My mother's maternal grandmother was Florence Liebman Leopold (daughter of Sigmund and niece of Lewis). Florence married George Spawton Catlow, my great-grandfather, who was an artist (mostly watercolour landscapes). They lived in Leicester.

Had a look at FreeBMD today.
The only marriage I can find for George Spawton Catlow was in 1883 at Hinkley in Leicestershire - bride was Florence Emma GILBERT.
Followed George S Catlow (many spellings) down through the Census - in 1891 there is not sign of G's wife and in 1901 George is brother in law to Thomas ALlen and family.
I am a little confused now.
Florence Leibman Leopold was definitely daughter of Sigmund and Emma/Ellen Leopold - noted in 1871 1881 and 1891 Census where she is aged 22 years.
Perhaps she was George's second wife?

Vicki

Yes, she was his second wife. I am pretty certain they were still together in 1901. They had a cottage at Kibworth near Leicester. It may be that Florence was there and that George was at his brother-in-law's (his sister's husband's place) at the time the census was filled in. The sad part is that Florence was sectioned in 1907 and spent the rest of her life in an asylum. This was a bit of family histyory that, needless to say, none of her immediate relatives were keen to talk about. I found out from my mother about twenty years ago, but the details are rather shrouded in mystery.

I don't know when Florence died, but will investigate further and let you know what I find. What relation is Shirley to Lewis, Sigmund and Babette?

Best wishes.

Lewis is Shirley's Gt Gt Grandfather - he married Marian Harriet Harvey 2Sep1846 St Hellier.
Their daughter Matilda b 1851 married Henry Moss 1875 in London.
Their son Isaac aka John and Jack was born Glasgow? 1876 and married Annie Bedford in Perth Western Australia in 1913.
Their son John George Moss was Shirley's father.
We only started looking at her ancestors in the last month - having a grand time with the research

Hear from you again
What is your name??

My name is Joe Staines. Sigmund is my great-great-grandfather. He was married to Ellen West. Their daughter Florence was the 2nd wife of George Spawton Catlow and the mother of three girls, including my grandmother Elise Catlow. Elise's first husband was Harry Letts and they had 3 children including my mother Pauline Letts. I am her youngest son by her husband Geoffrey Staines. My brother Andrew thinks he might have more material about the Leopolds, I will let you know if anything turns up.

Best wishes.

Nice to meet you Joe Staines. Have found death of Florence in 1944 aged 76 at Blaby in Leicester. Also in the 1901 and 1911 Census.
Do you know details of Florence's marriage to George Spawton Catlow?

Appreciate any Leopold info you may have.
Where do you and your brother live?

Vicki and Shirley

Had lunch with Shirley yesterday. She says 'thank you' for the Florence info.

I finally spoke to my brother Andrew about the Leibman Leopold connection, and he supplied me with quite a lot more information. Unbeknown to me, he and my mother linked up around 1990 with a Canadian cousin of hers, John Knox (they had holidayed together as children on St Helier in the 1920s), who is another Sigmund Leopold descendant, through Sigmund and Ellen's 3rd child Theresa (Florence's sister). John Knox's wife had done rather a lot of research – almost too much to supply via RootsChat. It might be easier to post you (or Shirley) the information. Incidentally, I know of descendants in New Zealand. Florence had 3 daughters, my grandmother Elise and her sisters Norah and Avice. Avice married Geoff Parkes and their son Michael emigrated to NZ where he was (I think) a dairy farmer. Michael married Dorothy and had four children – Anne, Helen, Geoffrey and Fiona.

Best wishes…
