Hi everyone!
I'm trying to trace my great grandfather from Dundee, Scotland. His name is John Drummond Mudie. On my grandmother's, Teresa Mary Mudie, birthcert is states that an address of 2 Peter Streer & his occupation was a Jute Preparer (im guessing it was in the Jute Factory in Dundee). My grandmother was born in 1937 in Dundee.
I have no other info for him so if anyone would have any ideas where i could start to look i'd appreciate it as i've found loads of info for my great grandmother.
Thanks!
Lydia

Hiya Lydia...you have my sympathy...go to www.familysearch.org there are a large amount of John Mudie born in Dundee...you will have to trawl through them all to see if your John is on that site.......I presumed b about 1910 to 1915 but he could have been born well before that....they go back to John Mudie b 1650 in Dundee....it`s a huge research job...good luck....allan :)

forgot to mention his address:
100 Caldram St.
1871; an apprentice blacksmith
He's also there in 1881 & 1891 living at 104 Caldram st.
All I can tell you about Drummonds marriage to Jane is that it took place in 1876 but not in Dundee.
-
wow thanks so much!! i've somethin to go on now... really appreciate it, thanks again!! ;D
-
Reading your original post you say your grandmother was born 1937.The John Mudie I gave you would have been 53 at the time, although it's possible he's her father it's more likely he's her grandfather ie.the John Drummond Mudie you're looking for being his son.
jim
edit:Found a birth for John Drummond Mudie 1915 Dundee so it looks like this is the case. There's also his marriage in 1935 Dundee.
You need to get his birth cert. & then look for his parents marriage & hopefully that will state Drummond as his father. You can then get Drummond's 1876 marriage to find his as he was born 2 years before Civil Registration started.
Hopefully this will give you your family going back to your 4 x Greatgrandfather.
hope this helps.
-
thanks so much jim... i reckon thats definately the right family.
Is there any other info for the John Drummond Mudie birth in 1915 or for the marriage in 1935 i.e wife's name?
On my grandmother's birthcert it gives his address as 2 Peter Street.
Thanks again jim!
-
The info. came from Scotlands People but as you know if you want the index no. you will have to pay.As you have your Grandmothers birth cert. you already know her name.
It costs £6.00 for 30 credits & the info. costs 1 credit.I believe the certs. are £10.00 ea.

on my grandmother's birth cert is states that her mother Winifred Wynne was married to Michael McCormack in 1931 Dundee, i have a copy of this marriage cert.
so it would seem both her & Mudie were married to other people when my grandmother was born!!! interesting!!!
I'll get John Mudie's birth cert & go from there!
Thanks jim!!
-
The marriage for John Drummond Mudie I found doesn't say he was married to either of these names.Does it say on her birth cert. her mother is Winifred Mudie nee McCormack nee Wynne?
jim
Edit:
By elimination I've discovered this John Drummond Mudie married an Isabella ? at St.Andrews Dundee 1935.There are no others of this name listed anywhere.
I think you need his marriage cert.
-
on the birth cert it says her mother is Winifred Wynne or McCormack, married to Michael McCormack in 1931 Dundee.
I'll get a copy of Mudie's marrriage cert.
-
according to SP the mothers married name appears first followed by her maiden name also her date of marriage.
It looks like they were with their respective spouses at the time.
There's 1 Isabella Mudie death 1935-7 but she was 70.It's getting a bit complicated & I'd tread carefully, you don't know where this is going to lead.
Let us know how you get on.
jim
-
thanks for that jim... from the info I already had i expected nothing but complicated!!
i'll let u know what I find when I receive the cert copies.
thanks again for all your help!

Hello Lydia
Well he was a busy boy,so they never married & John may not have been aware that Isabella had divorced him as she didn't know his address.
I have John Simpson Mudie's service papers such as they are, also his medal card.I can't show them as they are copyrighted to Ancestry.
He was discharged as medically unfit late 1916.
I've sent you a pm.
I was drawn to his middle name (Simpson) & wondered if it was Drummond's mother's maiden name as often happened & found this:
George Mudie = Barbara Simson ( no P ) m. 9/9/1847 Dundee,I know I'm getting a bit in front of this but couldn't resist having a look.
What you need now is his birth cert. to establish his father is Drummond & Drummond's 1876 marriage to find his father, hopefully George.

oh i know i was just gettin confused. the penny only dropped later on when i thought about it. cos i was tryin to see if people on here could get any record of him later on in life in the records tis all. just helpin out ya know! xx
-
yes the 1901 John 16 is our great great grandfather... his son born 1915 is our grandfather!! i havent looked for his death cert???!!!
-
ok people im back to Mudie! got side tracked with the Wynnes!
So Im not sure that the Mudie family on 1901 census as previously thought above, is the right family, although similar address
John Drummond's parents:
John Simpson Mudie b. 1892 Parents John Simpson Mudie b 1862, died 1930 Dundee & Margaret Gillespie Croal b1862... married 01/02/1884 Dundee.
Wilhelmina Robertson Drummond b 1897 Dundee, parents John Drummond b1859 & Susan Cryan Milligan b1857... they married 24/06/1878 Dundee.
Think I have them now in 1901 @ 104 Caldram Street(same address as other family?)
John mudie 39
Margaret Mudie 39
Marjory 16
John 9
Jane A 5
William 4
John Simpson's (b1862) parents are George Mudie & Barbara Simpson b.1829 as jim had suggested previously. George Mudie b 1820 Leith, died 1869.
-
forgot to add that i still cannot find a death cert for John Drummond Mudie in the UK, im assuming he emigrated after my grandmother was born in 1937....have searched passenger lists and found:
John Moody b 1915 departed 1938 from Liverpool to Hong Kong.
It maybe him i'll have to look further into this.

Finally found what became of John Drummond Mudie!
He fought in the Spanish Civil War from March 1937 & was killed in Caspe 17/03/1938. His name is on the memorial plaque that contains the names of all 16 volunteers from Dundee who died during the Spanish Civil War.

Judging by one of his trees on Ancestry he had one marriage but four different "families".
