Title: Great Granddads burial
Post by: margnip2 on Monday 05 July 10 22:51 BST (UK)
Hi, I hope someone can help me on this one.

My G Granddad Patrick Flynn died 4th Feb 1940 at 19 Upper Northbrook Avenue age on his death cert is 68yrs.  My mother, aunty and uncle all say he was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.  Last year we went and enquired at the office but they said they had no record of him.  His wife Kate Flynn died 22nd March 1940 and I have her record of burial (no death Cert) from Glasnevin.  Her address on this record is 19 Upper Northbrook Avenue, and we have visited her grave which is unmarked.  She is buried with her daughter Martha Donlon.

As I said above my mother, aunty and uncle say that Patrick was buried in Glasnevin.  So why is there no record of him.  If he had been buried somewhere else would anyone know where.  If his was a paupers burial would it still be recorded?  Or did he slip under the paperwork?

Can anyone help, I will be in Dublin next Monday and it would be nice to have a few clues to work with.  Saying that I will be in Cork from this Thursday with no internet access!

I can see that you have your ggrand fathers death cert, but i can't find him listed in the death index for that year. The nearest match is in 1944 and he was aged 67.

Does patricks death cert state that he died at Northbrook? or was he in an institution?

I see that he was living with other family members just prior to his death - have you confirmed with them?  I have a Patrick Flynn in my family and found him on the the Census as Flinn!! so an openmind is needed on spelling

PS - i see from the Census of 1911 that Patrick was from Longford - long shot, but was he taken home?

Thanks for all your comments.  Genemaster thanks for your help but that is not my Patrick Flynn, he was living at Upper Northbrook Avenue when he died and his wife Kate died weeks later.

Anne not at the moment, but that site is very good and will look into it, but will be to late for this visit.

Marc, his death cert does say he was living at 19 Northbrook.  The other people on the electoral roll were his family.  Kate was his wife, the other Flynns were his children and Daniel Sweeny became his son in law.  the Patrick you found on the census is not my Patrick.  In 1911 he and his family were living in Loughrea Galway.  They did not move to Dublin until about 1912 and lived in Clarks Cottages, then they moved to the Lock Keepers Cottage near Nth Strand and when he retiered to Northbrook.  It also says on his census records that he was from Cavan.

Maybe the records at Glasnevin have misspelt his name and is worth asking when we go.  I only have Patricks grand children to ask including my mother and like I said they all say he was buried in Glasnevin.  My Aunty would have been about 16yrs old when he died and she is the eldest, and my mum about 13yrs.

I have been told by the people at Glasnevin that the plots belonged to Patricks youngest son Vincent.  But he died in 1990 in Scotland, I have been in touch with his daughter but she was brought up in Scotland  and knows little about the family.

Hi,

I had a quick look at the Glasnevin Cemetry website  http://www.glasnevintrust.ie  and they have a Kate Flynn who died in 1940 (age 55). There is a tick beside the record which means that there are more than herself in the grave. You can pay online for the grave record and it if you opt for the Extended option it will give you details of all in there keeping her company :)

Thanks for your help Denise, but I already have Kate Flynns plot.  You got the right Kate and she is buried with her daughter Martha Donlon.

I have the exact same problem as you Margnip. My GG Grandfather died in 1937, his family is adament he was buried in Glasnevin... his wife (who died in 1927) and his kids are there but not him.

Why would he not get buried with his wife.... Glasnevin state he is not there eventhough I have checked most of the other Graveyards in Dublin for him.

It might be worth looking at the Irish/Dublin newspapers around the time of his death - m,aybe there was a notice.

I think the following would have been around in 1940 ...

Irish Times
Irish Press
Irish Independent
(Dublin) Evening Mail
(Dublin?) Evening Herald

probably in the National Library, or Pearse St Library Research Room

I'm assuming it's Northbrook in East Wall area, not Ranelagh?
Church is probably St Joseph's, East Wall, though it didn't become a parish till 1941. prior to that the parish was St Laurence O'Toole, Seville place

Thanks for that shanew147.  Unfortunatly I did not get time to do what I hoped.  Did get to Glasnevin and although the receptionist was very helpful the computer still said no.  That was the receptionist in the museum part.  she did suggest that I email, so with extra bit of information I will try that.  Sorry meant to say that is my Great Granddad.
