Title: Gibson and Miller Family - Edrom Parish
Post by: MBarry on Tuesday 06 July 10 06:52 BST (UK)
Hello all. I live in America and am new to posting on this site, but I am hoping someone more experienced can help solve a mystery or at least suggest new records for me consult.

My GGG-Grandparents, John GIBSON and Elizabeth MILLER were married on 08 April 1831 in Edrom Parish, Berwick(shire) by the Rev. M. Ralston, minister of the Relief Congregation Dunse. [I located their marriage entry located on the site  ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk ]

I would like to find out who their parents are but am having difficulty due to it being before the law in Scotland required them to officially be registered. One article here in America made mention of John's father being "David Gibson" of Scotland but didn't list his mother's name.

I did notice on same site above that there is a "Anderson Gibson" born in Edrom Parish on 27 Sept 1818 and baptised the following month. Interesting enough, his parents listd as "David GIBSOn and Isabella RENTON."

Any suggestions how I can tell if this are same parents of my GGG-Grandfather?

Hi,
Did the parish marriage bann/marriage entry say what his occupation was, who their witnesses were and if they were 'of the county? Not that the latter meant that they had been born there.
Do you know what children they had as I can't find any with mother, Elizabeth Miller?  Do you know if Elizabeth was born in Edrom/area?
Anything like this could help.
I have found Anderson Gibson with parents David and Isabella in the 1841 census for Berwick on Tweed with William 20, Thomas 12; all children born Scotland. No sign of a John Gibson born to that family.

Hi

Doing an IGI search with parents David Gibson and mother Isabella produces four baptisms at the Golden Square Presbyterian or Scotch Church, for:
John Gibson in 1807 ,Alison Gibson in 1809, David Gibson 1811 and Robert Gibson 1815.

As is common in churches in England, the mother's surname is not given, but it looks highly likely that John 1807 is your ggg grandfather.

If you search on Scotlandspeople statutory deaths, entering 'Elizabeth Gibson' and maiden surname Miller, between 1855 and 1875, one match is found. (Sorry, I don't have any Scotlandspeople credits at the moment.) You will be able to see Elizabeth's death certificate, and statutory death certificates in Scotland give the names of the parents of the deceased, including the mother's maiden name.
I can't find a match for a death of John Gibson with mother's surname Renton, but that either means he died before 1855, or he died in England.

regards,
Lesley

I think we have made contact via another topic, Gibsons of Coldingham.
Only found your query today and I have a death Certificate for DAVID GIBSON dated 1861 March 20th at Burnhall Parish of Coldingham, widower of Isabella Renton, and a farmer.

One of my middle names is GIBSON from my Maternal Grandmother's maiden name and I also know that My Gr Grand father JOHN Gibson was brought up at Burnhall.

On the Death Cert, The parents are given as David Gibson (farmer) & Alice Gibson (m.s. Tait) and it was registered by William, son, of Burnhall.

I have just spotted this conversation , and am taking great interest because all the Gibson's from Coldingham mentioned here are related to me ( through my mother ).  I have several cousins from different brothers at grandfather level doing work on the same group of families, so it would be interesting to make contact and compare notes with each other.

Gary

This note is specifically to John who notes that his ggrandfather was John of Burnhall.  Depending on which John is your gr grandfather, he would have been either a brother or cousin of my direct line.

Thanks for directing me to discussion, Gary.  I have perhaps only been focusing on the 3 younger sons and forgetting about the 4 elder children (one being John b. 1807) because they already had left home by the 1841 Census.  I am going to do a little more research in that regard.   ::)

Happy New Year to All

I am still trying to work out which part of the Gibson family you are descended from.
I am guessing either Robert Anderson (1856) or Thomas (1863)

I have started again on the Gibson's in Berwick-shire, around the end of 19th century and 1901 census in Berwick-0n-Tweed, but they keep moving from Scotland to England, and is time consuming jumping between the different records.

Thomas was married to Mathieson Nelson, and is the brother of my Great Grandfather JOHN ALEXANDER GIBSON b 26 August 1850 and married to Mary Hopper

Can you send some details as all I have is the 4 brothers, Anderson b 1889 , George, Thomas b 1894   & John b 1897

I'm thinking that John Alexander Gibson is not the brother of Thomas, but the cousin of Thomas. John Alexander is the son of William who worked the Burnhall farm with Anderson.  Both families resided on the farm. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone...

that would be my finding as well from census papers where the two were farmers on same farm at same time and had many children of same or similar names.

so where does this John Gibson and Elizabeth Miller marriage fit into the Gibson's (Anderson & William) who farmed at Burnhall in Coldingham in 1861 and 1871 census?
I have also traced a James GIBSON & Elizabeth  at Heaghhead in the 1841 census, could they be the same couple, with Robert age 9, Mary 6, Margaret 4 & Isabella 1?

I cannot think that there were only two brothers in and around 1820, although I have a Thomas born in about 1829, all sons of DAVID GIBSON & ISABELLA RENTON.

I have a print from the O.P.R. marriages ref 738/00 0030 0196 Edrom, but the first entry on that page is for a  James Gibson, hind Greenknowes and Beatrice Haig of Bunkle and their marriage ion 4th June 1830.
I think I can trace this family in the 1851 census, still in Bunkle and Preston with children
Joseph age 12, James 9, Margaret 6, Robert 4 and William 1
I will try and get hold of the 1861 census again for Bunkle & Preston and check.

any help would be useful, even if this data is incorrect, it eliminates some possibilities.

James Gibson and Beatrice Haig are my gg grandparents.  Know a bit  more about the Haigs but haven't (yet) got around to doing too much on the Gibson side so I probably won't be much help at the moment but willing to share what I do find.

I cannot fit a James Gibson into my tree as I have only got 7 siblings of
David Gibson and Isabella Renton.

they are John    1807
Alison                1809
David                1811
Robert              1815
Anderson         1818
William             1821
Thomas            1829

Could James be one born between William & Thomas or at some other time?

I am fascinated

I don't believe there is a James in this line from David. None of the research I've done shows there to be one - just the 7 names you have listed already.

There is a James Alexander b 1853 Anderson and Margaret and he is the only James I know of.

Yes, I have James A Gibson born to Anderson Gibson 27/9/1818 to 14 9 1892) & Margaret Symington (1821-1890).
Anderson farmed at Burnhall near Coldingham in Berwickshire in partnership with his brother William (1821 to 1892?)
William was married to Rachel Falconer (1827 to 1864) and are my gg grand parents.

Anderson and Margaret had
David                1847
Elizabeth           1849
Isabella             1850
James A             1852
Alison                1855
Anderson           1856
William               1858
John                   1861 to 1935
Thomas              1862 to 1905
George             1868
Robert              1871

I am having my doubts that James Gibson & Beatrice Haig have any connection with this family and my family , but prove me wrong!

There are Gibsons interred at Edrom. I was there recently and I recall seeing  it because they had a son that served with the Royal Garrison Artillery in WW1 that was killed in action. There was a vase of fresh flowers upon the grave, so someone attends too it.

I know this is an old thread but I have a brick wall to get around. I have been looking for links between the Trotter and Gibson families.  My 2x Great Grandmother was Isabella Trotter (Her mother was  born in Edrom) and she  named her Daughter Matilda Gibson  Key born 1887. This always puzzled us as we knew of no connection in the Key family so we thought it must be a Trotter connection.
So was interested to read this thread as I think there probably was a connection even if illegitimate.
