I used to play darts with a very good darts player George Paling ( born about 1909 in Shirebrook , I think  ) in Mansfield and Woodhouse area. Wherever we went to play a match, even into other counties, people knew George and we would hear as we walked into the pub or club " IS THAT GEORGE PALING? "
George's son  Frank emigrated to Australia in the 70's and several years later George went to visit him. On their first visit to Frank's local pub in the suburbs of Perth as they walked into the bar, the cry went up " IS THAT GEORGE PALING ? "
Sorry, just had to tell that story.
Back to your request for information - could George be one of yours? if so , he has relatives still in the Mansfield area and Iwould be willing to try to find more info for you.

was wondering if any one else is looking for palings of mansfield notts.

I just thought I'd mention that I'm managing a Y-DNA surname project focusing on the Paling / Pailing / Payling / Palin folk of Nottinghamshire.  I'm always looking for more male volunteers to join up although they will have to self-fund at this point (perhaps as a gift from the genealogically minded in the family).

One of the goals is to determine if they all share a common biological lineage and to see to what extent the surname has mutated in spelling and pronunciation and spread across the globe.
