Looking for John Gee gives his place of birth on 1881,1891 and 1901 census as Nottingham. On the 1871 his place of birth is given as Loughbro Leicester. He married Sarah Lowe in 1868 in Loughbro. His place of residence on marriage cert. is Queen St.Loughbro. As yet have not been able to find a birth for him his father's name is William Gee on his marriage cert. He was 25yrs. when he married but on the census his year of birth differs to his age as stated on marriage cert. Also unable to locate him on the 1861 census.I have been helped on Rootschat with the 1871 census for him. Would like to find his birth and parents if possible,as I have been able to follow him through until the 1901 census. Most greatful for any help given.

Greetings Smithy
I have the name Gee in my family so your posting caught my eye.
I found reference to a John Gee aged 18 in the 1861 census born in Notts serving as a private in the army and registered at Winchester St Thomas (so I assume Peninsula Barracks).
I also found a family of Gees living in L'boro in the same census. No more than a possible coincidence but here are the main details
RG9/2273 ED 6 Folio 92 page 14
Sch 75 Queen St
Mary Gee head wid 67 seamstress L'boro
William son 30 Cotton FWK (I think) do.
William g/son 15 do. Leicester
My own connection may also be nothing to do with your Gees as Gee is a fairly common name.
My maternal great grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Gee b.1846 to George William Gee and Elizabeth in Somerby (nr. Melton).
Probably none of this helps but at least you've now got an answer of sorts!
regards
Tony

Hi Tony, Thanks for the posting re. John Gee hadn't thought that he may have been in the army! (If that is him) His age fits with age given on marriage cert. Now could I please ask where is Peninsula Barracks being from Australia would not have a clue!!! Perhaps then I may be able to follow through with that. I have not as yet checked if I have Elizabeth Ann Gee with any info. I have, but will let you know if I do.
Thanks again

Hi Smithy
Soldier John Gee was shown at "Winchester St Thomas" which is a parish name. With census returns it is sometimes difficult to see the name of the institution but for reasons I won't bore you with I know about the former barracks at Winchester which was next to St. Thomas' church and was called Peninsula Barracks (presumably named after the Peninsula wars).
I don't know whether you know about Winchester which was the seat of monarchs and government centuries ago. It has an original Roman castle later enlarged by the Normans (now mainly ruins). The surviving Great Hall of the old castle, a magnificent building, contains "King Arthur's Round Table" hanging on the wall (recently proven to be a 16th century fake). The barracks was alongside these buildings and many of the Victiorian Buildings and the barracks square are still there. If it was your ancestor he lived in a very important English historical area for some of his life!
I see that you live in Victoria. I have a daughter-in-law from Melbourne - a delightful city and a fantastic coastline!

Hi Tony thanks for the other info. re. Soldier John Gee. I guess my next step would be to try and find how to go about researching army records.(Which I haven't a clue how to do that)
I do have an Elizabeth Gee her parents are William Gee & Ann ?
born 1852. according to age on 1861 census. In 1861 they are living at 7 Carlton Rd. Nottingham.
Yes Melbourne is a great city, I live about 2 hours east of Melbourne not only is the coastline great but so are the mountains and farming areas.
Thanks again for your interest about John Gee. I think his early years may remain a mystery for a while.

Hi Smithy,
Can I ask you to give me John's age and given birthplace in each of the later censuses?
If it's helpful I will then go through the Gee entries on the Notts 1851, to see if I can find him with his family.

Got 'em :) Although father William is a framework knitter in 1851, they are clearly the same family that someone gave you from 1861 (when he WAS a butcher). The image is fairly hard to read, so if you would like to see for yourself, send me an email address in a pm?

PS I am looking at the image again, and I really can't decide whether it says Leicester or Snenton for the 3 older children!

Thanks for your help Heather. Now to find John on the 1861 census!

I think that the Elizabeth Gee you have is from a different family. My Elizabeth was born in 1846 in Somerby and the birth was registered in Melton Mowbray. Her father William was a gardener not a butcher.
Still there may be a family link somewhere so if you encounter it I'd be delighted to know.
In the meantime good luck with your genealogy

Tony, we share a common ancestor. I am decended from Thomas Sneath Gee, brother to Elizabeth Ann Gee. Thomas was born in Somerby 1843. Their father was William or George Gee married to Elizabeth Sneath. Do you want to share information ?

Hello dnjgraham and thanks for the contact. I would certainly be interested to extend my knowledge of the Gee family as I've not really spent any time on them. Have you?
It may not be best use of this forum to spend too much time in this thread dealing with much detail and maybe we should use PMs? However, here are a few details which you may or may not know about Elizabeth Ann. As you know she was born in Somerby in 1846 and as you say, she had various brothers and sisters but Thomas was her immediately older brother.
By the 1851 census the family had moved to Leicester and then in 1871 Elizabeth had a daughter Minnie in Bradford, Yorks. The following year she married my great grandfather Joseph King who eventually became an express train driver. I do not know whether Joseph was Minnie's father, nor do I know what relationship, if any, the family in Yorkshire she stayed with when pregnant had to her own family.
When she married Joseph she gave the wrong age for herself (or at least it was recorded incorrectly). However, as you probably know, that was a fairly common occurrence.
She and Joseph had 4 daughters and a son and the last daughter was my grandmother on my mother's side.
I have Elizabeth and Thomas' father as George William Gee (1801-1885) born in Cold Overton. I had the mother as Elizabeth but didn't know until now what her surname was.
I don't know what generation you are but if you are the same as me that would make us 2nd cousins. Greetings cousin. I look forward to hearing from you.

Also related must also be cousins?
