Hello
I am new at researching my family tree & Rootschat so hope you can help? I have a pictrue of my Great Gran Annie Morris, born 1880, the one in the blue dress. Through research, I have obtained a picture of her as a young girl and one perhaps older, they grey photo...Can anyone tell me firstly if they are the same person, and if so, what year the pics may have been taken? If it helps date she married in 1910 and died 1919.
Also if anyone can tidy up the old grey one, then that is fine by me : )
Also, is anyone knowledgeable on hairstyles and advise if her hair was a "style" of that time? it looks a bit odd to me (sorry great Gran! haha).
Many thanks in advance :)

Sorry, the pic I have of her in the blue dress did not down load...here it is
-
I am sure they are all the same lady, she is lovely...the hair does look unusual... will have a closer look.

Thank you. :)
It is weird how my Nan had the blue dress photo and her Brother had the crinkled grey photo, yet both didn't know they had them, I have uncovered this by asking around years on after they have died...
I would love to know how old she was in each pic if possible as she died aged 38 in 1919 sadly ...
Thanks again

Picture 2 1889-93.This bodice style with the raised shoulder called a kickup was a short lived style between these dates. She looks early 20's.
Picture 1 looks early 1900's but there's not much to see,she looks early to mid 20's.
Picture 3 I can't quite make out what she's wearing but I would say around WW1.
It would help if we could see what cardstock these are on & if there's anything on the back.

Hi jim
I often see replies here dating pictures by dress styles, but how accurate is it? Would women in the north of England be as up to date as the women in London say, and would women have worn out of style dresses because they couldn't afford new ones - or would they not have bought 'fashionable' dresses in the first place?
I'm not crticising your expertise :D - just curious to know how much research has actually been done.
Keep up the good work

Hello again : )
I am afraid I only have the original picture of the one in the blue dress...on the back written in scruffy cursive writing in pencil is "dress light blue, beads white, complexion fresh"....The picture has been cut to fit in an old frame so it shows nothing else. The material is quite stiff like card....does this help?
If the young picture is c. 1889 - 1893 it would suggest she was 9 - 13years old ....so wondering if Linda's theory is possible in that she was wearing an old dress (she was from a poor family)? I would think she was maybe a tad older?
Also, would you say all three pics are def. the same lady? (I hope they are).
Thanks again, I really appreciate your help and expertise : )

If picture 3 is on stiff card then it's a cabinet card rather than a postcard so I doubt later than WW1 & probably at the earlier end.
Picture 2 shows a young woman with a modern short hairstyle worn by fashionable women in the 90's.The heavily embroidered bodice in the Oriental style indicates a quite expensive garment unless she was a dressmaker & made it herself.
Women all over the Empire wore the latest fashions within a few months of introduction thanks to fashion periodicals which were much sought after by all classes of women, even those on the lower social scale could at least alter a dress to look modern.
Having a photo taken was considered an occasion & Sunday best would have been worn & would have been that which was in fashion at the time.
Outfits at this time were made rather than bought, although "store bought" dresses were emerging as an alternative this was more a 20th.C trend as was one piece outfits.
A woman of substance would use one of the upmarket dressmakers/milliners & shown the latest fashions & materials,a woman of the mainly middle classes would use local dressmakers & take along a picture of what she wanted,a woman of the lower classes would make her own from pattern books or alter what she had.
In my view picture 2 looks completely different from the other 2, eyes, mouth & chin aren't the same.

If I can beg to differ Jim, :) I think they are all the same lady.
The eyes have it!
-
Can't really see any similarities. The other 2 appear to have naturally curly hair ( as there wasn't a style like this that I'm aware of) whereas the woman in picture 2 has a full head of straight hair.
We'll see what others think.

I think they are different women. The face is fuller in ther first and the chin looks more square in the second. maybe related though.................then again I am no good at this so who knows ;D

The mouth does it for me,the 1st. small with a full bottom lip.2nd. wider with a thin bottom lip.also she would have about 10 when the 2nd. was taken.

Jim has my vote ;D

My Mum said the young girl is spitting image of Annie's Son when he was a young lad - but maybe that is just wishful thinking coz we want it to be her?? : )
-
Have to agree that the young woman (pic 2) is a different person, and felt this after only viewing the photos. The woman in the 2nd photo has a much wider mouth; this is not something that changes. There is some resemblance in the eyes/brow, and the nose is difficult to gauge resemblance because of different perspectives.

Thanks Nick - I am a tad deflated but I need to know opinions as I suppose it is easy to get carried away : /
-
I too think number two is a different lady, and thought this straight away, before reading other opinions...she has a totally different face shape to the others (numbers 1 and 3 I believe are definitely the same lady), the hair is a different texture and apparently a different colour, and as the first two pictures would have been taken quite close together in date, I can't see that the differences can be attributed to a difference in time.
What beautiful ladies they both are, though :)
Cheers

thank you Prue - once again I apprciate your comments and opinions : )
-
I agree with the differences of pic 2 compared to pics 1 and 3 ... there is definitely a strong likeness to your great gran though, so hope you are able to find out where she fits in the family :) mare
-
I agree, number 2 is not the same woman as number 1 and number 3.
-
I agree too, number 2 has a much wider mouth and her eyebrows are a different shape, her hair is a different colour too isn't it? Its a bit odd cause to me number 1 looks older than number 3 but number 3's clothes are more recent.
