the families together is the variation in spelling from census to census.  It make it difficult keeping track when the spelling changes so drasticly every ten years, and then the registrations are made under a different spelling.   To add to that names like PESCOD have continued with that spelling for hundreds of years and are not closely related, but the census uses that spelling instead of PESKETT.  It's tough.

Deptford, Woolwich and Plumstead in Kent have come up frequently with the PESKETT name, even branches of my line ventured from Hampshire and Sussex to Kent.  Unfortunately I don't have much from there.

Keeping an eye out for your posting and hoping it will tie in with some of my info.

Gerald

Hello ,
I have just joined this forum and I am doing a one name on BOORER.   There is a connection with Peskett via marriage , which I was looking at earlier today.
You probably have the info as it is from the 1881.
I refer to Henry PESKETT at 5 Worthing Road.Horsham.
I have not taken this section of research any further forward than that I believe Henry married Elizabeth nee BOORER on 3 March 1866 Horsham.
I look forward to any comments or further sharing of any information.
Cheers
James.

Hi,
Thanks for the message.  Yes, I had the marriage of Henry and Elizabeth.  Afraid I can't give you any more info. on the Boorer line other than her mother's name was Eliza (from the 1881 census).  Henry's parents were Edmund Charles Peskett and Eliza.
Sorry I can't offer anything to help your research.

Gerald

Hi,

Reference your request for Peskett information.

            www.geocities.com/heartland/lake/4535/newman.html

The above site has a Peskett / Newman connection which connects with a branch of MY tree.
Unfortunately, I have had trouble getting through to them via the e-mail link in the above site.
So near yet so far, eh .... and no forwarding address ...........!!!!!.

The site appears to have been 'built' in approx 2000, but the e-mail address
appears out of date ?.

Would you have had any communications with the sites originator ?

My Great, Great Grand-father was Edmund Newman, his SISTER was
Caroline Elizabeth Newman who married William PESKETT, at Portsea in 1830.
Caroline NEWMAN's parents ( Richard / Elizabeth [ n.Medhurst ] ) had
Midhurst, Sussex connections.

The above site seems to evolve from one of the sons of Caroline and William Peskett,
it would also seem that he left to go to America, although his parents stayed in England.

Look forward to hearing from you                    Mick Newman

Gerald,
I have a connection to the Peskett family in my tree, Robert Tobit Peskett is my great great grandmother's cousin's husband.  Robert married Maud Mary McQueen, cousin of Alice Sarah McQueen.
Alice Sarah married Walter Howard, my great great grandfather.

Due to the unusual name of Tobit Peskett I did a search on the internet and found another tree which links in to the Tobit Peskett's that maybe of interest to you, http://dinasgenealogy.co.uk/, this tree has Robert's sister Elizabeth Tobit Peskett marrying into the Cullham family and extends more in that direction than on the Peskett side of the family.

I have been in contact with the tree owner and they allowed me to take whatever info I wanted.

It was interesting to find out that this part of the Peskett family had several members who were in the 4th Suffolk Regiment and were in Barracks in London in some of the Censuses, which is why Arthur Ernest Tobit Peskett, mentioned in one of the replies to your post, was born in Ireland as his father George would have been stationed there in the Curragh Barracks for a while.

If you search for the Tobit Pesketts you will also find that Harry Tobit Peskett was killed in the Jervis Bay incident, where one ship saved the rest of the convoy by sacrificing itself to aid their escape from danger.

There is also a reference to the burial of George William Tobit Peskett who died in 1987 in Australia, George William is the Grandson of the George previously mentioned above, and son of George Jnr, confusing I know.

George Snr married Sarah Tobit (I think) going by the carry forward of the Tobit name although I have not been able to confirm this and according to a previous post they have a different surname for Sarah.

They had 8 children:
Robert
Elizabeth
George
Arthur Ernest
William
Agatha B
Horace
Gertrude

I have not done much research going back further into the past beyond George Snr so I hope this is helpful and maybe between us all we can fill in the blanks.

I have my tree on two sites if you are interested in looking at them, one is on http://howardian.tribalpages.com but this is not as up to date as my main tree as it does not allow a search function for further connections and is very manual.

The other one is on Ancestry.co.uk and if you would like access I will have to invite you to it.  I have been working on this one for a year and a half and it has become an addiction.

I hope all of this is of use and I look forward to keeping in touch if I find out any more info.

Happy searching.

Ian

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the response and the information.  I believe that George and Sarah had additional children the those you provide, although some are not confirmed.  Most of these have the Tobit middle name.
Here's those I have.
Elizabeth 1862
Emily 1864
George 1868
Robert 1870
Arthur Ernest 1872
William 1873
Agatha Beatrice 1876
Horace 1877
Gertrude Dorothy 1880
Edith Jane 1881
Frank 1883

Both Horace and Frank were killed during WW1 Horace in Belgium and Frank in Ypres, France

From 1873 onwards it appears the family settled down in Leiston, Suffolk as William and the children afterwards were all born there.  The earlier children must have been born close to where George was stationed at the time: Ireland, London, Berkshire.
Based on census information when the family was in England George was born abt 1836 in Hurst(pierpoint?), Sussex although I have yet to connect him with parents.
