We have just returned home after holiday in New forest area, we stayed at The shoe Inn at plaitford and was gobsmaked to see old photos and a post card addressed to Mrs Callaway southampton, our cousin who was with us named Callaway and had relatives in that street( cant remember name at the moment) can anyone shed any light on this? or any info on the Shoe Inn and the relevance to the post card???? think it was signed Nellie :-*

Did the people who run the pub have any more information?
You don't mention a date for the postcard.
If it is prior to 1911 you should be able to find who was living at the pub and CALLAWAYs who were living in Southampton. If the familes were related you might find something on freeBMD but it may be they were just friends. Did the back of the postcard give any clues?
After 1911 street directories might help. Southampton street directories are available online

Landady has only been at the pub for 8 months, think the date was c1931 and only showed the message as it was in a frame with other photos, I have found the 1901 census but no mention of callaway??? as it isnt my side of the family (cousins) I am a bit lost, I know a bit of history of the shoe dates back to 14th century I have spent all morning on this already!

Street directories will only give the head of household so no help in finding Nellie.
The 1936 directory shows 3 CALLAWAYS in Southampton, all called Richard, living at 19 Kingsland Place, 79 Marland Place and Carlton Crescent
Ooops! :-[ That was 1836
There were several CALLAWAYs and one CALLOWAY in 1931

Timothy CALLAWAY married December quarter of 1904, Southampton - possible bride Nellie RENDLE.
Not sure it helps really. :-\

The Shoe Inn has a website http://www.theshoeinn.co.uk/
Perhaps they could copy the postcard for you?
Bob.

The Hampshire CALM database lists a will for Arabella PECK of The Shoe Inn, Plaitford dated 1934.

The PECKS were at The Shoe Inn in 1901.

Perhaps Nellie stayed at The Shoe Inn and sent a postcard home.
