Hi Scoon
Welcome to RootsChat :)
What do you have on your wife's grandfather to date?
Can't see the marriage on IGI but they look to have had a number of children together - from IGI:
1. ROBERT STEVENSON Birth: 10 DEC 1866
2. SARAH STEVENSON Birth: 14 JUN 1869
3. ALEXANDER STEVENSON Birth: 18 MAR 1871
4. ROBERT STEVENSON Birth: 08 MAR 1873
5. PETER STEVENSON Birth: 1878 - submitted entry
6. DAVID STEVENSON Birth: 1880 - submitted entry
Have you checked Robert's birth cert on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see what it says about his parents and their marital status?

Possible marriage showing on Scotlands People for parents in 1869 in Bathgate.
Can't see young Robert on the likely entry for the family 1871....although I have just realised that there were two sons Robert born to Robert Stevenson and Alison Bell from that list from IGI. Likely first Robert died and your Robert was the one born in 1873 (common to re-use important family names again if first child died).
This looks to be the family in 1871:
Robert Stevenson 36, engine man b. Inveresk, Musslelburgh
Alison Stevenson 32 b. Dalman, Midlothian
Sarah Stevenson 1 b. Bathgate
Allen Stevenson 16 days b. Bathgate
Address: Edinr Glasgow Winpike Road Woodhead Cottages, Bathgate
Robert, son, shows with the family in 1881:
Robert Stevenson 44 Engine Keeper b. Musselburgh, Edinburghshire
Alison Stevenson 41 b. Dalmeny, Linlithgowshire
Sarah Stevenson 11
Alexander Stevenson 10
Robert Stevenson 8
Peter Stevenson 3
David Stevenson 10 Months
Address: Woodhead, Bathgate

Can't easily see the 1927 death that you are referring to scoon :-\
This is the only in the area, from freebmd:
Robert Stevenson, 66 - 4th Qrt 1927 in Tynemouth, Vol 10b, pag 244
That age at death would make his birth year c. 1861.
There is this IGI entry for an 1861 birth perhaps:
ROBERT STEVENSON Birth: 11 AUG 1861 Bathgate, West Lothian
Parents: ROBERT STEVENSON and MARGARET GOLD

Hi Monica
the date of death may have been 1926 as the family say he was 60 when he died.I checked the birth on Scotlands people and says born 10 DEC 1866 to
Robert Stevenson and Allison Bell.
There is no record of the child's death .
We think Robert was brought up by someone who may have been a member of the Brethren church his bible was stamped with Broxburn on the inner cover
he was married to Jessie Stubbs 1901 Durham Sunderland.
1911 census shows him as manager of a pawn brokers shop in Durham and states he was born 1866 in Bathgate Linlithgoshire
he had 5 children jessie, Robert, Margaret, Gladys, Dorris.

Hi Ken
I can't see a likely death on freebmd www.freebmd.org.uk with a Robert aged c. 60 in those years :-\
The son of Robert Stevenson and Alison Bell, b. 1873, I think is still lin Scotland for the 1901 census, likely with his big sister Sarah:
Robert Forrest 32
Sarah Forrest 31
Thomas Forrest 9
Robert Steverson 28 Fireman Railway
Peter Steverson 23
David Steverson 20
Address: Meadow Head Ptr House, Bathgate
There is a death showing for a Robert Stevenson in West Lothian (not in Bathgate) in 1867 for a Robert likely aged months (if you put in a birth year of 1867 it shows, remember that this Robert was born at the end of 1866).
Have you got a copy of Robert's 1901 marriage cert? If so, what did it say about his father? What was his occupation in 1901? There is a possible entry for a Robert Stevenson in Sunderland in 1901 (aged 32 b. Scotland and a shipyard labourer).

