I'm looking to locate the names of the parents of James McCready b. Abt 1800, Probably in the Barrhead/Neilston area as all the subsequent members of the family seemed to be born in the area.
This James McCready married Stewart Scott b.30 March 1806(Greenock). Worryingly, The date I have for the marriage is 30 March 1819????
Any help I can get from you lovely people would be greatly appreciated.
FMJ
EDIT- I didn't know whether I was allowed to post it or not, but i have a copy of the register for the marriage and also for Stewart Scott's birth if that helps anyone?

Hi
Your problem appears to be that Stewart (Scott) McCready is probably already a widow in both 1841 and 1851 Census
1841 Census for Grahamston Village in Neilston Renfrewshire
Stewart MCREADY c. 40 Bleacher born Renfrewshire FEMALE
James MCREADY c. 20 Calico Printer Apprentice born Renfrewshire
Catherine MCREADY 16 Bleacher born outside Census County
Jean MCREADY 14 Bleacher born Renfrewshire
John MCREADY 12 Tearer To Calico Printer born Renfrewshire
Catherine BURNS c. 70 born Renfrewshire
Son James is married to an Agnes in the 1851 Census
1851 Census Gateside, Neilston
James McReady 31 Head Calico Printer
Agnes McReady 33 wife born Campbelltown, Argyll
Stewart McReady 7 daughter born Paisley, Renfrew
Peter McReady 5 son born Campbelltown, Argyll
James McReady 3 son born Paisley, Renfrew
John McReady 1 son born Barrhead, Renfrew

Thanks for your help Jake. I don't know if there's been a mess up in dates as according to the census, that would mean Stewart was born in 1801 but according to her birth certificate she was born in 1806. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh70/FullMentalJaikie/StewartScottBirthCertificate.jpg
-
according to IGI
Stewart Scott was born 30th March 1806
parents
Alexander Scott and Elizabeth Allison
Elaine
ADDED
there is another Stewart Scot female born 1798 in Orkney
-
done a general search on SP the Stewart Scott born 1798 in Orkney
is still in Orkney on the 1841 census with second person James (but its not James McCready)
there is only a submitted marriage entry on IGI for that one, to a James Holmes
searched
McReady Stewart female second person James aged 20-40 only one result and it is the one
that DDJJake has found
-
So if you were to put money on it, would the one with the birth certificate for 1806 be the one i'm looking for, and if so, why would there be such a discrepancy in the two dates?
-
In these old parish records, it is quite easy for a 0 to be transcribed as a 6, and vice versa!
Anyway going by the 1841 Census age of Stewart as at least 40, she was born between April 1796 and April 1801 ... all ages rounded down to nearer 0 or 5 in Scottish 1841 Census for adults.

Nice to see they kept such accurate records ;D
Thanks very much for all your help,

FMJ - it is possible your ancestor was born 1801 and not baptised until 1806 - reason being I am transcribing the OPRs for the Contin area and seeing this a lot.
One record I have is 6 children all being bapt on the same day - no children names dates etc - mjust say 6 children from ????? baptised this day

I already knew one of the McCready's, Dugald, died in the first world war. But whilst researching the matter, I also found a Peter and a Daniel McCready also died in the same war. Now Dugald had brothers by those names. How could I find out if they were from the same family?

I am not too sure which thread your last comment relates to but war dead records can be seen on the site for the commonwealth graves commission.
There is one Dugald McCready but there is no information on him. There is one Peter and a couple of Daniel's on the site; but I do not think there are any McCready's on the war memorial in barrhead.
-
I didn't want to start anotherthread about the same family that's all. As regards the Barrhead war memorial, there are 3 McCready's on it. Dugald, there's a Peter and my memory escapes me as regards who the other one was.
I just thought maybe the Barrhead library or something would be able to shine some light on the subject?
-
Ah apologies - they are on the bottom part of the stone -you could try emailing barrhead library - either last year or the year before they had a display about the great war. I can't recall if it listed all the war dead of Barrhead, but there was definitely a display. I think the display had been pulled together by the historian based at Giffnock.
Failing that, I will try and go through the fiche at the library but it may be some weeks before I am back over there.
-
I'm going to take a wander up there next week at some point, I only live through in Erskine anyhoo, and hopefully also find out what Barrs Well is while I'm at it.

Have you got this 1901 census entry:
Peter Mccready 54, fireman b. Campbelltown, Argyllshire
Mary Mccready 44
Alexander Mccready 20
Nellie Mccready 19
John Mccready 16
Agnes Mccready 13
Daniel Mccready 10
Peter Mccready 8
Dugald Mccready 6
Walter Mccready 6
Address: 47 Graham Street, Neilston
From the Barrhead War Memorial, you have the names of Peter, Dougald and Walter http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~miningvillages/barrhead.html and also www.barrhead-scotland.com/Resources/admin/server_table_data/GenericList.asp?START=221
From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, you have:

Hi Monica, thanks very much for the links, they've helped enormously.
I found Two Daniel McCready's, born within two years of each other in SP, both listed as born in Gateside, Neilston, So I just need to figure out if the Daniel in My family is the one who died in the War. He is listed in the same regiment as Dugald and Peter, But it appears he signed up in Dingwall, Ross-Shire?
-
I did see the location but, perhaps, I thought this might have been where he was living at the time whe he enlisted. Has to be a reason why his name was included on the Barrhead WW1 Memorial. Tried to check for service papers for the three but couldn't easily see any unfortunately.
Perhaps as Murphyz suggested, the library might have more personal details on the men listed on the memorial?

