I'm trying to find out who Arthur Henry LIND was. He is somehow connected to my family who lived in Sydney between the dates of 1867 and January 1881. I cannot find a death for him in Australia or NZ. Are there any electrol rolls or directories in Sydney that he may appear in? He was a carpenter apparantly. My gr gr gr grandmother was placed in Randwick Institute for the Poor when she was 9 as her father deserted the family. Her mother got her out of Randwick in 1869. My gr .. grandmother named her first born son after this man so I'm assuming he had quite an influence on her.

A brother maybe:
William Andrew Lind was born 1878 and died 19 April 1953. He was buried in Huirangi, Taranaki, New Zealand.
He married Emily Mary Andrews, daughter of John Andrews and Emily Young, in 1909.

The Sydey Sands Directories available to me........
1861, 63,67,69,71,73,79,85 show no LIND with the given name or initials which match.

Thank you for looking. I don't know anything about Arthur Henry LIND other than what I find on the Auckland electorol rolls for the 1890s .. he and his wife Emma disappear around 1896. They both are not on the NZ Deaths list nor in Australia.
William above would be too young. His wife Anna Maria nee Ah Luk/luke/look nee Gunn was born 1838 so I'm assuming Arthur was of an age similar. Strangely I cannot find their marriage either in NZ or Australia - Anna Maria may have just taken his name but on her daughter's marriage cert in NZ she uses the name LIND as a witness and appears under that name in the E.rolls. All I know is that they came to NZ sometime during October 1869 and before January 1881.

You could have a go at searching for their names in the City of Sydney Council Assessment Books. They list all properties in the city liable to pay rates - including names of owners and tennants.
You can find them here (and instructions on how to use them)
http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/AboutSydney/HistoryAndArchives/Archives/ServicesForResearchers/SearchTools.asp
They mainly cover what is now the inner city area. Assessments were only done every few years (every 2 or 3). And they're all divided up into wards - so would help if you had some vague idea about where in Sydney they might have lived. All in excel and you can control+F to search by keyword.
Best of luck - sounds like a toughie!

Please see modified reply #2 on this thread for easier searching of the assessments.

Debra - wow - I didnt know about your customised way of searching the Assessment Books. I'm really impressed and will definately get some benefit out of that!
Mystic - please remember that only the 'head of the household' is listed as the occupier of a property in the Assessment Books. If your Arthur was a young boy or other ancestors were female with husbands - there *may* be someone else listed as the head of the household .

Thank you both for advising me of the Assessment books. Its strange that there are no Chinese names listed in the area. Arthur Lind would have probably been about 30 odd years of age in the 1860s. Unfortunately I can't find the name Lind or Ah Luke in the books. The last address Anna Maria Lind (nee Ah Luk/luke) was living was 115 Lower George Street in the Rocks from 1865-67 definately.

I know I'm replying to an old post, but Arthur Henry Lind was the son of Edmond George Lind (next down on the 1896 ER). Anna Maria is most probably Arthur's mother (but not proven).
They all died in San Mateo, California. Edmond in 1921, Anna in 1931 and Arthur in 1942.

Hello, thank you for replying. Im not sure if Arthur is Anna's son as the census states he was born in Sweden. She was in Australia up until the last quarter of 1867 and returned from San Francisco a year or so later to Australia to collect her daughter Emma.
