I am trying to find out infomation and if there are any record books about this ophanage which was just out of the village of Ponteland on the road to Kirkley in the 1930's It was set up by the Poor Law Guardians of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1903
My father attended from a very early age until he was old enough to leave which was around about 16 I think. I would like to find out if there were any records of his time spent there, about life in general.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
There is an article and some photos of Ponteland Cottage Homes on this website
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Liverpool/Liverpool.shtml
Select Children and Education from the menu and then Cottage Homes
Scroll down until you see By 1914, the number of cottage or "small" homes (developments comprising just one or two homes), had jumped to 115:
Select Newcastle on Tyne from the list below that heading
About half way down the next page you'll find the info

Hi,
thanks for the prompt reply, I've been going around and around the internet looking for this, without much success. I've been doing a little on my family history and now find I have a lot of names but no information regarding times, events what it was like etc. I've had a quick read of the link you sent me and I'm sure it provide me with lots of information to move forward at last.
Again thanks, I'm sure after this rapid reply I'll be posting more
Cheers

Hi,
The former Cottage Homes at Ponteland are now the headquarters of Northumbria Police, and I think that before that they were Ponteland College of Education where teachers were trained.

Hi
I have just been reading this thread about Cottage Homes in Ponteland. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with info on the homes as I can't seem to find anything. My mother and her sister were there abt 1940 - 1955. There doesn't seem to be much out there about it at all.
Thanks
-
hi there
there are some documents at the tyne and wear archives i had a letter confirming that some personal details are held but here comes the downer.
1 you have to be a living relative for me ok
2 prove the person is deceaed
3 then you have to pay an hourly search fee of around 25 poounds an hour as it is all protected under the data protection act as persons may still be alive who went there ????????????
this now makes sense as they did not closee until 1959 !
hope this is some help
cheers

There was an article written in the 1999 edition of 'Pont Island News' published by Ponteland local History Society - see http://www.ponthistsoc.freeuk.com/pinindex.pdf
The full item can be sent in a pdf form after a small donation to the society-however the paper does not contain details of people.
Whilst the Ponteland Local history Society does not undertake family history research we are always looking to expand our knowledge of our history and would be interesed in hearing about families connected with 'THE COTTAGE HOMES' as it was called - you might also just have something about your family.

Thanks Maddfridge for your help.
I was trying to find out who had made the decision to put them into the Cottage Homes. It sounds complicated and expensive though.
Thanks to you also jmichaeltaylor for your help
Much appreciated

Norma - my father worked at Northumberland College of Higher Education that was formerly the cottage homes and did some research into it. I think his notes and research are housed with the Northumberland Archives. I will ask him and get back on line once i have found out

I am tring to do her family tree and this information would b invaluable. have contacted thenational archives which have files on thos who attended pnteland cottage homes primary school and am awaiting reply. did ayone else get any results. my grandmothers name is Elizabeth paris what are the names of your relatives that lived there? I shall ask her if she remembers them.

Hello all - sorry for the delay. I have spoken to my father and he says all of his research and recordings of 11 of the old residents (still alive in the 1980s when he did the research) are housed in the Tyne and Wear Archives. He says that the recordings were going to be transcribed but is not sure whether this has been done or not.
Hope that is of help

My great uncle, Francis Harris & wife Sarah were Superintendent and Matron there in 1911. They had been in Brentwood or Braintree in 1901. He was born in Worcester in 1864 and died back in Worcester.
They may have been at the school at the same time as your relatives.
Did the school produce pupil reports and would they have been signed?
Any information would be appreciated.
This is possibly of particular interst to maddfridge and alieninthelakes.

My great uncle Francis Harris and his wife Sarah were Superintendent and Matron there in 1911.
They'd been at Brentwood or Braintree in 1901.
Born in 1964 in Worcester he had returned to that city where he dies but I don't yet have the date.
Perhaps there are school reports with the Supt's signature thereon.
Any info would be appreciated.

My mother aged 8years, her sister 6years, and two brothers aged 4 and 2 years, were put into the cottage homes in 1923 when their mother died in child birth, my mother didn't talk much about it, other than they had to walk 2 miles to church twice on a Sunday, the girls had to work in the houses usually the kitchen and the boys the garden. At the age of 14 years the girls were sent into service and the boys to the shoe factories in Northampton. The children were fed quite well and were clean, but life was rather hard. If anyone has any further information as life there I would love to hear it.

My mam has spoken of being here from age 7 with her younger brother when their mam could not look after them prob around 1940. Unfortunately her memories were of poor treatment, hard daily work doing laundry and looking after the younger children, children in fear of some visitors (she wouldn't expand), children going missing at night (though they may have took the opportunity to run away when crossing a field at night to go to the toilet shed, something she said you didn't do unless you were desperate).

Hi all. This is my first post on this site. I am hoping I can get answers
My great grandad and his 3-4 siblings in this home I believe sometime after 1918 which is when his last sibling was born.
Their mam was put in a mental institution after receiving horrendous beatings from her husband. The kids never seen their mother again and their father placed them all in care.
I am not sure if the oldest child was put in this home with the rest of them but I know when he was old enough he got all of his siblings out if this home and raised them with his wife.
Their family name was young
I would love to find out ant records of them also any photos so I can pass this on to my grandad
I have read all of your responses and hope yous have found answers yous are seeking
