Title: Jane Keith - Help Please
Post by: Sheepherder on Saturday 03 July 10 10:22 BST (UK)
I have hit a brick wall looking for information on a Jane Keith's family.  Jane  was born in Glasgow in 1836 and emigrated to Australia.  She married Andrew Brown in Brisbane on 28 Oct 1863 and died in Brisbane in 1914.

I have some info that suggests that her father was a Peter Keith and her mother was Ann Newbigging but this is sketchy at best.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Hi Sheepherder

Have you tried to verify her parents' names through either her marriage or death certs?

The only Jane/Jean Keith born c. 1836 showing in the Lanarkshire area on IGI is the one you have:

JANE CUNNINGHAM KEITH Christening: 02 NOV 1836 Lanark, Lanark
Parents: PETER KEITH and ANN NEWBIGGING

There must be some connection to the Cunningham name as I think this is mother and daughter in the 1841 census:

John Cuningham 67, Teacher Of Dancing
Jane Cunningham   45
Ann Newbrgging 20
Jean Keith 5

Address: North Vennel, Lanark

Possible for 1851, all born in Lanark. Children show as grandchildren to Jane Newbigging:

Jane Newbigging 65
Ann Keith 34
Jane Keith 15
John Keith 10
Janet Keith   6
Agnes Mitchel 17, lodger

Address: North Vennel, Lanark

Maybe a late christening for Ann, mother of Jane Keith?:

ANN NEWBIGGING Christening: 05 SEP 1821 Lanark, Lanark
Parents: ARCHIBALD NEWBIGGING and JEAN WALKER

Hi MonicaLesl,

Thank you very much for the info.  I will look into it now.  Jane Keith's death certificate does not show either of her parent's names unfortunately.  I have not yet obtained her marriage certificate but I will in the near future.

Thanks again for your help.  I do appreciate it.   8)

Sometimes it can end up being an elimination game  ;)

I am wondering whether this marriage may relate to the Jane Keith born in Lanark:

Hugh Gray and Jane Keith m. 04 NOV 1859 in Lanark, Lanark

Children showing to them on IGI:

1. ALEXANDER KEITH GRAY Birth: 25 MAR 1860 Lanark, Lanark
2. ELIZABETH GRAY Birth: 14 FEB 1862 New Monkland, Lanark
3. DAVID GRAY Birth: 09 MAY 1864 New Monkland, Lanark
4. HUGH GRAY Birth: 14 JUL 1866 New Monkland, Lanark
5. JANE GRAY Birth: 01 APR 1870 New Monkland, Lanark

I can see the family in the 1861/71 census, Jane's age varies from an 1838-40 birth year. She shows as born in Lanark.

Just a note, if you are certain of the Lanarkshire birth for Jane, there are 6 entries coming up in the 1851 census for a Jane Keith born in Lanarkshire between 1833-39, including the Jane we have above.

Hi Monical,

I dont think that this Jane Keith is the one I am after as Jane was married in Brisbane to Andrew Brown in 1863 and died there in 1914, but thanks anyway.   8)

As you say, the marriage and children details I posted can't be for your Jane Keith. I was only suggesting you might want to check the marriage entry in 1859 and from this get this Jane's parents' details to be able to eliminate her from your searches and list of possible Janes  :)
