Title: historical land search**completed**
Post by: Thamesite2017 on Wednesday 07 July 10 19:47 BST (UK)
Well I've finally taken the plunge and ordered a historical land search/title at Lands information NZ
Ironically not for me, but another researcher without the internet.

I gave the old lot number I had found in electoral rolls and possible new lot numbers.
So fingers crossed..very tempting and easy to do.

My question is that, the staff told me not to worry if they came up with nothing that I should contact the land search agents - as they are experts and would be able to track it. Has anyone used one of these search agents??? they sound expensive!!!
Bye

Same here....I am searching for the location of a farm my GreatGrand parents had for approx 25 years back in the 1880........1905.....what a saga....have eventually located to Archives.govt.nz and each region has its own office....they suugest that you go and visit them with a digital camera to retain images of the info and maps and locations, they are not very keen in you being vague...you have to have some names and locations if possible.  I will let you know how it goes.    I used dunedin@archves.govt.nz

Hi James   ???

Welcome to Rootschat.
If you like to give us the names of your Gt grandparents we might be able to help locate them from directories etc . to make your search at Archives a little easier.

Hi John B

May I also take up your generous offer of assistance with identifying Land Records.

My grandfather first settled on the:

Climie Road, near Cardiff on the Stratford Opunake Road from c1886 until c1910/1915; then

Lower Glen Road, off Surf Highway 45 out of Manaia at Kaupokanui from c1910/15 until 1935.

His brother Eugene Keppel was "At Ngaere off the Opunake Road, four miles out of Stratford around 1883, maybe Section 74 Block 5.

The surname may be spelt Kepple.

Many thanks, and not urgent.

Regards

Kiskeam

By going to the land office in Hamilton I was able to get all the information plus a map of the area.
I was lucky enough to know exactly where the farm was that I was looking for but the Land grant number had changed so we found it by using the name of the the original owner.

Hi Althea and Mackiwi

Many thanks for your most helpful contributions which I shall follow up.

I am  also interested in what is at Wellington Archives which I hope to be able to spend at least a couple of hours at to-morrow, hence my interest also in what John B mentioned.  My visits there are few and far between.

Regards

Pinkie6
How many places have you checked?
all available electoral rolls
Streeet directories? which sometimes allow you to then narrow down house in a block
You then need to look at old maps? look at lot numbers
Then look at the councils maps/googlemaps etc and you can then locate what the current lot numbers are
Then you can online at LINZ request historical search for that property/properties

Land Information need lot numbers to do a search
otherwise there are land search agents who will look on your behald for $$$$$

Not an easy taks..hence why you often hear the frustration here

If the area you are after has BURGESS ROLLS, I have found they often give best description, or the very early rolls do

What time period and where are you looking?

Hi Pinkie6, Many thanks for your supportive e-mail..I have located the physical location of my GreatGrand Fathers and Mothers farm, and had a visit to it a couple of weeks ago..the day was a beautiful day.and I took some wonderful photos.  It was a very special moment of my life to connect with the place of their dreams  and they lives they lead there for over 25 years ,until tragedy struck. It was beautiful farm in West Otago near Dunrobin....their Dreams have come true ..as it is wonderful lush rolling valley next to Spylaw Burn...the present owners are nuturing it well. Will visit the Dunedin archives  and they are able to help me with the location of the site of the original Homesite on the farm.   Thanks again for your help.

sorry no mention of SNOOKs at Patea
for small towns they don't always break down the town into streets

If you are in NZ you wnat to go to a library and see if they have the fiche for the years you want
Good luck
