Title: Seeking info on Isabella McCune, Ballygowan
Post by: wacha on Monday 28 June 10 01:14 BST (UK)
Seeking information on cemetery listing for Isabella McCune, b. ? d.  14 Jan 1864, buried at Ballygowan church, probably Presbyterian.

I have a letter written by her brother "D. McCune" (probably David) in 1864 from Rovara, Ireland to his siblings in Michigan, USA:  Samuel McCune, born 3 May 1834 in County Down.  Possible other sibling in Michigan James McCune.

Other siblings in Ireland mentioned in the letter:  John, Mary.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. I cannot find any information on Isabella but a David McCune, farmer of RAVARA died on 24 May 1911. Probate was granted to Samuel McCune, farmer and Hugh Skelly, Boot Merchant. Hugh Skelly had married Mary Anne McCune on 10 Dec 1890 in Ballygowan Presbyterian Church. A McCune family certainly seem to have been connected to Ballygowan Presbyterian Church.

Regards

PS David and some of his family can be found on the 1901 and 1911 census. His wife was Babara McCormick. see www.census.nationalarchives.ie

So why did John come for her clothes? Was he her husband perhaps?

I think John might have been married to "Ann".  She's mentioned in the letter, and there's an Ann McCune on the 1901 / 1911 census.

I don't think he was her husband, or he should have been tending to her when she was sick.   But he sounds kinda like a jerk!  Maybe there's an arrest report on him!

Cant add any info to your enquiry but I found three wills for McCune's living at Ravara.

The Will of William M'Cune late of Ravarra in the County of Down Farmer deceased who died 18 April 1860 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oaths of Robert M'Cune of Ravarra aforesaid Farmer one of the Executors.

Probate of the Will of Robert M'Cune late of Rabara County Down Farmer and Carpenter who died 29 June 1900 granted at Belfast to William M'Cune Joiner.

Probate of the Will of David McCune late of Ravara County Down Farmer who died 24 May 1911 granted at Belfast to Samuel McCune Farmer and Hugh Skelly Boot Merchant

Full details of the wills can be viewed at PRONI, and /or you cant get them photocopied and sent to you for a modest fee.

Thank you all so much for your assistance!

Otto:  I will check the PRONI site and request photocopies.  My ancestor Samuel McCune named one of his sons William, so there may be a connection.

ShaunJ:  You are probably right.  Is there any additional information available from the death registration, that I can request, like a death certificate?

DixieDee:  I have responded via Personal Message, thank you!!

In case you're interested, I am attaching a photo of Samuel McCune and Eliza McKee, taken in front of their house in Michigan.

Also in the photo are their daughter Abbie Eliza (who married her cousin Francis Bennett b. 18 Mar 1865 in Saintfield, Ireland), son William Erwin, and son David Arthur (my great grandfather).

Hello wacha,
I too have McCune ancestors from Ballygowan, and Kilmood and Ravara too.
James M McCune born 19 July 1871 in Kilmood lived in Ballygowan. He married a Mary Boyd? 1899. James and Mary moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1907 with their 3 sons, Robert, James and Samuel.
I believe that James was the son of Robert McCune who died 29 June 1900. Robert McCune was married to Ann McCormick on 1 September 1866 in Saintfield, Down.
And I believe Robert McCune was the son of William McCune who died 18 April 1860.
I found a William McCune and James McCune to be on the Tithe Applotment List for Ravara, Killinchy, Down in 1833. And there is a Samuel McCune who is on the Freeholders List for 1776 in Ravara.

I am sure there is some sort of connection between our McCune's. If any of this sounds familiar feel free to share any information.

Hello Harvester:
I am wondering if the William McCune and James McCune (on the Tithe Appointment list for Ravara) were brothers.

From what I have been able to discern so far, it looks like my McCunes descended from James, and yours from William.  Would be great if we could determine if the Samuel McCune on the 1776 Freeholders list was their father.

Thank you for the information!

I recently downloaded a copy of the handwritten will of James McCune, who died 27 April 1863.  I believe he is the father of my ancestor, Samuel McCune.  In the will, he names the following children:John, James, Samuel and Samuel's son James (my ancestor), Mary, Elizabeth, and David.

All of these except Elizabeth tie in to the letter.  I am thinking that perhaps Elizabeth was called Bella by the family?  She was the youngest.

David McCune was my Great Grandfather and I have a record that he married Barbara McCormick on 30/6/1864 in Saintfield. Their son William was my Grandfather on my mothers side.

I spent many holidays on the family farm at "The Hawe" Ravara until it was sold by my uncle about 1965. The last family member to farm it was David's son Samuel who died unmarried in the 1950s.

I was sent some information given by Sharon Nisbett to a distant cousin. Unfortunately I lost some details when a computer failed about 12 years ago.

Wuz - I have a bunch of info on Ancestry.  If you send me your email, I will send you an invite to view what I have.  I have also corresponded with Sharon.

I visited Ireland a few years ago, went to the Ballygowan cemetery, and also met a McCune descendant still living in the area.  I believe her ancestor was the brother to your David McCune's father.  Do you still live in Ireland?

wacha,

I will send you a PM with my email address.
I haven't lived in Ireland since 1974, my brother returned on 1992 (the year my mother Elizabeth Boyd nee McCune died) and actually lived in a new build in Ballygowan for about 10 years. He now lives near Downpatrick.
My Grandfather William was the last brother and died on 31 January 1969. Samuel left the farm to William's only son Edwin. William was upset as he knew Edwin had no interest in the farm. Edwin had 3 children. I will be meeting up with their son (who lives in Kircubbin Co Down) for a break in Cornwall in May. Edwin rented the land out but eventually sold up and used the capital to buy a bungalow in about 1966.
The farm was called the Hawe but in the fifties a larger farm nearby owned by the Kerrs named their house the Hawe.
About 1985 the farm had electric and was being used to store hay and agricultural equipment. In 2002 it had been knocked down and a large house built on the plot. Couldn't get near to it due to gates and Private signs!
I looked at the graveyard in 2002 and remember my grandfather saying there was a great family row when a widow erected a gravestone. The family cut her off as they thought it was a waste of money which could have been better used for church or charitable purposes.
I remember Samuel used to call at my grandfathers in Madrid St Belfast on a Friday after he had been to the market in Belfast. He always carried a bible and even my religious grandmother found him hard going!
I only looked at the McCunes originally after I had had little success  tracing my father John Boyd's great grandparents.
This weekend Ancestery UK had a free weekend which was the reason I dug out my old records!
A distant relative, sent me a very poor photocopy of Sharons paper notes. He lives in Ireland but they were forwarded by his eldest brother who like me is in England. The Gibsons were originally from The Lessons Irelands Corner near Saintfield. Other relatives I used to remember visiting as a child were the Orr and the Burgess families. They had a sawmill near Shepherds Bridge.
I will have to speak to him as he knows how everyone is related! I think it was through his mother Isa. I intend to speak to my cousin in May and she if he knows any more than I do.

Regards,

Wuz