That's exactly what I'll do nextday I'm off, thanks again forallyour advice,

Hi there, me again - I have been over to the library today and the exhibition/display is not stored at Barrhead and has been taken back to Giffnock, so double check with Barrhead library if you are heading over to especially to see it.
I have been through the microfiche for the Barrhead News and I am not sure if this will help any but I have noted what I could see re McCready - sometimes it is shown as McCreadie and McCready within the newspaper.
I am not sure what the(92) referred to in the first extract. I will need to go back and double check the 27 April 1917 edition at some point - the commonwealth war graves has 19 Sept 1916, I have written 16th in my notes.
Barrhead News 18 June 1915
Included in the section “The War”
“Mrs McCready, 41 Graham Street, Barrhead received official intimation on Monday that her son Pte Peter McCready (92), of the 1st A&S.H. was killed in action in France on the 2nd June. Pte McCready was 23 years of age and had been in the regular army for about four years. He was in India when the war began and was transported to France in December. In a letter to Mrs McCready a comrade in the trenches says that Pte McCready had been on orderly duty and had taken a message to headquarters. He was on his way back and was within a few yards of the trench when he was shot by a sniper. The writer of the letter adds; - “He was always a cheery chap and will be missed by all the section who send their deepest sympathy to his friends.” Mrs McCready’s loss acquires additional sadness from the fact that another son was killed in a colliery accident in England in February. Two other brothers are also under training in the army.”
Barrhead News 19 November 1915
“Official notice has been received that Private Andrew McCreadie, 15th Divisional Cyclist Coy. has been admitted to an hospital in France suffering from a gunshot wound in the face. Pte. McCreadie resided at 133 Cross Arthurlie Street.”
Barrhead News 27 April 1917
“Private Daniel McCready
Mrs Janet McCready, Gateside, Barrhead received word some time ago that her son, Pte. Daniel McCready, Canadian Forces, was reported missing on 16th September last. This has now been followed by an official intimation that he was killed on that date. Four years ago Private McCready, who had been employed with Messers Shanks and Co Limited, left Barrhead for Canada and at the outbreak of war he joined the Canadian Force. Mrs McCreadie has another son who is at present with troops in Mesopotamia.”
Barrhead News 25 May 1917
“Private Dugald McCready
Intimation has been received of the death on 1st May of Private Dugald McCready, Seaforth Hrs. Private McCready, was a son of Mr McCready, 41 Graham Street, Barrhead. He was 22 years of age and before enlisting was employed in the Tubal Foundry. A brother was killed at the front in June 1915.”
-
I also came across this when looking for the war dead records - do not know if any relation and the fiche was quite smudged so apologies for any inconsistencies.
Barrhead News 29 May 1914
“Marriage – at 9 Dublin Street West, Toronto, Canada on the 8th May by the Rev. Alex Macgillvray,D.D. John Jones McCreadie, late of Gateside, Barrhead to Helen K Vance, late of Barrhead.”
Barrhead News 20 April 1915
“Birth – at 362 Lanedowne (or Lansdowne) Avenue, Toronto, Canada on the 6th April, the wife of John Jones McCready, a daughter.”
BHN – Edition of 16th August 1918
In Memoriam
“In loving memory of our dear mother Janet Johnston, beloved wife of William McCready, who died suddenly at 27 Barnes Street on 6th August 1913.
We do not forget her, we loved her too dearly
For her memory to fade from our lives like a dream;
Our lips need not speak when our hearts mourn sincerely,
And our thought often rest where they seldom are seen.
- Inserted by her husband and family.”

That's a lot of hard research there Murphy - great info :)
Monica
-
Wow thanks very much Murphy, that's brilliant. I did a bit of research and there were two Daniels born within two years of each other, and the one who was killed there seems to be the other one which is actually a bit of a relief, I can only imagine how bad it must have been for a mother and father to lose Two sons at war never mind Three.
Thanks again, it was truly a great help.

