Hi all
Just today I have discovered that my hubby's gt grandmother was born in Yorkshire ( thats all her death certificate said) in about 1857.
Her parents being James Howarth & Elizabeth Howarth - no m/s recorded, and unfortunately no occupation for James.
Appears that she must have left England with her family at the age of abt 10 yrs old, as she was in New Zealand for 70 years at the time of her death on 28 March 1939 in Lumsden.
Anyone able to help out, would love to hear from you.

Howarth is much more a Lancashire surname than Yorkshire but unfortunately there are no matches for Yorkshire on the 1861 census
Do you know the names of any of her siblings as it may help narrow it down?
Do you know her full date of birth?

Hi Carole
Just started looking into her, the only info I have is her death in New Zealand, and what I have already written.
Appears she must have come to NZ when she was about 10 years old, if the figures on her death cert are correct, she was married July 1874 in New Zealand. I havent got this certificate at this stage, as I believe all marriage certs here before 1881 wont give me any more information than I already have.

The 1861 has 2 possible entries with parents James and Elizabeth - both born Lancashire - one b 1856 and one 1857 but birthyears can be dependant on exactly when a child was born
(eg) a child born in June 1856 would be 4yrs old when the census was taken in 1861 so would be shown with a birthyear of 1857 (1861-4)
Anything from passenger lists?

Hi Carole
Always thought Alice was going to be a tricky person to track down, most of my side are from Scotland, she is the 1st from England !!
Havent get much experience at track down passenger lists, not sure where to look.

Hi
A little more information about my "mystery lady, Alice".
Got the birth certificate of their son, my hubby's grandfather, Charles was born 10 October 1881 in Lumsden, Alice was then 23, her maiden name was Howarth, and she was born in East Riding, Yorkshire, England.
That means she was born abt 1856-1857, anyone able to see if they can find her for me.
Thanks
Maureen in New Zealand.
Andrew & Alice's marriage cert of 6 July 1874 in Queenstown New Zealand, shows his occupation as a Miner ( during the Gold Rush in the area), Alice was 18 yrs old and a spinster. At this stage unable to read the witness signatures.

The 1861 only has one b Yorkshire but living in Clitheroe Lancs - all b Waddington Yorks - but she was Mary Alice b 1858/9 and appears to be illegitimate
Elizabeth Howarth 39 unmarried - washerwoman
Charles 8
Mary Alice aged 2
RG9 Piece 3087 Folio 159 Page 27
The only other 1861 entry for an Alice Howarth b Yorks had parents William & Alice -not James & Elizabeth
