Hello!
I am looking up for information about my great uncle. His name was Geoffrey Walter Wood.
So far I know he was born in Argentina in 1911 (although in a british family). He lived in Estancia Huechahue, in the Neuquen province in Patagonia. He never married, and had no children as far as I know.
I also know he became a Volunteer Reserve RAF 97th squadron and was awarded a DFM -service number 1810692. He died on a landing accident along with the rest of his crew at the Bourne airfield on February 21st, 1944. He is buried at the Cambridge City Cemetery.
However, I don't know much more about him. My grandfather didn't talk much about him- or anything related to the war for that matter. I'd like to know more. There is something about his life, and the motives behind the choices he made that startle me. And I'd like to start a little art project called "300 yards" around him. But for that, I'd like to know more.
Anyone out there with some information? Any one with any hints on how I could know more about him.
Thanks.

Hi DADW
Have you seen this page about the crash?

Hi, Dazey!
Yes, I have ran into that one. I also found him listed at the CWGC website, in a list of the people from argentina that volunteered for the RAF during the war, and in the website of the 97th squadron association where a photo along with his 1943 crew is shown.
Apart from that, he's a complete mistery. ;)

Do you have his visit to UK with parents in 1920 ?

Hi, Shaun!
No, I don't have that one. Where did you find that?

It's on the inbound passenger lists viewable on Ancestry.

- has a Geoffrey Wood heading from the UK to Argentina in 1928 of about the right age. (seems to be travelling by himself? Full details would show that)

- I'd suggest asking for copies of his service records.
I presume you've contacted the 97th Squadron association? If not, you should; they may be able to suggest other sources or even put you in contact with someone who may have known him.

Are you still researching the Wood line in Argentina? My family connection is with James Wood who inherited Huechahue so I guess a nephew of Geoffrey Wood.

Hi, Oscella!
Yes, I'm still lookin into the Wood family in Patagonia.
We must be related somehow, as James was my Grand Father. He was Geoffrey's brother.
Any leads you can suggest are more than welcome.

I can't really add to Geoffrey's exploits but your timing is rather unfortunate as I just took all that I could find out to the printer a few weeks ago! Better late than never
Hope to hear soon
