I am after the birth details if possible of Gladys Mary Sugden, born 9 October 1889, ChristChurch I think?? Can anyone help out here Regards Lisa
-
Hi Lisa,
I cannot see a birth for Gladys in the years between 1860 and 1900.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/
Can you tell us her parents names?
Regards
Leandra

Hi Lisa B
Welcome to rootschat.
Gladys Mary Sudgen marriage comes up as 1915 to Arthur Lawrance Dermer, but a spelling mistake as "Gwladys".
Did she die in Christchurch? I will have a look for you.

Hi Gladys parents I think were Albert Sidney Sugden and Annie Harris. I think she was born in Christchurch because she was baptised at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church Christchurch North. Not sure were this family came from in England. Arthur Lawrence Dermer is her correct husband. Gladys died in Feilding New Zealand at about 42 years old. Thanks heaps Lisa
-
Do you have the birth's of Elsie Memua Maithal 1895 and Samuel Charles Vivian White 1898? (Parents Albert and Annie)
Still Gladys is not showing on the BMD.
Arthur Lawrence Dermer enlisted with the NZ Army 1914, as shown on Archway, but no probate for both Gladys and Arthur.
Also Papers past have a few Dermer http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast? A nice wedding notice for the eldest son of Arthur Dermer 1905 Feilding Star

Hi Lisa
Can't see this family travelling to NZ (or Australia) after 1891, but will have another look for them.
Obviously, Annie and Albert Sydney (Sidney) SUGDEN were in NZ by 1895 for the birth of their daughter Elsie.
[Incidentally, her marriage records her as "Elsie Menina Maithal SUDGEN. ]
* When (what date), did the baptism of Gladys, take place at Christchurch ?

Hi Lisa
Hmm .. can only find one record of a birth for "Gladys Mary SUGDEN" in UK between 1887 and 1891 ... and it's registered in a different county to where the parents were married ... (not that that means a lot) ... but, the birth reg'n. is before the marriage reg'n. for the parents. ???
[May be a reason why her baptism took place once she arrived in Christchurch ? ;)]

Hi Lisa
An easy way to find out, just where Gladys was born, would be to request a look-up on one of the England boards for this family - (Albert S., Annie and Gladys M.) - living in Richmond 1891.
Purchasing the marriage record for Gladys to Arthur DERMER, would also assist in confirming Gladys' birthplace and her parents names. [If ordering this, request the "printout" - which gives maximum information ... and is also the less expensive option . ;) ]

Hi,
Just happened to be going in to Christchurch Library today. Found a record of Gladys Mary's baptism in the card index.
SUGDEN, Gladys Mary, born 9 Oct 1889.
Baptised Holy Trinity Avonside, 4 Dec 1906.
Parents: Albert Sydney, Gentleman and Annie. Sponsor Annie SUGDEN
Holy Trinity is an Anglican Church.
Also with same parents:
Alberta May SUGDEN, born 28 Feb 1892, baptised 4 Dec 1906.
John Henry Francis SUGDEN, born 28 May 1906, baptised 27 Sept 1906
No record of Gladys' birth on the microfiche. Looks like she was born in England.
Stephanie :)

What I found must be the right family as there is an Arthur Harris Linsall SUGDEN birth in NZ in 1901 to Albert Sidney and Annie. The earlier ones found were to Albert Sydney and Annie

Yes she did convert to Catholicism.

Thank you so much to all who have helped out here on this topic.

They left England and travelled to South Africa where Alberta May was born in 1892 then came to New Zealand and settled to have their remaining family. Arthur Harris Linsell Sugden was Born in 1901 in Geraldene Christchurch he is my Grandfather.

Hi then we are very closely related. Arthur's sister Gladys is my Great Grandmother.
-
Hi Lisa,
Yes we did email about a year ago. I have had some spare time so have been busy doing further research. I saw Lynn Wilson in Hawkes Bay and we recussed the connection. Will be travelling to London next year and hopefully will contact some family members. Are you still in contact with Phil? I pressume he lives there.
Kind Regards Caroline
-
Hi no never heard from him again. Didn't seem to want to stay in contact. Are you talking about Lyndon? He died about 4 years ago as did my mum from Motor Neurons Disease.
-
Hi Lisa, Lynn was Lydons ex wife. My mum Mary née Sugden has been life long friends with Lynn and her family. Lyndon,Lynn, Rachel,Reuben and Brendon lived next to us in Havelock North growing up. Lyndon use to park his helicopter on our farm and we went for frequent joy rides! He was a great pilot. Mum went to His funeral of coarse. So sorry to hear of your mothers death. Who were your grandparents and parents? Would love to catch up if your ever in Auckland to compare notes if you would like at some stage.
Kind Regards Caroline
-
Lyndon and mum where great support to each other as they both had the same disease at the same time they were first cousins. My grandfather Edward (Mums father) and Lyndon's mother Margaret where brother and sister and there was Joan also. Pop (Edward) and Joan were twins. Gladys Sugden, Albert and Anne's oldest child was their mother. I don't recall ever meeting Lyndon's wife or any of his family.
-
Ok thanks for that. Heading down to Hawkes Bay soon so will ask mum some more questions!
Thanks Lisa :)