Hi Monica
I heard from Ian Stevenson who lives in Canada the Robert born
1873 Was in the army in India where he died from some disease.
Robert Stevenson B 1861 to Robert Stevenson and Margaret Gold in Bathgate may be the answer.
as My father in law was Robert Gold and sister was Margaret Gold.
even my daughter is Marion gold
I will try and get the marriage certificate.
the English certificate only give fathers details not mothers details.
thanks for you're help

Hi Ken
I do think that Robert, son of Robert and Margaret (Gold) is likely your man. Especially with what you say as to the use of the middle name Gold for the children of Robert and Jessie. Always helpful with the Scots that they like to use paternal/maternal grandparents names and also use in particular mother's maiden name as a middle name!
The main reason I asked about the 1911 marriage entry was to double check on father's occupation which could then help the census entries etc.
These are the children showing to Robert Stevenson and Margaret Gold on IGI - all born in Bathgate:
1. JAMES STEVENSON Birth: 25 JAN 1858
2. ROBERT STEVENSON Birth: 11 AUG 1861
3. MARGARET STEVENSON Birth: 06 MAY 1863
4. AGNES PALMER STEVENSON Birth: 12 MAY 1866
5. AGNES STEVENSON Birth: 24 SEP 1868
1861:
Robt Stevenson 43, labourer b. Ireland
Margt Stevenson 31 b. Airdrie, Lanarkshire
James Stevenson 3 b. Bathgate, Linlithgowshire
William Swensen 8, nephew b. Bothwell, Lanarkshire
Agnes Rankin 2, niece b. Bathgate, Linlithgowshire
Address: 29 Livery Street, Bathgate
1871:
Robert Stevenson 56, labourer b. Ireland
Margaret Stevenson 40 b. England (?)
Robert Stevenson 10 b. Bathgate
Agnes Stevenson 2 b. Bathgate
Address: Kamehead, Bathgate
1881 - I think Robert is working as a groom, aged 18, in Dalmeny West Lothian
1891:
Robert Stevenson 74, Retired Labourer b. Ireland
Robert Stevenson 29, Oil Works Labourer b. Bathgate
John Cray 17 boarder
Alexander Smith 50 boarder
Janet Gold Swan 56, sister in law b. Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
Address: 22 Greendykes Rd, Uphall West Lothian
Can't see him in 1901, which is why I thought that entry down in Sunderland for that year might be him.

Hi Monica
I have now received the marriage certificate of Robert and Jessie24/10/1901
Robert aged 34 years Shipyard labourer father Robert Stevenson deceased
Labourer, that would make his date of birth as 1866 as his birthday was December.
the 1911 census for Sunderland states his age as 66 years born Bathgate Linlithgowshire.
they moved to Brussels Road Wallsend Tyne and Weir where he died.
it is noted he was 60 years when he died
still a big mystery.

Hi Monica
It could be possible he used the deceased Robert's date of birth to make himself
5 years younger to get employment as he was a stranger to Sunderland no one would be any the wiser.

Hi Ken
With everything that you have now (including the occupation for father Robert as labourer from that marriage cert in 1911) I think you are firming up that family of Robert and Margaret (Gold) for your Robert.
The problem with relying on census ages is that they can vary enormously. For example, if we do have the right entry for Robert in Sunderland a few months before his marriage in 1901, he showed as b. 1869, aged 32. His marriage a few months later, aged 34. Yet everything is currently pointing at that 1861 birth in Bathgate. Varying ages is very much a sign of these times.
Also, cannot see a death in Northumberland for a 60 yrs old Robert Stevenson/Stephenson to match an 1866 birth, just the one I posted first in 1927 for a 66 yrs old Robert. Have you checked on Freebmd, you will see what I mean.
You say it was noted he was 60 yrs old when he died, where was this?

It was noted in his daughter Margaret's birthday note book
that his birthday was December and he was 60 when he died.
I agree with you it seems it was 1961 born to Robert and Margaret Gold.
the family may have been deceived all these years.
I have one last thing to try there is an old lady called Margaret Stevenson
who lives near my friend and she was born in Uphall
she may remember some connection.
many thanks for you're help
Ken
