I did find my grandmother Edith Hassell on the 1911 census Cheshire, she was a cook/domestick a Parkside House.
On 18 Sept. 1912 she and her presumed husband a George Pearce left England for Canada. They are shown as Mr. and Mrs. George and Edith Pearce.
Sometime between the census date and Sept. 1912 they appear as a couple.
George is shown as the father on my father's Canadian birth certificate.
George them disappears from the family, and is never mention to anyone.
I have not been able to find a marriage entry for them, nor any information on George who is shown as being born in Oxford on the birth certificate.
My question is:
Did you have to provide proof of identity and marriage to book a ships passage, and if so is it available to search?

It just occurred to me that the employment records for the County Lunatic Asylum might still be available, if so where might I find them
Sometime between the census date 2 April 1911 and the departure to Canada 18 December 1912 George Pearce and Edith May Hassall got together.
My Dad's birthdate was 18 Jan. 1913, however it was always celebrated on the 18 April. This leads me to believe that this was a "shot-gun" wedding.
Edith is listed as Edith Hassett on the 1911 census an worked as a cook/domestic for Dr. Sheldon the medical superintendant.
All help appreciated.

Hi
Sorry - but I can't understand how their employment records would solve your query?
Would it not be easier to get a copy of their marriage cert and compare the date of marriage to the date of birth on your fathers birth cert?
EDIT
Edith Mary Hassall married Charles W J Culley in 1912 in Congleton but there is no marriage listed for an Edith May Hassall to a George Pearce and no birth in 1913 for a male Pearce with mothers maiden name Hassall
Births September qtr 1887
Edith May Hassall Congleton 8a 311

Hi, Archworth, to which asylum are you referring, the one at Chester or the one at Macclesfield? The Cheshire Record/Archives and Local studies office holds a great many of these records. Have a look at their catalogue at the link below:
http://archive.cheshire.gov.uk/dserve/DServe.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Index.tcl
I was in the office today and was looking at the holdings of the County Asylum at Chester and there are records of staff. The catalogue may help identify whether the person you are looking for might be mentioned.
You need to note that some records are held under the 100 year rule. You could phone the office, the staff are very helpful the phone number and contact details are on the home page of the site.

Thank you for your reply..
.this is not my Edith Hassall...mine born 24 May 1884 Broseley Shropshire... and was found in the 1911 census at the county Asylum Parkside in Cheshire... ( Edith Hassatt) she was a cook/domestic working for a Dr. Sheldon head of the asylum.
Between 2 April 1911 and 18 December 1912 when she left England she met, possibly married, George Pearce became pregnant and moved to Canada.
If I found when Edith left Parkside House the records might show why she left and where she was going.
As mentioned earlier I have not found a marriage entry for her and George Pearce... the only mention of George is the passenger list and my father's Canadian birth certificate.
Any and all records of George Pearce were removed from the family files by Edith.
thanks again.

Have you posted a query on the Canada board? There are very helpful people there who can access their incoming papers on ancestry.ca or ancestry.com.
Have you found a suitable George Pearce [occupation from birth certificate compared to census entry] on the 1911 census?
There is a George Pearce aged 16 born Oxford living at Yorktown Frimley Surrey on the 1901 RG13 piece 609 fol 9 p 9 carpenter apprentice.

Hi, archworth. The Cheshire Local Studies and Archives had records for the Nurses and Servants from 1871 to 1946. Unfortunatley these do not contain records of the servants of Dr Sheldon. They are servants of the asylum. I presume that Edith was privately employed by Dr Sheldon as she is not in any of the two books covering the above period that I consulted.
Sorry it wasn't of any help.
