Honorary custodian of East Takaka cemetery has passed on the following information
Christopher has no headstone but is buried with his son Archibald who was drowned in the same accident. Christopher age was 67 and Archibald 17. She has newspaper report of the accident on 5th May 1896 - detailing how their boat overturned off Pohara Beach and was observed from the shore but rescuers were unable to reach the two men before they drowned. Both worked for a Mr Abbott, farmer and storekeeper of Paynes Ford and were reported as 'good workers'.
This shows that at least two members of the family were living in Takaka in 1896.
Alongside their grave is another Thompson, Leighton aged 8 son of Alex Thompson, died 1899 so possibly a relation?
Hope this helps.

Here is some links to papers past articles that relate to the accident/family. The second refers to the Coroners inquest. The third provides details on his early arrival and services during the Maori wars, it also provides details on next of kin and additional relatives.

Good find nicoleh13
So Christopher was survived by wife, 3 daughters and 4 sons.
Should be a help for dscot and I know the custodian at East Takaka will be delighted to have this extra information.

The third article referenced that "Mrs Fell" was the youngest of Christophers 3 daughters.
It may be possible that Christopher Thompson's daughter "Amelia THOMPSON" married "Herbert Thomas FELL" IN 1892. BMD registration 1892/119.
If Amelia was born in NZ, then there are two possibilities. 1866/7422 or 1868/8144, neither have parents details recorded.

You might want to check the following articles as well as they seem to relate to this family. There are numberous other articles as well that provide further details if you search for Herbert Fell.

Untitled
Nelson Evening Mail, Volume XXX, Issue 127, 30 May 1896, Page 3
In regard to the late Mr Christopher Thompson aud his son, who were recently drowned at Takaka, the "N.Z. Herald" (Auckland) says:— "The two men were were father and brother of Mr Herbert Fell, of this city. Mr Thompson came to New Zealand in the early days as orderly to Major Willis, and saw a good deal of service in the Maori war. On his discharge from the service he settled in Wellington, taking to farming. Some time afterwards he sold the farm, and later on settled in Picton, where he brought up a large family, A few years ago he left Picton, and went to Takaka, where he lived until his untimely end. He was greatly respected, on account of his integrity and geniality. Deceased leaves a widow, three daughters, and four sons (Mrs Fell being the youngest daughter) to mourn their loss.

Hi -after sending you that message I relooked at what I had- I have a copy of christopher thompsons death certificate which states at the time of his death he had 4 sons and 3 daughters alive. Their ages were males- 38 36 31 25 and females 34 29 27. I had already looked up the papers pastetc and NZ BDMs and the names Archibald, allen ,William frederick, albert Edward thru me because Alec was born in around 1864 and the years seemed to far apart. BUT I have changed my mind since I received the certificate and can see the last 4 children had died. I can't find Allens death thou.
So It does seem that Christopher Thompson is the one that belongs in the family. By the way I am married to Lee thompson who is Ivan Thompsons son.
I am sure mike will explain. I am interested to share info maybe you could e-mail me direct and not thru Roots. Mike has it.
Thanks Jan
