Hi all. Any information on the above named which belonged to an ancestor of mine, or any pics, stories or photos of any Barkers from the area of Tunstall/Catterick, I think they were there (and are there?) for a long long time, and I would love to know all! If anyone has any information or stories - or headstone pics or anything that can trace geneology back from Hutchinson Barker jnr, senior, and father Joseph, I would be grateful, after all we are relatives! My mother is Doris Barker who married Norman Simmonds in Sydney. I do believe her second cousin Ethel Barker may have met some Barkers over there some years ago (or her son or someone did). Sadly Ethel is no longer here but she did tell me that Hutchinson junior sent his sister Mary away when she concived of an illigetimate child (again called Joseph I believe). I know they all lived in Tunstall and Catterick and had Barker's Farm, and would love pics and further info. Thanks so much.

Hiya jgls and Welcome to Rootschat...can you give some approxiamate years you are researching...there are 7 records for Barker Hutchinson on www.freebmd.org.uk the first is a marriage in 1841...ALL the records are in Richmond Y..I will see if I can find the marriage record on www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk .
a marriage in 1841 and a birth in 1843...are these the father and son you are talking about Hutchinson Snr and Jnr ???...allan :)
BTW you can GOOGLE EARTH the Barkers farm address and see it via satellite can`t you ?? ???

OK I have found them on IGI
Hutchinson Barker christened in Meltonby, Yorkshire 5th May 1811 father Joseph and Mother Anne
Hutchinson Barker married Mary Sayer in Catterick 1841 29th June
Hutchinson Barker jnr was christened 22nd October 1843 in Catterick
Hutchinson Barker jnr married Mary Ann Lofthouse 3rd December 1868 Catterick
then another Hutchinson Barker is married to Dorothy Ann Anderson in 1885 25th June Catterick (possibly a son of Hutchinson / Dorothy or Dorothy died and Hutchinson re-married)
so if you google TITHE SURVEY you should find the land they owned in Catterick...or the land they rented Tithe survey was taken in the 1830`s.......allan :)

In the 1861 the next property besides a cottage next door is Silver Hill;
https://www3.northyorks.gov.uk/n2cabinet_comm/planningregulat_/reports_/20041207_/silverhillfarmt-1/SilverHillFarm,Tunstall.pdf
So the property of Barkers Farm must have been nearby ( see map on site I posted)

Info on a couple of Barkers;
Thomas Barker, Commission Agent
Hutchinson Barker, Farmer
( bottom of page in Tunstall)
This has Barkers Barn on it;

Thanks Trish...so William was the eldest b 1809...so perhaps we should look on IGI for the marriage of Joseph to Ann 1807/8/9 in or around Melsonby/Catterick....allan
OK so there were 3 marriages for Joseph Barker to Ann 1807/8/9 in Yorkshire...2 can be ruled out ...so IF and it is a big IF Joseph Barker married Ann in Yorkshire within those 3 years there are 2 submitted records of this marriage
9th April 1808 Joseph Barker to Ann Hollings at Ledsham, Yorkshire....can someone else check this out and see what they think...the other 2 possibles are ruled out by the christian names of
Hannah
Nanny...they don`t show as Josephs wife on the census return....
I would value someone elses view on this....allan ???

Thanks for that info so kindly provided, guys, i have found and seen most of that. But I'd love to know if Barkers Farm still stands (well, the farmhouse or part thereof) or any gravestones, monuments, etc. I looked on google and found a Barker's Barn Farm but wondered if that was the same one, and yes, near Silver Hill I thought, but being in Oz and not knowing the area, i'm pretty hopeless. I do know there's got to be about a zillion Barkers still there in Tunstall./Catterick and would love to know of any monuments, stories, or ancestors prior to Hutchinson and Joseph, etc.
I will eventually get there, much easier to get there and save on my pension by knwoing where i'm going rather than having to search for it all when I'm there. If anyone is actually IN the Tunstall/Catterick area or knows a Barker..........gotta be one of mine! Isn't this stuff amazing! Also, does anyone know of a really good easy to read historical book on either the Catterick/Tunstall (not the pottery Tunstall) area of Yorkshire or Yorkshire proper? Thank you so very much!

The best thing about putting info on here is that out of the blue someone will see it and contact you ;)
Maybe you should try local newspapers. ( I cant unfortunately help you there as I am in Australia too)
This Society may be worth contacting;

Hopefully someone comes up with more for you in the future.
Trish :)

I have Hutchinson's in my tree who owned land in Tunstall and Catterick . Francis Wilks left his entire estate to his nephew Thomas Naylor from Leeds in 1715 . Then Thomas Naylor left land in Catterick / Tunstall to his great grandson Thomas Hutchinson .
The Hutchinson's I have seem to have connections to Hipswell Lodge / Manor .
I am wondering whether your Hutchinson line maybe in connection with mine :)
