Title: Relief Church
Post by: bullywee on Thursday 01 July 10 17:48 BST (UK)
I have a relative who I believe was a member of Balfron Relief church around 1807. He later moved to the Thornliebank area of Renfrewshire around 1820.
My queries are:
Are there any such documents giving membership lists for Balfron relief church? Are their archives available to view? If so, where?

Where would a relief church member attend church if he was living in Thornliebank in 1820?

Thank you,
Bullywee

Church records held:  http://www.stirling.gov.uk/index/access-info/archives/catalogue/cat-church-records.htm  I don't know if they'd include a list of parishoners.

Most of the surviving records are held at the NAS in Edinburgh ....

In 1820 the Relief church would probably have had their own building either in Thornliebank or possibly sharing with nearby Pollokshaws. It wasn't until 1847 that the Relief joined with the Secession Church to become the United Presbyterian Church (in 1900 the UP joined with the Free Church and in 1929 rejoined the Church of Scotland).