I don't know if there is a site to find mining accidents in England - I didn't find a name for the brother killed in February 1915, but I will keep a look out in the Barrhead News just in case I missed it, I am not the best with fiche.
Perhaps someone will know how to find the other brother?
-
Not sure if this might be connected. There is a son Robert showing in 1891:
Peter McCready 44
Mary McCready 37
Robert McCready 15
James McCready 13
Alexr McCready 9
Ellen McCready 8
John McCready 6
Agnes McCready 3
Daniel McCready 9 Months
Address: Village of Gateside, Neilston
Can't easily see a comparable site to Scottish Mining site for England. There is this possibility perhaps for Feb. 1915 as mentioned by Murphy:
www.dmm.org.uk/names/d1910-19.htm - 25 Feb 1915 STS New Hem Heath - includes a Robert McCreadie.
All guesses without further verification.
Monica
-
Yeah, One of my relatives told me about that, it is the correct Robert. Of what I know, Him and my Gr Grandfather went down to Staffordshire for mining work, where they married Sisters, Ester and Frances Griffiths.
-
That would fit with this marriage entry:
Marriages 2nd Qrt 1899
Esther Ann Griffiths/ Robert McCready - Wolstanton 6b/ 170
One other bride/groom on the page, but names fit with what you know.
Monica
-
The other McCreadie entry for deaths alongside Robert was for a Levi McCreadie. I wonder if this is him in 1901 in Wolstanton, Staffs - all the children born in Staffordshire:
John McCready 40 b. Scotland
Esther McCready 47 b. Scotland
James McCready 21
John McCready 18
Levi McCready 16
Agnes McCready 12
Albert McCready 10
Ethel McCready 8
From deaths, there is this death showing:
Robert G McCready, 1st Qrt 1915 - age 39, in Stoke on Trent, 6b/302
Monica
-
I took a look through my tree and the only John McCready I have for that time period is in the 1901 census as living in Barrhead. Seems to be a load of McCready's running around Staffordshire at the time.
-
Likely to be some form of family connection you would think given the family were living in Wolstanton, where your Robert married in 1899. Sad that both Levi and Robert died in the same accident :-\
Monica
-
I do not think there is any connection but from 1933 Barrhead News, the following death notices:-
"McCready - at 31 Barnes Street, on the 1st November 1933, James McCready (Wee Jim), aged five years four months, beloved youngest son of James and Catherine McCready (sadly missed)."
"McCready - At Royal Sick Children's Hospital on 9th June 1933, William R McCready, twin son of Mr and Mrs McCready, aged five months."
There was an acknowledgement for the above death (re the twin) and the address was given as Graham's Terrace, Gateside.
"McCready - At Fereneze View, Gateside, Barrhead on 18th September 1933, Alexander Peacock McCready, beloved husband of Williamina Mushet, deeply regretted."
Acknowledgement for the above death notice placed by Mrs Williamina McCready and Mr Andrew McCready of Gateside.

Hello Everyone!
This is my first time posting on this site or on this subject so please let me know if I'm going about it the wrong way. I realise this is an old thread and I may not get a reply but fingers crossed!
I recently became interested in my family history when I found a letter belonging to my Grandfather McCready from an unknown relative, giving a breif outline of our family tree.
I decided to do a little 'googleing' to research this and stumbled across this thread, which I believe discusses two other branches of the same McCreadys, decended from James and Stewart McCready of Barrhead.
Before this post I spent a couple of days cross referencing between my info and the info on here, although I havent seen documented evidence as Im new to this and finding it difficult!
I am hoping the best thing to do is put down what I know and what I think I've found, and let other more experienced people have a look :)
Here goes! ( I warn you there are lots of repetitons with names)
James McCready born aprox 1801 m Stewart McCready sires James, b1821? Catherine, Jean and John, b1829?
These a quoted in this thread showing in the 1841 cencus without James snr who I assume dead at this point.
My g,g,g, grandfather is John, (The calico tearer aged 12 in 1841 cencus) John has a unknown wife, and a son James b1850.
Presumabley widowed John then marries Jane Brown Lee Hawthorne in Beith, Scotland in 1860.
They have a son John, b1859, Levi, b1862 William, b1863 and Thomas b1865-d1870.
They then upsticks and leave Scotland along with a few other family members I shall mention later.
I would like to know the reason for this, there is a suggestion they may have 'fled the country'??
They end up in Chesterton Stoke area in around 1866, where the have nine more children,
Janet, b1867, Robert, b1868, Samuel b1869, Kate b1871, my g,g, grandfather Thomas b1873 (second Thomas as the one b1865 died) and his twin sister Agnes, Harriet b1876, Daniel b1877 and James b1879. (The first James from the previous marriege dies in Chesterton the same year)
John Snr b1829 dies and is buried in Chesterton in 1880. His wife Jane is included on the 1901 census, no death record found for her as yet.
Now it gets more complicated! The son James(1821-1879) from the first marriage dies leaving a widow, Esther Hammond who is then married? to his half brother John (b1859)
They have 7 children, James, John Thomas, Levi, Janet, Agnes, Albert and Ethel.
Off these I know Levi m Clara Pennel, I mention this because his Uncle Levi, b1862 also marries a Clara! Her being Clara Dean with which he has 7 children,
Gladys, Janet, William Thomas, Levi, George, Jack and Clara.
The above mentioned Levi b1888? being the one who died in the mining accident at New Hem Heath in 1915 alongside Robert McCready b1876 who was related to him through his grandfather Johns brother James.
In turn Robert was the elder brother of Peter and Dugald McCready who died in the first world war.
This leads on to what I call the Barrhead half of the family, ie James who married Agnes McCauly,
But I think I best save that for another post!
Please give your opinions on this so far, I'd love some input, I have a lot of unanswered questions!
Thnx!
